- Mercedes McCambridge is the unsung hero of The Exorcist, portraying the voice of Pazuzu. Her performance is absolutely stunning. Have you heard of how she was able to go so dark for the film? Hope you enjoy!

Mercedes voice as the voice Pazuzu is the most iconic and scariest voice ever heard on screen Her voice was terrifying and still to this day gives me the Chills! The Exorcist Is A Masterpiece and i'm so happy that it's still getting more love from horror fans!
💯
Agreed
I was 8 years old when I saw it on a Saturday night ...I'll never forget I slept with the lights on that night...real talk
To get her voice like that.. she drank whiskey, smoked cigarettes! And drank raw eggs!… genius!
It was not fair that Linda Blair did not get the Oscar. She deserved it. Filming in a cold room. With only a nightgown. The film should of won more Oscars including makeup.
Linda Licata Agreed!
She def shuda beat tatum oneal
There was not even the category of Oscar for best makeup at that time. The category only started in the 80's
they would have won every category...the special effects and makeup alone was oscar worthy
And had her back broken in a scene and that's the scene we see in the movie! I mean come on!
If Mercedes Mccambridge yells "I'll get you for this!" In that demon voice I would have shit my pants
🤣 You and me both my friend!
Mercedes was a bad ass!
@@violetbrown2372 she really was!

@@kimmyfreak200 😀
Holy crap, her actual rendition of it at age 70 gave me chills. I need to know more about her
She wrote an autobiography. Her story ends up actually being very sad.
@NocturnalHorrors her son John murdered his family Halloween I believe in Little Rock Ark in the 80's.
@@JoRN1222And while wearing a Freddy Kruger mask.
@cricket34 yes! I forgot that part.
@@cricket34 It wasn't a Freddy Krueger mask. It was a generic "creepy old man" mask that you could buy at the dollar store. You're conflating the fact that his wife rented "A Nightmare on Elm Street" and "Eddie Murphy: Delirious" the night they were massacred.
A vocal peformance straight from hell it's amazing 🤩
Perfectly said!
Absolutely!
There is no Exorcist without Mercedes McCambridge!
💯
It’s that voice.
It was said that Mercedes McCambridge had to eat ans consume raw eggs and drink some alcohol and some other stuff
She might ve even had to smoke to develop that voice for the demon possessed Regan

MC would be just a voice if it were not for Linda Blair’s masterful performance👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿💯
One of the most stunning, powerful and terrifying performances of all time.

The only movie I've ever watched ,...that shocked,..repulsed,..unsettled and totally and utterly captivated me all at the same time,....it's an epic film
It really is epic. Thanks for watching!
It’s the only film where I had to sleep with the lights on for three nights after watching it
@@fretboardmaster70 Experienced the same but when I read the book for the first time....I was about 12 years old....Not to mention when I saw the movie....😨

When I first watched this I thought the voice was a male actor I was shocked when I found out it was a female RIP dear lady
Dawn Finch Crazy, right? She did incredible. Thank you so much for watching!
7:58 I LOVE that last line "Oh my God it was so terrible - no it wasn't - finish your popcorn"
Farrell McNulty 😂 She’s the best!
Thanks. I couldn't understand that last word.
Wow, I just always assumed her voice had really become that gritty. I had no idea she was mainly just acting. Brilliant!
She put in serious, method-acting work! Thank you so much for watching!

@@pooochifish6015 hahaha
Pretty lady too.
AND she was already an Oscar winner too at the time, something unheard of at the time. An Oscar winner doing a horror film like this.
No horror movie ever will beat the exorcist and Mercedes voice still gives me the chills and I must have seen the movie about 10 or 15 times now
When I found out that a woman was the voice behind the little girl, I was absolutely STUNNED. 😮 I've seen a lot of women who have scratchy or deep voices and are able to do audio work better than men because of how their voices are able to work. It really is incredible how their able to portray what you wouldn't expect. 👏
Her voice is "Iconic" and a voice I never want to hear alone in my bed late at Night!!!!! R.I.P. QUEEN!!
God bless Mercedes McCambridge no other actor today would ever have done what she did in order to achieve this role. I would love to have had the opportunity to meet her. God rest her soul thank you Mercedes for everything that you’ve done.
4:43 now that is acting, this movie wouldn’t be what it is without that voice
Absolutely, there has never been a better demon voice than in this film
Alexander Adams so true!
i’ve been doing that devil voice sense i was like 4 i grew up watching scary movies like the exorcist that’s probably where i got it from and now i’m 13 and i’m really good at it i hope i can do my voice in a a movie one day
Jenny Wiegand Good luck with your journey! You can do it!
I haven't been able to sleep without visualizing Linda Blair's possessed face before bed for the last 43 years.....Wouldn't have the same effect without MM's voice. She deserved more than just a credit. Could've e made the movie with a pitch black screen with just her dialogue for 2 horrifying hours, and it would still be the scariest movie of all.
😂 that would be terrifying!
Agreed. Linda's face is the epitome of horror in this movie. I had such a hard time watching it all the way through until recently, and still do. I can't watch it in the dark or alone. 😳
The demons voices in other horror movies are nowhere near as good as Mercedes voice. She's the best demon voice ever. I think a lot of people love the exorcist just because of her demon voice chilling stuff 😱😱😱
Definitely the best demon voice ever!
@ Nocturnal Horrors: Please explain how they made her vomit pea soup. I always wanted to know how they did that.
@@richardturner6981 in the pea sup scene how it works is a plastic bit was put in her mouth simler to a horse bit with small tubes at each side & a bigger one in the middle the tubes were hidden by makeup artists and then pushed down from behind her in a bag which resulted in the pressure pushing the pea soup up through the tubes and out of her mouth. It was supposed to hit father carras in the chest but it actually got him in the face. Which he wasn't too happy about. But they kept the scene. Plus the pea soup was actually mixed with oatmeal. Hope this helps 👍
@@jonathoncoates9170 Thanks
I like the ones from the OG Evil Dead 1
damn that's horrible how Linda Blair and the movie got screwed out of all those Oscars.
The special effects Oscar bothers me the most. Totally insane. Thank you for watching!
@@NocturnalHorrors Yeah, that was criminal they got snubbed. The special effects and makeup were phenomenal.
"Oh shit, we can't just take an award away from a little girl! Let's give it to an even younger girl to be safe!"
@Madeline Tramantano That was the very reason!!
The real horror of the film is that adults allowed a child to go through hell just for a movie. Linda suffered a lot during the filming and after. She had death threats, no credit for her wonderful performance, got robbed of the Oscar and suffered from the back injury all her life because of the filming. Also, she never had a significant role after that so every time she's interviewed, all the reporters can ask about is this movie. It's like she's been cursed. Also, there was an interview of her that really broke my heart. She didn't want to be an actress, she wanted to be a vet. But they kept pushing her for movie projects, just to make money. And because of that, she never had the chance to go to college. How cruel. And, in spite of all that, she managed to stay balanced. What a great human being. I love you, Linda.
Yeah, William Friedkin is pretty well known as a director who did a lot of illegal and unethical things to get what he wanted on camera unfortunately. Thanks so much for watching!
@@NocturnalHorrors what about 12 yr old Brooke Shields in Pretty Baby?
........ looking real young.....
Well I've seen an interview where she very clearly says that Friedkin did a fabulous job keeping things light and fun on set and being pals with her. And you can see this when you watch behind the scenes footage. She is laughing a lot and appears to be having fun. Not saying it wasn't difficult but not the torture people insist was happening.@@NocturnalHorrors
Rumors are rumors. This is from Linda just recently.
"Exorcist star Linda Blair pays tribute to 'director, friend, and protector' William Friedkin
Blair wrote on Instagram. "Every actor wanted to work with him and maybe my story is the most poignant. Taking a real 13-year-old and confirming my stability to endure the journey he was about to take me and the world on. His directing came with demanding guidance, commitment and strict work ethic. His creative licensing with my performance, always thought provoking and precise with his 'on point' direction for my performance as Regan. Pushing envelopes with ground breaking special effects to ensure my performance was nothing less than shocking and unforgettable. He fiercely protected me from the maddening crowds that reared their ugly heads back in the day of the movie's release."
Don't believe everything you hear or read. She was not treated bad, just the exact opposite and this is her comments in her own voice after the passing of William Friedkin, who she called 'Billy'.

"He understood my need to remain grounded in nature, my love for animals, and giving me my first prize horse which I named 'Best Director' in his honor," the post continues. "He supported my continued love for animals and my foundation Linda Blair Worldheart, to change the world for the animals. He was my director, friend, and protector. It was an honor to know him and I am deeply saddened at this time. He changed my life forever, along with the world through my performance, and all my performances throughout my career."
The things she did and subjected herself to in order to bring that voice to life...talk about commitment. Loved her in Giant!
Mercedes was gorgeous back in the day. I would love to have been married to someone talented like her. May she Rest In Peace
andrew musca She was beautiful indeed.
The voice is what gives this demon that horror feeling. It’s brilliance. Hearing this demon it just gets under your skin.
You are so right.
You know Hollywood never ceases to amaze me....Yes, Mercedes McCambridge did an absolute fantastic job with the voice overtures, no question..but you can't be serious when they say she deserved an award and Linda Blair, what, didn't? She was only 12yrs. old when she gave the performance of a lifetime! This movie still scares me to this day..and I'm 46! My mom too, she's 77..lolol Plain and simple Linda Blair was amazing too...no doubt about it!
Nobody ever said Linda didn’t deserve an award you should take that up with the academy 😂
@@scouser2010ify Just a hypothetical question.......
she didn't give "the performance of a lifetime", she was surrounded by special effects and MERCEDES MCCAMBRIDGE. you have no understanding of what she did or didn't actually do, because you're being duped by movie magic.
Holy crap - what an incredible story. That voice is the creepiest part of the movie, and I’ve never really thought about how they did it. Great video!
It’s so creepy, right? Thanks for watching!

Mercedes had a very unique voice. If you watch some of her work, close your eyes and you can hear the demon voice. I loved listening to her speak. She didn't have an easy life.
and still doesn't get the recognition and respect she deserves
The voice MADE this movie what it was, and still is to this day. EXCEPTIONAL performances 👏👏👏

To me the main geniuses were William Peter Blatty and Friedkin
Terrified me…! What Mercedes did was beyond amazing. Can’t imagine how she managed this..had to be extremely hard takings toll on her voice, throat and emotions.
Whiskey, cigarettes and raw eggs, from what I've read. And she had a bonafide priest with her for most of the readings. Old school method acting.
@@planetofthegapes ..that’s sure dedication to your craft!! A priest there hmm ? Guess you can’t be too careful. 😀

She smoked cigarettes drank whiskey! And drank raw eggs!! To keep her voice consistent!
I don't know why but there's something so fascinating about the fact that both the voice (Mercedes McCambridge) and the face (Eileen Dietz) of Pazuzu are actually women!

@ kimmy freak 200: I'm 71now, i believe in God and Jesus Christ,but i would have a heart attack!
I was 11 years old when I first saw the movie. Now I'm 48 years. Got so much shock that it took 2 years to get over from the shock for this scary movie. Even I was unable to go the the next room of my house at night. Later on saw the film many times too. But still I feel the same chill of scariness, what I got 37 years ago. To me the voice of Pazuzu played by Mercedes McCambridge is the best scary voice of all time in the history of horror films & I don't think no other movie could super sit it. The best scariest/horror movie of all time. Hats of to Linda Blair for her exclusive performance at the age of 14 years.
Mercedes McCambridge magnificent performance
A voz de Mercedes McCambridge e a maquiagem usada....completou essa obra prima! Nunca vão fazer outro filme sobre o tema igual a esse. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

Man,this is THE GREATEST article ever made on "The Exorcist"!
I've been saying for decades that 1of the most brilliant aspects from the Film is the sound design.
I've watched it several times without any image or sound.
It's really frightening how the Movie SOUNDS horrifying even without a single image onscreen.
Not only the sound effects, the music, the noises, but mainly Mercedes McCAMBRIDGE must be credited as the most chillingly effective element of the narrative.
Thanks for pointing that out so passionately.👏👏🤘🤘

Watching the scenes without the marvellous Mercedes, Linda's performance is very good - no question. But add Mercedes vocal performance and the film shoots into the exosphere.
The sounds 'that thing upstairs' made were always the most frightening element of the film for me. Ms McCambridge really deserved greater recognition for her contribution to the most frightening film of all time, so I appreciate this video honouring her.
She really does deserve way more credit. Thanks for watching!
@@NocturnalHorrors Ms. McCambridge was a bitch though in real life. I remember when the film was originally released, and my grand mother remembered her coming into the cafe they owned (she came in in her 40's while on shoot) and she was exceptionally rude to both my grandparents, and their staff. So, she deserved everything she got. You cannot be rude just because you were an 'actress'? Hmmmm.

that film had everything, never has there been a horror film made with such quality and care basically incorporate everything that's scary, I mean just look at how many people it took to make Regan work, for that genre it's clearly the best, and you can't say that about any other genre, it's up for debate in other genres, the exorcist is a mic drop, I think in terms of quality only Poltergeist and The Shining are on that level, it's the one film I won't watch alone because it feels like it could conjure something up

In the late 70's and early 80's she was the director of the Livengrin Foundation, a rehab right down the street from me at the time. She lived in a house on the grounds. It's hard to believe that it's been 50 years since this movie was released. In all that has changed in the world since then, no one has been able to match this movie. All the new updates in technology, equipment, make-up, techniques, sound quality, etc. It makes me wonder what The Exorcist would have been like if they had 2023s equipment back in the 70s

True.
I remember when this movie came out I was only 5 years old" my teenage cousin who was babysitting me at the time wanted to see this movie so bad she and 2 of her friends dragged me along to go with them. I must say it was the most scariest experience I ever witnessed. This movie scared me to where I could not sleep in my bedroom by myself for a good month 😆. My mother thought I was just being stubborn but she didn't know that my cousin and her friends took me to see this movie without her knowing. I swore to my cousin that I would never tell anyone because if I did she would be in big trouble lol 😆. Excellent movie and I give much props to Mercedes Mc Cambridge her voice will never be duplicated and will always live in the minds of the people she scared all over the world may she R.I.P 🙏🏼 oh yeah I finally let the cat out of the bag" I waited til my late teens when I told Mom my cousin and her friends took me to see the EXORCIST and all she did was give me a smirk and shook her head... 😆 R.I.P Mom🌹🙏🏼
Amazing.
Terrible tragedy what happened with Mercedes McCambridge's son John and his family. John earned a P.hd in Economics, was hired by a Little Rock, Arkansas investment company, then started embezzling funds and transferring said funds into a secret account set-up falsely in his mother's name which his mother Mercedes knew nothing about. When John was caught, the company gave him a medical discharge and tired him. To avoid prosecution, Don begged his mother to help him pay back to the company the monies he owed it which he stole. She refused. Don then wrote a very detailed bitter suicide note, accusing his mother Mercedes of never being there for him among other things, ending the note sarcastically with, " 'Night, Mother..." John then murdered his wife, his daughters, his whole family, then killed himself. John's mother, Academy-Award- and Golden Globe-Award-winning veteran actress Mercedes McCambridge died alone in La Jolla, California, two weeks shy of her 88th birthday in 2004....
It’s such a tragic story.
Very Interesting
