  • In this video we compare the distortion characteristics for single-stage, class-A amplifiers using various BJTs, MOSFETs and JFETs. After viewing this video you will be one step closer to sounding like Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Eric Johnson, Joe Bonamassa and Slim Whitman combined!!

Thanks for this. Really liked the o'scope captures contrasting clean and distorted.

New to your channel. Really appreciate your strait forward practical approach to analysis of so many different amp designs and configurations. Takes me back to my radio room days as a electronic tech. Retired EE now but really enjoy going back over the basics. Would love to see you take on a consumer rcvr/amp (marantz, sansui etc...) with a stage by stage analysis with test results. Great channel love what you're doing.

@tonan5440 thanks! I will probably do some in-depth analysis of that kind of equipment one of these days. I am more or less trying to cover all the basics first. Hopefully I’ll be putting out content for a long time to come. 👍🏻

Excellent presentation. I like transistors but don't own a guitar. Awhile back I was doing the JFET thing and could not get my circuit to not clip, I do radio stuff so clipping is bad. I use MOSFETs for motors. I do have 10 MP-37 Russian Ge, I'll shall get a few MP-40's the PNP brother to build the darlington circuit, a Guitar might help because nothing else likes distortion. I could use some help with that. After watching a RHCP video called Dani California, the last part of that video has some serious grind. I want that!

@@planker thanks! Yeah, I used to do a lot of RF stuff too, and actually will probably do some on here eventually (probably around Topic 250 or so lol). But definitely will hit modulation techniques before then, which I’m really looking forward to (I really like the math there).
As far as the distortion goes, just about any of these circuits can be massaged to work well, but I wanted to keep them bare-bones for this test. I’ll hit this topic again soon in upcoming videos.

I like to see new channels start, so it pains me to say that you are not using many of the devices properly.
They are all able to amplify with low distortion if used correctly.

@@stevenbliss989 these amplifiers are intended to distort here. Just presenting the bare-bones gain stages used as a starting point for overdrive/distortion effects. I wouldn’t use these for hi-fi or instrumentation applications as given here. I really haven’t even addressed negative feedback in general yet. I’ll cover it eventually.

Your MPF102 biasing is crap, so of course you will get that horrid distortion.
