There was a time that Fender had a lot of strats lying around with burst finishes, and a customer would want a custom color, so they'd grab a burst and spray the custom color directly over the top to save on overhead rather than make a whole new guitar from scratch. That is why you see vintage guitars like that...
@@tessarae9127 some people like the relic look, this was popularized by the Fender CS. The look of having multiple paint coats all fading and wearing, some people are into it. So with this guitar, the blue will fade, check and chip along with the sunburst for a double relic effect
so for all the people claiming 'oh no muh no sanding', very likely both the sunburst and sea foam green are nitro laquer, meaning that sanding is not required or reccomended
I would love to see the full video of this, I did not know you could just spray paint over sunburst than cleanly. Is there any more footage ? how much would this cost ?
Official results are in: 37% of Humans prefer to leave the burst alone, 23% want to Sandpaper with 800grit first, 8% realized the last coat on the burst was 20 minutes ago, 41% want a complete different color and 4.3% are clamoring for you to hit it with an Artful Scraping in 1 hour, .023% want to ride it around the parking lot like a Skateboard.
In the UK we would label this dude as a cowboy, no prep and sprays straight on to clearcoat, i wouldnt let this guy paint my 25 year old fence let alone a guitar
What a bodge job - straight to gloss, that'll peal and bubble in months, it also looks worse that the original burst without a white undercoat to make the colour vibrant. What a tool.
Why?... While there's no shortage or bursts, there's absolutely *TONS* of seafoam green guitars out there already - and they all look alike no matter the price or brand 🤣🤣🤣🤣

This way the paint will chip and flake off revealing the Burst like it's supposed too. When Fender released custom colors 90% of the time they grabbed a rejected Burst(or sometimes a custom color) Body from their lot and sprayed the new Custom color straight over with no prep. They did this especially when they were backordered, or busy, because it cheaper to grab a reject Burst finish and do a rush job than strip it down and prep it, while charging 5% more than you would've for a Burst. If you prep it, the paint will have different properties than spraying straight over smooth Nitro Laquer.

You don’t have to sand nitro between coats. He probably did put a tack coat of clear on before he sprayed the green though.

When i do a relic paint over. I tap the areas that are going to be exposed with butchers wax. Then lift the cover paint with a plastic putty knife.

Maybe 100000 grit, looks polished not sanded

You have to but you only need to wet sound down to the paint, as long as there’s no clear coat & the body is a little rough, you’ll be okay.
I have the same color and I wanna paint on yellow but I'm suck with the spray 😵💫
Practice on cardboard. Light coats are always key. It might not looks like much is happening but that’s how smooth finishes are crated

Never spray over a tobacco burst paint job unless you want your guitar to look like 💩 no matter the color. You need to do a bit of sanding first.
