so happy to hear you make it clear that the cabinet makers quote wasn't "too expensive" or unreasonable, but just outside of your price range! its honestly shoooocking how many people dont understand the difference, and so they passionately (aggressively..) brand that anything that they arent willing to pay for as overpriced and ridiculous. i know that you guys have your heads on straight about stuff like that (especially since you have made such a variety of things yourselves, you see so clearly how much time and work goes into physical projects) so i wouldnt have expected any different, but i hope talking about it helps to clear things up for the kinds of people that would (and do!) scream at craftspeople just for setting fair prices.. all that being said, i also would not have been able to pay that quote and handmade items are pretty much always outside of my budget lol so i love seeing the diys. to anyone reading this that gets sticker shock when seeing handmade crafts for sale, maybe dip your toes into something youre interested in and it will give you a great idea of why they can be so expensive.. i started embroidery but mostly cross stitch a couple years ago (as a hobby, not to sell) and its absolutely bonkers how long it takes. the materials can be pleasantly cheap, but if i were to try to sell some of the gifts i've made, theyd be in the HUNDREDS of dollars just to compensate the time! its wild.
Add shallower diy bookshelves on top of the dressers to fill the gap. It will also make it look less cluttered and intentional. This video is so relatable. I’ve had to go through similar brainstorming in every place I have lived.
The final result looks great! I think the choice of the oak color really elevates it. This inspires me to do something similar in my own room where I also have a couple of malm dressers.

I think one of the most important things to remember when it comes to storage, ESPECIALLY for us neurodivergent people who rely on visual memory and need stuff visible to keep organized, is that your things aren’t “cluttered” if they are accessible to you, period. IMO the minimalist lifestyle has done a number on our perception of what a normal, functional house looks like, and the obsession (generally on the internet, not TSG) with having everything hidden away and “neat” and “clean” isn’t only not accessible to many people- it doesn’t even work to keep you organized depending on who you are 😂 If your home is safe in its level of cleanliness, and functions for *YOU*, it’s clean. Stack your sh-t on bookshelves, get matching closed wardrobes, display your knickknacks, sort your fridge by color- ignore the meaningless buzzword of “clutter” that’s likely irrelevant to you bc everyone functions differently and just do what you wanna do. If you like seamless, object less or minimal decorated closed door cabinets, great! If you feel cozy and more able to read if your books are stacked on the floor against the wall, great! There is no right way to “organize”, and how “organized” your home may seem to the internet isn’t ever a valuation of worth. This final product is gorgeous and as always I’m amazed at what Kelsey can do wielding the power of Marketplace 😂🥰

Love this! Thoughts that could make it more built-in looking. I have a revamped tarva that I bought a live edge piece for the topper. Turns out it is fairly easy to replace the top of a dresser with different material. If you could get a similar veneer countertop it could span the whole top and look veeeery custom.
Great solution! The MALMs look fantastic opposite the stairs. I also loved your solution for the gap where the laundry sits - so creative and you'll have extra parts if you want to do any additional DIYs in the future. I was thinking you could even take the drawer fronts off the remaining unit and turn them into bookshelves on one of the walls. Then create a picture ledge to hang just above the gap, where you can add art or even place books with pretty covers. I love using books as art, too, if you have pretty ones! I wish I was as much in love with library books as you are. They certainly are more environmentally friendly! But I was an English major in school, and having my own "library" is a comfort to me. I regularly purge and donate ones I know I won't read again, so I can add new ones, and I try to buy second hand when I can. So I guess I'm doing my part. Haha. I think I'd have a very hard time giving up the book collection, though.

Repaint the jewlery wardrobe a richer green...change the fabric light shade to green adjacent? Is a green rug too much...yeah probably. I love love love that bench and am invested in its redemption arc.
An idea 💡 What if you put a neutral blanket over de bench so it neutralizes a little bit of that green? And I loved this idea! Since I have the same problem with one of my walls, I might do the same with a shelf unifying two units 😊

Awesome 😊 I think some things that would also look great would be using the leftover drawer pieces from the extra dresser to make a door for in front of the laundry so that the drawer front lines continue all the way from wall to wall and hide the laundry. Also, making a strip to go behind the dressers that you can build outlets into or a way to neatly feed cords through. I also think shelves for the books above would look nice. Could even paint them to tie in the green. Love the channel, I never miss a vid 😘
If you had space under your bed, or if not, just rise the bed with risers under the legs. You could use this space for extra storage under the bed, just use caster wheels, attach 4 casters to the bottom of each drawer drawer that was leftover from other dress. If you can see drawers they would match your dress area and stairs.

I did this exact thing when we moved to our new apartment! Looked for ages for the malm oak dressers on Facebook market place and eventually found the them! Couldn’t fit two oak malms next to each other either and just use the gap for our laundry storage. Getting another dresser to use as the top for the gap is so smart!! I might try this as I’ve been wanting to get the “built in look” as well but might have to get creative as I don’t have any power tools… so cool to watch something come together that I have in my home! Gave me such a good idea on what to finally do with that gap!
Great job re-using pieces and creating what you wanted at fraction of out-sourcing custom built piece… I would have kept going by building a face and top piece to give it all a continuous all one piece built in look… the top could also go back and hide your gaps needed for all your added outlets

It looks amazing! One thing I think could help with the built in look is removing the wall trim so that the whole thing is flush to the wall but I know that may not be feasible. It may have also allowed enough space to fit the other malm dresser in full (altho my measurements may be off just by looking!). Either way, it’s always amazing to see what ideas you are able to come up with!

I’ve always thought custom cabinets were too expensive to be justified most of the time and this is an A+ hack! …..another idea (not sure of feasibility) could you use pieces from the dresser used for parts to make a “flap” to cover the cord area instead of books? Like drilling cord holes ect in it and making a long skinny version of what you did for between the dressers.
Huge improvement! Really much more cohesive with the stairs. Try power strips with flat plugs for those outlets! Will let you push those dressers closer to the wall.
i think to make the emerald work, you could repaint the walls to a different, lighter shade of green- like a light sage, or a different neutral- not pure white. and (in my opinion) I would not do pampas grass in the vases. I would back the bench up to sit flush against the stairs if space allows. you could use the extra pieces of the dresser for shelving on the left side, above the dresser, as well. love the look of the custom piece!
The way you designed the connecting section MADE the piece. Genius to use the dresser top and some backing to tie it all together. And the art "rent-to-buy" service sounds cool.
I had another idea, you could cut holes out in the back of the dresser to have access to the plugs, you would then drop the cord behind the dresser unit and then pull the drawer out and grab the cord where the hole for outlets and plug it in. You would't have to move your books and things to get to the cords from the top to plug in or have to move the unit out to access the plugs. Just open the drawer and plug in. I would just cut the holes the same size and location as the plugs on wall as outlet you could push the dress against the wall the outlet fit in the whole perfect cover the outlets, may be leave a little room to drop the 🔌 plug.
I customised Malm dressers because they wouldn't fit into my space either. I needed one with half the width, so I took a standard one for the sides and two bedside tables for top, bottom and drawers. With some extra cutting and drilling for the trim, it worked out out really nicely.
Wonderful simple solution if you can’t afford or make your own built-in. Personally don’t like the pleated fabric wall sconce, but the faux built-in turned out nice. Extra storage is always a win.
I love that you made him those visibility bands because you wanted him to be safe! I was a little disappointed that he didn't want to wear them. That would have made me feel so special!
I might remember this incorrectly, but I think she diy'ed these bands for a video few years ago. I think Kelsey just took them home and happened to find them when she was going through her drawers.
GREAT JOB!!! I am so ENVIOUS of how you find the best stuff second hand. I live in a smaller town with just three resale shops and there just isn't' much to choose from. I do use our local Marketplace but anything I want moved like yesterday! My husband and I are living in a 1`,258 sq. ft condo together. That can be a challenge!!
The added touch i would use is if you still had the drawer fronts you could creat a faux front door or accordian slide to hide the basket totally. Just a thought.
I thought you were going to use the second smaller dresser to stack…that would have made a lot of extra storage. Love how it turned out. You are brave to put anything with liquid or flames on the steps…I would knock it over, for sure!

IKEA makes some of the best hackable stuff. I made a couple of custom units for my living room out of Ivar cabinets and people keep telling me I could sell them for 5 times what they cost to make. I don't like the finishing touch but i know it's a "for now" but I hope u change the style. I’ve done something very similar in my bedroom using 2 malm dressers and left a gap for a vanity area/bench! I was able to find a very similar oak veneer piece to use as a countertop to carry across
I really like what you have done here! ❤❤ My only suggestion, if you care to hear it, is I would arrange the books on the wall, in a scattered shelving group, on their sides. (Hope that makes sense!) That would make the desks look less cluttered, and help take up some wall space, while adding a lot of color to the empty wall.

Love it.. I have a suggestion.. Do a floating shelf above the canibets but below the window painted in the same colour of the wall as a bookshelf.. In this way the counter top will be clear of books and then the decor or that jewelery box can be styled on the countertop for spaciously..
Such a great use of ikea stuff to look custom but not cost the $1200 that other people are paying for ikea wardrobe units. But… could you maybe get some pieces of 1 x2 (or use more of the “parts” dresser to make small/short side supports then just take like 2 long skinny pieces of wood to make a little top for the gap between the dressers & the wall & just attach them using some hinges hidden underneath? It could just fold down and rest on the side supports and it’d give you access to the plugs without having the gap behind it. You could do it in 2 pieces so u don’t have to move everything on top to get to the plugs & idk put a thumb hole at 1 end or even like a little pop up magnet thing on the supports so u wouldn’t need any hardware to lift it… idk just having that space for things to fall down behind it would make me crazy.
Okayyyy hear me out… add another dresser on top of one of the dressers on the side, it’ll give it some height which will make it look less cluttered, add storage and overall depth to the built in look!

Love this idea! I’ve always thought custom cabinets were too expensive to be justified most of the time and this is an A+ hack! …..another idea (not sure of feasibility) could you use pieces from the dresser used for parts to make a “flap” to cover the cord area instead of books? Like drilling cord holes ect in it and making a long skinny version of what you did for between the dressers.
So economic yet beautiful!! I thought you could use the drawer fronts as shelve boards in case you need even more storage.

Huge improvement! Really much more cohesive with the stairs. Try power strips with flat plugs for those outlets! Will let you push those dressers closer to the wall.
i think to make the emerald work, you could repaint the walls to a different, lighter shade of green- like a light sage, or a different neutral- not pure white. and (in my opinion) I would not do pampas grass in the vases. I would back the bench up to sit flush against the stairs if space allows. you could use the extra pieces of the dresser for shelving on the left side, above the dresser, as well. love the look of the custom piece!
I love the malm, we use a three drawer one to store all our babies cloth diapers, clothers, bathing stuff etc. and it's amazing!
The way you designed the connecting section MADE the piece. Genius to use the dresser top and some backing to tie it all together. And the art "rent-to-buy" service sounds cool.
I had another idea, you could cut holes out in the back of the dresser to have access to the plugs, you would then drop the cord behind the dresser unit and then pull the drawer out and grab the cord where the hole for outlets and plug it in. You would't have to move your books and things to get to the cords from the top to plug in or have to move the unit out to access the plugs. Just open the drawer and plug in. I would just cut the holes the same size and location as the plugs on wall as outlet you could push the dress against the wall the outlet fit in the whole perfect cover the outlets, may be leave a little room to drop the 🔌 plug.

I customised Malm dressers because they wouldn't fit into my space either. I needed one with half the width, so I took a standard one for the sides and two bedside tables for top, bottom and drawers. With some extra cutting and drilling for the trim, it worked out out really nicely.
Wonderful simple solution if you can’t afford or make your own built-in. Personally don’t like the pleated fabric wall sconce, but the faux built-in turned out nice. Extra storage is always a win.
That back panel under the open space so you couldn’t see the white wall made all the difference, just amazing.
I love that you made him those visibility bands because you wanted him to be safe! I was a little disappointed that he didn't want to wear them. That would have made me feel so special!

I might remember this incorrectly, but I think she diy'ed these bands for a video few years ago. I think Kelsey just took them home and happened to find them when she was going through her drawers.
Personally I think it looks great. And you certainly can't beat the price. As usual you did a really fine job.
GREAT JOB!!! I am so ENVIOUS of how you find the best stuff second hand. I live in a smaller town with just three resale shops and there just isn't' much to choose from. I do use our local Marketplace but anything I want moved like yesterday! My husband and I are living in a 1`,258 sq. ft condo together. That can be a challenge!!
The added touch i would use is if you still had the drawer fronts you could creat a faux front door or accordian slide to hide the basket totally. Just a thought.

IKEA makes some of the best hackable stuff. I made a couple of custom units for my living room out of Ivar cabinets and people keep telling me I could sell them for 5 times what they cost to make. This looks incredible, Kelsey. I have the Malm series in my bedroom and you've inspired me to get creative with it. 💕

Too many vitamins aren't good for you either. Check with your GP is you need them and if you do: which vitamins specifically you need to add to your diet (and if you can do that by a diet change instead of pills).
Don't just pop some vitamins without personalised research and check-ins.
Love the Pelican but think some of the excess wood could've made a floating shelf also in the background but Esthetically it's very pleasing ...what else you gonna make out of the rest of the unused part of the purchased Dresser

I absolutely loooove the malm dresser and this hack is brilliant 😍 have 3 of them in this same colour in my room. So versatile and has a very sleek, minimalist look.
I’ve done something very similar in my bedroom using 2 malm dressers and left a gap for a vanity area/bench! I was able to find a very similar oak veneer piece to use as a countertop to carry across
I really like what you have done here! ❤❤ My only suggestion, if you care to hear it, is I would arrange the books on the wall, in a scattered shelving group, on their sides. (Hope that makes sense!) That would make the desks look less cluttered, and help take up some wall space, while adding a lot of color to the empty wall.

Love it.. I have a suggestion.. Do a floating shelf above the canibets but below the window painted in the same colour of the wall as a bookshelf.. In this way the counter top will be clear of books and then the decor or that jewelery box can be styled on the countertop for spaciously..
Or even if the shelf is place higher up to the left and to the right of the window..
Such a great use of ikea stuff to look custom but not cost the $1200 that other people are paying for ikea wardrobe units. But… could you maybe get some pieces of 1 x2 (or use more of the “parts” dresser to make small/short side supports then just take like 2 long skinny pieces of wood to make a little top for the gap between the dressers & the wall & just attach them using some hinges hidden underneath? It could just fold down and rest on the side supports and it’d give you access to the plugs without having the gap behind it. You could do it in 2 pieces so u don’t have to move everything on top to get to the plugs & idk put a thumb hole at 1 end or even like a little pop up magnet thing on the supports so u wouldn’t need any hardware to lift it… idk just having that space for things to fall down behind it would make me crazy.
Okayyyy hear me out… add another dresser on top of one of the dressers on the side, it’ll give it some height which will make it look less cluttered, add storage and overall depth to the built in look!
