    One of the greatest sound tracks in any game ever made. First I had Sound Blaster and played this game. When I got Roland SCC-1 and started up this game, I was totally blown up.. I just listened to music of this game for hours and even didn't played the game. 08x are the best

    Man, I could just listen to Woodtick and all of its variations all day. They're really calming and their MT-32 recordings do them so much justice. In fact, this is probably objectively the best version of the soundtrack, though I do have a soft spot for the Adlib version much like a lot of people do MI1's PC speaker soundtrack.

      I can't understand people who actually prefer PC Speaker instead of the MT-32 or at least the Adlib/OPL music. :P
      Personally I always prefer MT-32 because it usually has the best means to convey the composer's ideas. But I'm biased anyway. ^_^

    When I got my first ever job, it was long, exhausting, and I had to wake up extremely early to drive forever to get there. It took a long chunk of my day (and my life) from me, with very few minutes of free time before I had to go to sleep for the day. I was stressing the fuck out and started to have a crisis because I realised that I had nothing to look forward to in life.
    But that stress was eased greatly by the theme of Woodtick + all the variations. These songs (especially the Swamp Rot Inn variation) are my healing songs. They made my life tolerable. I got excited to hear these before sleeping.

      ryan davis That was essentially why my father actually bought one. However, my brother eventually heard that it doubled as a ridiculously good MIDI device and was capable of extraordinary things when the games properly supported it. So, when we finally got it hooked up properly and started - out of all games - MI2, our jaws dropped the second the main theme played.

      the only thing that lets the MT-32 down is the lack of General Midi. So if something is written for that rather than the MT-32 specifically then it doesn't sound right and some of the instraments will be wrong

      @astralfields1696 Před 3 lety

      @@rickyyoung If something is written for general MIDI then you have to use the SC-55 or 88. The MT-32 is a special instrument in its own right that is best used for MIDI specifically composed for it.

I've been planning to redo these tracks in the style of Curse of Monkey island and Escape. The mt32 versions help so much with figuring out what instruments they intended to play on certain parts. Also, the unused track at the end is actually the phatt island waterfall that leads to rum rogers jr. One of my favorite tracks in the game!

    Consummate compositions without a doubt. I prefer the adlib version myself (let's be real - sampled drums will always sound cheesy - at least with adlib there is no pretense that it's even close to being the "real thing" and you can focus on the compositions themselves and not get distracted by samples) but in the end I figure the compositions themselves transcend any choice of sound hardware. Absolutely perfect! And it should be noted that the iMuse system contribute in no small part to how the soundtrack is perceived in-game since the music adapt wonderfully to the changing situations of the game and blend from scene to scene. So in that sense it's hard to capture the magic that the music plays when actually playing the game. But I reckon this is the next best thing ;). Thanks for posting! :D

      Just to say I have downloaded the tracks and I am really happy with them. Thank you so much for the great website. Just a quick question, have the Amiga tunes been stereo "blended", or are they "hard" panned (2 channels per speaker)? To my ears, some sound blended and others sound "hard panned".
      I'm interested in this because I sometimes like to remaster Amiga tunes for stereo, and it's generally easier to work with them when the stereo panning is 100% hard.

    Great video - the Monkey Island 2 soundtrack is great, and of the original '90s variations of it I think the MT-32 comes out tops for me.
    One quick question - I notice the "Story" segment (02:15) just loops and fades out; however, in-game the song has a proper ending which plays when you exit the scene just prior to the Part 1 title card. I know fixing it in the video would be too much hassle as it'd require a re-upload, but if you have any plans to revisit this set in future would it be possible to recapture the song with its ending segment and update the FLAC archive? = )

    • @VengefulChip
      @VengefulChip  Před 8 lety +3

      +CrispyMcAker About your question: Sorry, but I won't revisit the soundtrack itself in the way you proposed, because this is the format in which I post the soundtracks. Track 00c loops like that because back when, game devs made some songs like that for slower computers which took longer to process the game script (and which would cause the song to end abruptly after a while if it were not for the loop). You get that a lot in the Sierra sets I record. As for the ending segment for track 00c, you're right, I should've included that as well, and I will do when I'll do some "housekeeping" round for the soundtracks I posted, to fix mistakes and such, but I'll have that segment be added as a separate track (00d), not at the end of of track 00c. Hope that makes sense to you.
      I know it can be jarring to listen to the soundtrack like this, but this is the format I chose to record all of the games I worked on, and there are also countless other videos which recreate the intro of the game much more faithfully :)
      (or at least in the way they played on the speedier machines of that era)

      Thanks for such a speedy reply and for clarifying a few things - glad to hear you're eventually planning on adding the segment as a separate track at some point in future.

      Unfortunately as of late, I wasn't able to work on more stuff due to my day-job (which I really hate), but I hope to be able to post more stuff in the following months.
      Also, I'll need to edit my first reply, as I wrote it in a rush, and as such it has some inconsistencies.

    • @CrispyMcAker
      @CrispyMcAker Před 8 lety +1

      +VengefulChip No problem - looking forward to any future uploads as and when you have enough time to work on more. = )
      Also, one quick update: I played through the game the other day and noticed another short track that's missing in this video. Between 61a and 61b, in-game there's another series of chords which play as LeChuck falls over once his leg has been ripped off, but it's not present in this video. Presumably this missing track should be 61b, and the current 61b would become 61c. Thought I'd better mention it so that it's all listed in one place if you do get time to revisit this set in future. = )

    • @Kenji314159
      @Kenji314159 Před 8 lety +1

      Hey, thanks a lot for your explanation of how you did it. So you actually ran the game and went into all the places ingame and triggered all the songs in the game and then captured them as midi files (in realtime), which you later put through the MUNT emulator? I'm kinda baffled in 2016 it's still so hard to extract that stuff, that's very interesting. You're doing good work here. May I suggest another classic title for high quality MIDI recording? Albion by BlueByte. Its music is notoriously hard to extract because the audio engine is custom and plays some ambient sounds that belong into the music.

    • @VengefulChip
      @VengefulChip  Před 8 lety +1

      I forgot to mention that a more detailed summary of how I extracted stuff is posted on MI2's entry on vengefulchip.tk
      Also I forgot to mention that I also tampered with the resulting midi files when I got them out of DOSBox, as some ambiental "sounds" were getting in the way, or to modify the transitions between songs so they would sound as they should.
      Thanks for the compliments, and as for Albion, I'm not really looking for difficult-to-rip games to work on :P

    Is there a place in MI2 (or even another game ??) where the variations blend with each others when we switch scene, as in Wood Tick ? It's like it's the only place where they really took advantage of iMuse. For me iMuse is synonymous for the transitions in Woodtick, but it's really not; it's a way to better integrate the events in the game with the soundtrack, but I don't really a good example

      +Bloodlyshiva You're not off by a lot, depending on what you actually meant by "full or fake orchestral and stuff" bit.

      +Bloodlyshiva Tech is changing for that. Rise of the Tomb Raider apparently has a music system that can do something similar with pre-recorded music.
      Obviously this might involve recording at least some of the instruments separately and mixing them with the rest within the game engine.

      The marble levels in Mario Galaxy managed that, by recording all the instruments separately and stuff- it's really impressive, and it was on the Wii in 2007, so yeah, we have the tech!
      It's just that not many use it, as it's not really always needed.

    Great soundtrack! Does parts of "Sham Lottery" sound a little like "All I Want For Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth" to anyone else?
