Anybody else obsessed with chili mango/chamango? I could literally eat that stuff for the rest of my life 🤤...but I'm pretty sure I would die so let's just wear mango inspired makeup for now! 😅
I love love love this color combo 😍 Warm tones for the warm weather! I wish I were on a tropical vacation so I could blend in with the fruits haha 🥭
Aside from some life updates, I opened up about being SE Asian and struggling with glorifying E Asian beauty standards (and why I stopped listening to K-Pop). I'm usually pretty reserved and don't open up about a lot on my channel but this is something that's been asked about pretty often (since I've touched on it briefly in the past) and wanted to share with you. I haven't answered in the past bc I'm not very well-spoken and was also kind of embarrassed but I think opening this topic up for debate can help people also going thru it. I hope this answered some of your questions! If there's anything else I can clarify or help you with, let me know 💫

I'm Korean, not Vietnamese, but I definitely agree with a lot of what Jessica is saying about how kpop can have an unhealthy influence on people, like, not even just non-Koreans, but also Koreans and Korean Americans. Plus, Vietnam and Southeast Asia has been colonized by China and the West, making their beauty standards more susceptible to Eastern and Western beauty standards that don't necessarily align with the natural beauty typically found in Southeast Asia.

I'm Korean and really appreciate your talk on Koreaboos and the standards against South East Asians. Personally, international kpop fans make me feel super uncomfortable and I think it's because so many people bullied me for eating korean food and listening to kpop, and now the same people are striving to be who I am. I always tell people to love their culture first, and am really happy to know you do!

I feel this on such a deep level.. I remember being in second grade and not wanting to bring 김밥 for lunch or even drink 식혜 because kids made fun of me for it and the fact that there was rice in the drink... And now, I'm in college and was waiting to order Starbucks and the girl taking my drink order asked me if I was Korean and when I said I was, she literally said that Korean culture was her "thing" and how much she loved it, etc.. I know she didn't mean any harm, but I don't think anyone's culture should be another person's "thing".. I love it when all Asians get represented because there's so many things that distinguish us despite so many non-Asians that think we're all the same lol.

A lot of people who picked on me for simply being mixed, eating my lunch and listening to that “strange ass music” are the same ones who listen to K-pop (only BTS really) now too. It honestly confuses me but karma will get them eventually. I hope things got better for you! Also in case you were wondering, I grew up in Korea for several years! My parents were stationed there, and a lot of Korean culture still sticks with us today!

East Asian beauty standards are so harmful, and although I am not Southeast Asian I think y'all are beautiful and deserve more representation, because Asia is so much more diverse than just Korea China and Japan. Southeast Asians are beautiful and just as valid as East Asians, more people need to recognize that.

you pull off yellow blush so well!! I'm glad you talked about your self-love journey, it's crazy how our environment has such an impact on how we view ourselves. I'm Viet & Chinese but was much more proud of my Vietnamese side when I was a kid due to the way people would talk about East Asians in the area. my parents were also influenced by beauty standards but in another way (they'd say I was too pale/need to tan or I'd look sick which isn't a great mentality either imo, wish all skin tones were seen as equally beautiful) so although my situation was different, I always love hearing about everyone else's experiences & becoming more educated on these issues 💕 thank you for sharing this with us!

I totally understand, in high school i really hated my skin color because i wasn't pale enough and because i have olive undertones, when i tried to get paler, i looked sickly green and would starve myself to fit in with my international student friends. They would also treat me like i was inferior to them because im half filipino and half guamanian so i would hate my heritage and didn't really learn to embrace myself until the end of college. That was well said. Been hearing the “You look korean!” phrase everywhere here in the Philippines, and it saddens me to think that people would take it as a compliment. Our country lately has been obsessed with anything related to kpop, it’s becoming unhealthy. It has become a standard of beauty.
Our country is already bad enough with all the “skin whitening” the whiter the prettier mentality, and now another wave of standards is hitting us again.

I totally agree with this. It’s very exhausting try not to put myself in those beauty standard in Korea. I have a low self-esteem but it gets worst especially in Korea.
I had lived in Europe and Japan a while and all my friends there were always encouraging and complimenting of how they dressed up and put make-up to each other when we meet up, in a way that they respect each other’s styles and see people as who they are.
But when I came back to Korea, quite many people around me kept telling me why did I put make-up like that or how I dressed, just because I don’t have the similar style they have here.
The most irritating comment I’ve heard was, there was a guy at work and he literally asked me if I dyed my hair green to get people’s attention lol and I replied him no I dyed my hair because ‘I’ like it. And he gave me a look like ‘no shit’ like he couldn’t believe me.😂
Sometimes it’s very stressful even tho I try not to give a shit about it.
Don’t get me wrong I love Korea and everything just that side is sick and unhelpful to me.

this is my fave makeup look of yours. and about the kpop thing, i was struggling with the same thing for a while. used to be bullied for being fat at school, (im vietnamese btw), i always look at those skinny girls and convinced myself that i have to be that skinny and that beautiful and fair to get compliments or for my crush to like me back, stuff like that. but getting to know myself as i got older and being able to put on makeup had made me feel a little more confident. i couldn't express how much beauty gurus like you, michelle and many others have had such a great impact on me and how i think about myself

omg we had the same situation when i was VERY into kpop. i realized that i was like in a loop hole being obsessed with looks and styles and i'm being eaten by my own insecurities during that time. let's face it kpop isn't really popular because of the music but bc of how the kpop idols looks. it made me hate my own skin too. and GOD the fandom's are so fucking toxic as well. it was just a year ago when i decided to just be a casual fan of the music and not be very into fandoms and stuff. i'm also growing old and not in my teens anymore sooooo lol. thank you for sharing your past jessica! love this look on you as always. 💝

Ty so much for talking about this topic!! It's also sad and crazy that within cultures (like even as a Korean) most ppl don't naturally live up to crazy Korean beauty standards!! Literally the ppl that you'd think are "born with it" can't look like that bc of skin color, body type, eye shape, etc resulting in soo much plastic surgery (not that all plastic surgery is bad) and insecurity. It's so sad and destructive and 100000% needs to be addressed - tysm for opening up a wider dialogue between Asian/ SE Asian CZcamsrs/ viewers:3

I loved how you discussed being Southeast Asian, our beauty standards, and how kpop has affected your self perspective. As a Lao American girl who’s listened to kpop for 10 years now, I can definitely understand you! I always felt different from East Asians, especially on how I looked. It felt weird and isolating. But now I’m in college and I’ve joined a Southeast Asian Student Union and realized how special my culture is and how it has shaped who I am. I always love your videos and would love to hear more on your relationship with being Vietnamese. Sending love ❤️

that whole south east asian thing, i didnt see it as an issue up until this point, my family literally tells me that i look japanese or korean and not vietnamese, and i always took it as a compliment.
i really didnt see but felt that there was a deep rooted minority complex towards east asians even though i took it for granted that we asians stook together.
i did notice that back in the day, i really thrived to be more like the european kids im surrounded by but now with all the kpop i thought i had finally accepted myself as an asian person yet tried to be someone im not
nobody talks about this problem but it should be adressed more

im so glad you are talking about this. im not asian at all but in my beginning days of kpop, i began to do k-style makeup and tried to replicate the effect but of course it looked pretty bad on my features. i lowkey was a koreaboo and when i started watching your videos over a year ago, you really shocked me out of it. i was like “here is a beautiful asian women who WAS NOT doing korean make up tutorials.” i was shocked and i loved how makeup just looked so good on you. i started realizing i can like kpop without trying to change myself and soon began matching my makeup style to yours. my eyes are pretty small and the lid space isn’t as big as most make up artists i see so i began replicating kstyle makeup but it made me want to change myself or wish i was a different race. now im proud ofc but thank you for this video
