A rattlesnake's rattle isn't like a maraca, with little bits shaking around inside. So how exactly does it make that sound?

DEEP LOOK is a ultra-HD (4K) short video series created by KQED San Francisco and presented by PBS Digital Studios. See the unseen at the very edge of our visible world. Explore big scientific mysteries by going incredibly small.
Rattlesnakes are ambush predators, relying on staying hidden to get close to their prey. They don’t sport the bright colors that some venomous snakes use as a warning to predators.
Fortunately, rattlesnakes have an unmistakable warning, a loud buzz made to startle any aggressor and hopefully avoid having to bite.
If you hear the rattlesnake’s rattle here’s what to do: First, stop moving! You want to figure out which direction the sound is coming from. Once you do, slowly back away.
If you do get bitten, immobilize the area and don't overly exert yourself. Immediately seek medical attention. You may need to be treated with antivenom.
DO NOT try to suck the venom out using your mouth or a suction device.
DO NOT try to capture the snake and stay clear of dead rattlesnakes, especially the head.
--- How do rattlesnakes make that buzzing sound?
The rattlesnake’s rattle is made up of loosely interlocking segments made of keratin, the same strong fibrous protein in your fingernails. Each segment is held in place by the one in front and behind it, but the individual segments can move a bit. When the snake shakes its tail, it sends undulating waves down the length of the rattle, and they click against each other. It happens so fast that all you hear is a buzz and all you see is a blur.
--- Why do rattlesnakes flick their tongue?
Like other snakes, rattlesnakes flick their tongues to gather odor particles suspended in liquid. The snake brings those scent molecules back to a special organ in the roof of their mouth called the vomeronasal organ or Jacobson's organ. The organ detects pheromones originating from prey and other snakes.

As a snake lover, I'm glad that there is heavy talk about how rattle snakes aren't actually the devil just trying to bite ankles. It's all self protection
But no talk about the decline in the 'Rattle' part, like the ones that make noise, have been getting killed.
I always knew it. After all, snakes are nothing, but animals. And animals kill to defend themselves, their territories & to eat.
It is for me
Do you like snake meat as well?
I've had 2 different rattlesnakes chase me before, one chased me 20 yards back to my truck then tryed to climb under my truck. The other chased me 10 feet then went in a bush. It depends on the temperature of that individual snake, some just want to get away, others want to bring the fight to you.

Love it! Thank you for giving these misunderstood snakes a fair shake.
A lot of people think that they are hyper aggressive, but they just want to be left alone. Often times when they bite in self defence, adults will choose not to envenomate.
They only rattle when caught in the open. 9 times out of 10, they will stay silent and you could walk right by them in striking range and have noooo idea. They are pretty chill.
As the saying goes: "If you leave them alone, they will leave you alone."
Plus they got camouflage so you wouldn’t even know you walked by one unless it rattled
"Rattlesnakes inspire fear."
Me: cute.
"I mean, just look at that face."

@@grimmmike_1337 Me: Awwww you'r so Kawaii when ur mad

sarah azalia actually rattlesnakes are vipers. Viper comes from the Latin “Viperidae” which is a *family* of snakes, the VENOMOUS ones in fact, it’s like a branch, and rattlesnakes belong to that branch. Other venomous families are “Elapidae” where cobras are from. The rest of the snakes aren’t venomous like the snakes belonging to the “Boidae” and “Pythonidae” families (boas and pythons) , as well as Colubridae (corn snakes, rat snakes) etc.
This is really cool. I don't think I have heard an explanation of how the rattle actually works
Basically the rattle meanes: "Please leave me alone i'm very introverted and extremely socially akward."
I just found my spirit animal

The writing this episode is fantastic. And all those gorgeous shots of those snakes! Absolutely wonderful work! (Now hopefully those snakes can go back to relaxing and checking around for lunch.)
They look kind of like cats but long and legless.
They act like one too except they send u to the hospital.
Cat can send you to hospital too!
@@ScienceDiscoverer True dat .o.
My cat almost sent me to the hospital once. Have a scar right next to my eye. Any closer, and I could’ve been blind
I’d rather be 5 feet away from a rattlesnake than 5 feet away from a lion
If a cat swipe at the side of ur neck, it’s light out. I wouldn’t wanna get whacked by a cat. Bleeding out would suck.
The scariest thing about rattlers (at least where I live) is they are evolving to have smaller rattles or not to rattle at all, because if a farmer hears one, they kill it. It’s like how elephants are evolving smaller tusks to avoid poachers. A sneaky snek is an alive snek. I personally prefer to get the warning and leave the little guys alone.

I always feel like I'm the only one who thinks snakes are cute
Ikr! My dad is so scared of them because he apparently got chased when he was a kid but I asked him why doesn't try to get rid of that fear and he said snakes are evil aswell....said so in the bible 😐😐
There's a reason why I doubt many of the bibles words.
Daniel Acedilla Now THAT'S a good reason to doubt the bible's validity. Though remember that, in spite of what some people might say, the bible is meant as some kind of moral guideline. However due to its extremely obtuse writing it is far too easy to interpret what it says in any way you want. That's why there so many varieties of Christianity in spite of the fact there's only one book most of them follow
They always look so angry and I think that's adoreable.

I wonder why vipers only in North America developed the rattle but everywhere else, vipers still shake their tails regardless of a rattle.
Maybe it's also a vestigial reflex? Of something there once was, maybe? 🤷🏿♂️
Theres south America rattlesnakes. I'm pretty sure there are some in the middle east to.
Theres a snake that's kinda like a rattlesnake but its called spider tailed horned viper instead of a rattle it has spider looking tail that it moves around as a lure.
@@rangernation4538 I guess the Americas have the rattles and rest of the world don't. However, that spider tail looks like another adaptation to give emphasis to shake their tail.

Fun fact! It’s not just rattlesnakes that shake their tail to try and scare you. Other snakes can do it also, it just doesn’t make a noise. I have a corn snake and when I first got him he would do that all the time. He would tap his tail against the ground and make a thumping noise.

Yes
Danger maraca tailed nope rope

When I was little, I used to pick up snakes that slithered into our backyard and bring them into the house. They were harmless garter snakes and I heard that some people keep boas and pythons as pets, making me want a pet snake. But when I got a little older, we moved to a place that was home to rattlesnakes and I haven’t done that since
