    Knocked it out of the park, Mary! A great presentation. I've been milling for a couple years and so enjoy it. Still learning and making adjustments, but I love the whole process. I'm geared more to the sourdough side of things, and while that adds another element to it all, it's been a wonderful journey. I agree with you... don't give up, know there will be pitfalls, but keep going. I, too, like how the Bible compares our Messiah with wheat, that's a study all its own. Of all the options He could have used in the "Give us this day...", He chose bread. 🍞🌾Cheers!

    Learning about how to make fresh milled bread and how to eat in a more biblical way are two super exciting subjects that I can’t seem to get enough of :)! I love your tips and recommendations, they’re so very helpful, especially to a beginner like me. I’d love to hear about your experiences making different bread product such as pita bread, bagels, tortillas etc (bread other than traditional loaves). It’d be fun to delve into breads from different parts of the world too (made from fresh milled grains of course), like Japanese milk bread, German pumpernickel & rye, Hawaiin sweet bread, croissants and/or any others you’d be interested in trying. Lastly, incorporating fresh milled bean flour into recipes would be really fun, like black bean brownies, or red bean flour cake 😊

    I started out just using store-bought flours when I first started baking bread -- and then started buying whole organic wheatberries, rye berries, etc. when I had NO idea how much better it was to mill at home. I was doing it because I knew they would last so much longer than flour. Retired and on a fixed income, buying more appliances seemed impossible -- but I did already have a high-speed blender (a Blendtec in my case) and after discovering I could mill grain in that (no more than 2 cups at a time is best), it at least got me on my way.
    Then a combination of frustration with my bread results (especially after kind of giving up now and again -- which did NOT help matters), got me to looking at the Nutrimill Artiste Mixer which was still more than I could afford, but when they had a sale for the basic one at $120 off I just literally emptied my bank account to get it. Am I glad I did? YOU BET...!!! I only learned in the past few months the biblical implications about the bread and the whole wheat and all, and having avoided bread most of my life I now see it as my mainstay. If I had to live on ONE thing other than water it would be home-milled home baked bread and water and I know I would be THANKFUL for it!
    With this video I feel convinced I SHOULD save up for a grain mill -- and I'll probably get the one you use!
    Thanks for all the great tips, Mary! For me, what was really new was learning about the lemon juice and about Unsifted.com which I never HEARD of before. I've taken a look and I'm lovin' 'em already!

    Hi Mary, my name is Debby from Wisconsin. During the pandemic, I learned about sourdough and pretty much can make really good bread. However, I use all the bread flours, all-purpose flour, and whole wheat flour. I'm very interested in milling my own wheat and going down the road of ancient grains. I need the works, the mill, a machine that will kneed a few loafs at a time, plus the grains. I feel a bit overwhelmed. I think buying my mill first is the way to go. I want to wait until your next video comes out before I buy my mill. I want to thank you for your information videos. They have been very helpful.

    Mary the stones used in the NutriMill Harvest are not from stones. They are ceramic cardorumdum which is made from abrasive particles being glued together with adhesive. The main ingredient the adhesive is aluminum oxide. Over time the stones wear dine and the abrasives and the adhesive goes into your flour. The abrasives can wear down your teeth enamel. Dentists don’t like this about the ceramic stone mills. Nick Sorenson has written a post about this problem on his website The Fresh Loaf. I don’t think that you were aware about this when you ordered your NutriMill Harvest.

I know you’re not a doctor and I don’t know if anyone else is getting this, but when I bake a bread with Hard red or hard white or a mix of both, I eat it and this is embarrassing but I get gassy and bloated. Mary, thank you for these tips, and yes, as a beginner with home-milling, they were quite helpful. And you are a joy to watch, so don't worry that you may be talking too much, because you're not a rambler, you simply give very good information.
    The Leviticus video will be interesting. Many years ago, I came across a site that explained the reasons behind why it was healthy or not to eat certain animals - example: though a camel was hoofed, it did not sweat (I think that was the issue), so if you ate it you would be eating the toxins that built up in the meat. Also hare or rabbit was forbidden because when they eat they don't process all the nutrients, so when they release their bowel movements (sorry) they chew on certain pellets that they release and gain more of the nutrients that way - but yuck - right? Anyway, I hope my memory served me well with those examples. I just found it to be very interesting. So, now, since I may be rambling, I'll say, thank you again, and good-bye for now. Blessings, Marianne

    Mary, this weekend I started baking with freshly milled flour. I started gradually with the soft white wheat and baked muffins using part milled wheat and part (mostly) almond flour (store bought). They were so wonderful and almost like cupcakes. I sweetened with a little honey and added a light cinnamon/organic powdered sugar glaze. Today, I dove into making bread. But, I forgot to knead the dough before I put it to rise! LOL....I thought I had all my little ducks in a row, but I guess not. I gave them over to God and asked him to bless them and I had faith He would favor my endeavor and He did. I think I am a little nervous about the milling process, and as I get used to it, I'll be more at ease. They still rose quite a bit and though the loaves were smaller than they would have been and little more dense, they still tasted very good and the the texture was good too, considering. In other words, they were still quite edible and enjoyable. I made one in a baguette loaf and the other I rolled cinnamon and raisins in and put in a pan. Well, I just wanted to share my funny mistake and also my success. Thank you, again, for your inspiring videos. I've been watching your shorts, as well, and they're hilarious.
    Blessings, Marianne

Second question: I currently purchase my wheat berries from Azure Standard because they are organic, but the cost is much less than most other distributors; however, they're not sent in the mylar bags and have oxygen absorbers like Pleasant Hill grains. I know you may not want to get into endorsing and/or critiquing a company, but would you please advise on how important the packaging is to the quality of the wheat berries? Thank you!!

    Have you tried milling on the pastry setting vs the bread milling setting on the Wondermill yet for loaves of bread? Have you tried Spelt flour only for sour dough sandwich bread? and then on more question.... Have you tried Azure or Natural Grocers for wheat berries? Sorry so many questions :). thank you

      I haven't used the pastry setting yet. I have heard from others it doesn't make a big difference, though. I just recently got into using spelt so I am going to be trying out spelt sourdough and einkorn bread soon. I wish we had an azure drop off nearby, but, we live in the boonies ha ha...I don't have a lot of options for grains other than ordering them unfortunately.

      Thank you!! I store my bread in a bread bag with a clip on the counter for up to 5 days. Any extra bread I make, I put in the bread bag and put it in the freezer. When it thaws, it is just like fresh. God bless you!

      @@TheRoseHomestead Awesome... thank you so much!!💕 Oh... one more thing... I was looking at your Amazon storefront. You may want to add your grain mills and mixer. So, you get credit for them. It also makes it easier for your viewers to purchase from you. Have a blessed day and I'm looking forward to your next video!!💕💗💖

    Hello can I use yeast in these breads and how can I keep my yeast fresh?

    • @TheRoseHomestead
      @TheRoseHomestead  Před 7 měsíci

      Yes, I use yeast in almost all of my sandwich bread recipes. I keep my yeast in a mason jar in the fridge. If I buy yeast in a larger container, I put some in the jar in the fridge and the rest in an airtight container in the freezer.

    Where would a person in her 70s on a budget, would be the best place to buy the supplies to mill my own flour? Thanks!

      @TheRoseHomestead  Před měsícem

      I think the best place to buy grains would be Amazon. You can buy 5 lb bags and they aren't that expensive. The cheapest grain mill is the Nutrimill Classic. I have a 20 dollar coupon code if you want to use it. Just let me know.

    Mary, I am in the process of deciding what wheat mill to purchase. I am wondering about the Mock Mill. Wondered how you feel about it. Good review, but doesn't come up often. Is it because it is stone ground?

      I have heard wonderful things about the Mockmill. I would say it would be a great investment!

    Hi Mary
    I have bucket of grain w the airtight lid oxygen absorption etc how long will that keep
    Also I used to have a grain mill but i ruined it by trying to mill something too small like flax seeds
    Anyway I now use vita mix grain blender container
    Does that mill as fine as a grain mill??

    • @TheRoseHomestead
      @TheRoseHomestead  Před 8 měsíci +1

      The Vitamix is what I used when I first started grinding my wheat. I highly recommend you freeze the wheat berries before grinding in the vitamix as it makes the flour quite hot. You bucket of grain will keep for years as long as it is stored in a cool dry place with the lid on.

    So you mentioned soaking your flour before baking. So you mill your grain and then soak it in water? By the way, I am enjoying your videos.

    • @TheRoseHomestead
      @TheRoseHomestead  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Yes, I add the flour and water together and let it soak for a bit because it helps break down the bran and germ so you get a softer loaf. Thank you so much!

    Why don’t you use your leftover flour in bread? Isn’t it still in good shape after a week or so?

    • @TheRoseHomestead
      @TheRoseHomestead  Před 6 měsíci

      Usually, it's because it's so cold and can cause the dough to take longer to rise. I use it in muffins and pancakes where it doesn't really matter. However, I have in a pinch used it and it still works fine, just takes a little longer.
