Well done on that time. I was there. I started in block 7 so a bit ahead of you. It was my first ever marathon I chose Athens as I was likely only to do one so therefore make it a good one. It was the greatest day off my life by a long shot. I had trained for a time of 4 hours and set off at the right pace and was on target until the start of the main climb. I had done the first climb loosing a bit but pulled it back by the time i got down the hill. Then came that brutal climb luckily I new how long it would go on for but it did not stop screams of "how much more till the top?" I walked a few bits on the way down in to Athens. I guess you will remember the drums in the tunnel, what a noise. I finally finished in about 4:34. I agree with you about not fully taking in the stadium but what a day it was. I underestimated two things; The hills and the last 5 miles. I may have wanted four hours but taking in to account the hills and i'm 58 I was delighted with the result. That said I should have done way more hill training. At mile 22 I screamed to myself "never again so long as I live". Now I plan the Loch Ness Marathon www.lochnessmarathon.com next year and to return to Athens for 2021. So I backup what you say I totally recommend the Athens Authentic Marathon you will never forget it.
Congratulations! A great time for a difficult course. I love scotland. It's my favourite country in the world and loch ness is a beautiful part. You'll have a fantastic time, I here it's a really good scenic marathon. I'll be heading to scotland for a week in march to do some hiking. Very excited!
I ran this race in 2011, 2500 years after the Battel Of Marathon, and two weeks after my 60th. Like you, it was planned as the one and only marathon I would run - but I changed my mind and ran it again in 2021. I love the race, I love Athens, I love Kalimarmaro (the Panathenaic stadium), and if I can then I shall run it again in a few years' time.

Hey kiwi! Nothing penciled in yet but I have some ideas. I don't think I'll do anything about a 10k before the end of the year and then something longer in the early quarter of 2020. Watch this space!
It was an amazing finish! I was too exhausted and spaced out to appreciate it fully at the time. As you keep walking around and out to get your medal, I never really stopped and took it all in. Was a lot bigger than I was expecting though and nice to finish where the Olympics marathon finishes as well.

Well done, a very helpful video. Congrats, I would be over the moon with your finishing time. I am signed up to run Athens Marathon in Nov 2022! You made a good point in mentioning training for that longggg gradual incline. I live by a pretty wide range of hills, but it seems that will not really equate to the Athens course. How do you think is best to prepare for the Athens course? I will also be taking a racing vest (two bottles infront)... do you think a bladder in the back would be helpful, or more of a hinerance? I will be taking plenty of salt tablet on route for the inevitable cramping. Do you have any other tips that come to mind? :)
@@onemanultra8167 I trained a lot before. I finished in 3:54 but i never walked. My advices are never stop or walk during the race, drink water in every "water station", don't talk, don't filming yourself because it is a loss of energy. As for the pains....I had a massage right after the race and so i didn't have any pains. ;-)
@@Tsigarinho a bit hard not to film yourself when you have a running channel 😂 Normally I wouldn't stop and walk but due to my lack of training and the difficulty of the course, it was the more sensible option for my to finish healthy/ at all 😆. I'd like to go back and do it again in the future but more things must be tackled first! Well done on your time, under 4hrs is good for Athens I'd say!
Well done for persevering through. The end can never come soon enough when you feel like that. How come you all had to hold one hand up before the start?
Everyone does the athletes oath before the race, promising to race with honour and sportsmanship and to uphold the values of the games. It's quite a nice touch.
