He was there buying his stuff and I went for a pack of cigarettes. It was my son's 10th birthday and he was a huge Laker fan. Nick took time to sign his autograph on a receipt and I went outside to call my son on a payphone "yes this was before cellphones" and Nick came out and talked to my son on the phone. They were great seats...we're talking the Forum in Inglewood. Run down and dark outside. Kinda scary for skinny lil white kids from Orange County. The game I most remember going to was against the Charlotte Hornets when Larry Johnson and Alonzo Mourning were playing together. This was before Shaq and Penny Hardaway. 1993. We were about 12-13 rows from the floor....I remember how different it looked from the tv angles. I remember Alonzo Mourning yelling "Fuuuuck!!!" when he missed a shot. I remember buying packs of Stadium Club Basketball cards and every pack we opened had a insert card in it. It was good times. Simpler times.

Thanks for all the memories Nick and TVCC is not central Texas we are East Texas....

    One of my favorite lakers of all-time. I really feel if he kept himself straight and listened he wouldnt have to be traded. Jerry west said it was one of his toughest decisions he had to make. Trading away van exel felt like he was trading away his son. Rest is history Van Exel career was never same after Lakers. He could have been a part of the 3peat kobe shaq years. Thank goodness for the great derek fisher we quickly forgot about van exel.

After playing he told me. Fear no one make people earn your respect and take it from others. Dont let your size be a handicap. He was real to me and loved him for that. George lynch is the one got me the workout. I'm grateful

    Kenny "The Jet" Smith called Nick the most "non household name" clutch shooter/player in the modern era. Everyone on the set agreed, including the likes of Reggie Miller, Kerr, Webber and even Shaq, who is still salty after all these years. High praise from some clutch performers. One can only wonder what he could have accomplished had he stayed on the Lakers. If you look at the original 96-97 roster and compare it to the 1999-2000 roster, only Kobe and Shaq remained. They really cleaned house and Phil Jackson brought in former Magic players to help Shaq and former Bulls players to help himself and Kobe. In retrospect, it put the peddle to the metal as far as their short term playoff strength but possibly hurt their long term talent viability. Instead of competing for a title for the next seven years, they sacrificed youth for power and experience, which led to them overcompensating in 03-04 with their failed super team in an attempt to remain relevant. If they had kept Van Exel and Jones maybe even Ceballos off the bench, they could have been unstoppable for a lot longer.

      J DC U will get no disagreements from me. That sounds extremely accurate. I really didn’t want Shaq to leave Orlando in the first place, but we know how that turned out🤣. However me and my friends constantly talk about what could have been w/the Lakers. Van Exel, being one of our favorite players, is always a player mentioned in overall basketball conversations.

      That’s a terrible take. Did you not hear. Van Exel didn’t like sharing the ball with everybody else van exel said it himself. While he was really really good when you cause problems and you’re terrible in the locker room you are the one to go. The chemistry was terrible with Nick on that team.

    • @JD37
      @JD37 Před 4 lety +1

      oldman baller50
      Fortunately I know the truth about the “chemistry problem” you’re addressing. Here goes:
      Shaq was getting rid of each of the 94-95 Lakers, one by one, starting with All Star Ceballos because he didn’t want someone taking shots away from him. He preferred Fisher to Van Exel because it was clearly Van Exel’s team when Shaq arrived and he knew that Fisher was younger and less of a conductor and would be more likely to allow himself to be groomed and be deferential overall, which he was. Then, the brass asked Nick, who was coming off an injury as well as his first All Star appearance, to “help” Fisher and his fragile confidence by coming off the bench for them. Nick said “whatever the team needs”. They then leaked to the press that Nick asked to be benched and “didn’t want to lead.” If Social Media existed back then, Nick would have survived and they all would have looked like jerks. But it was 1998 so it happened. Finally, they got rid of Eddie, which Shaq didn’t want (he actually preferred Eddie over Kobe for ten minutes). As far as Nick, Jerry West says he regrets so much what he did, what he allowed to happen and how he treated Nick, that he will take that decision with him to the grave. When you say “the chemistry was bad” were you referring to that series of events? Because I actually got to watch them play, often live at the old Forum, and I gotta tell ya, their chemistry was great. They played like a more athletic Warriors team. Five guys. One mind. It was amazing. It’s no surprise that Van Exel holds the second most assists in a Lakers game at 23, only bested by Magic himself. Surely you saw them play, right? If not, if you are unaware of Van Exel’s career, I would suggest viewing some games from the 95 playoffs, the 98 playoff vs. the Sonics (that was the year in question I think) and the 2003 playoffs vs. the Kings, where he became the second greatest off the bench scorer in NBA playoff history. Have a great New Year and a healthy new decade.
