My son was diagnosed with severe apraxia at the age of three. At that age he could speak just 5 words correctly and consistently. We were terrified for his future. He's 14 now, has had many years of speech therapy. He still struggles with the motor planning. Some people after they meet him for the first time tell us they thought he just wasn't a native english speaker. I remember a few years after his diagnosis that he went through a stuttering phase. He was progressing with his therapy and his brain was working things out. Now, he won't say anything until he knows he can say all parts of the word and sentence correctly. In other words, he's fairly slow (but getting faster all the time) and deliberate in his speech. He makes sure to pronounce those consonants and that everyone can understand him. I think people think he's not a native english speaker at first because he's almost too perfect, like you can hear how much he's trying to work things out and not mess up. I would be the same way, for instance, if I was trying to speak french and having to work out all of the unfamiliar sounds, not wanting to get it wrong. Sometimes we laugh with him about how he speaks more clearly than we do. He thinks our speech is sloppy. He'll call me out when I drop a T or N for example.
Biggest thing I have done is encourage my son's strengths. He is great at cooking and loves it. That would be a wonderful field for him and doesn't require a lot of verbal communication.
My daughter loves my little pony she can express attitudes let you know when your wrong great motor skill but cannot talk to save her life. We hired a speech therapist and she mentioned apraxia disorder and it seems like this is what she is suffering from
My daughter is 31 and has aprexia. She's a great artist, but her speech is still affected. She was in speech from time she was two to the time she graduated high school. She was also in learning disabilities class. She has her strengths and I that is what I look at.
My son just turned 4 in June. He can watch a tv show and say it word for word in his own language, in tune and all. Not a single proper word tho. He can spell, draw in detail etc. Ethan the heck.
Yup mine is 2, he can count to 20, say many colours, shapes and mimic TV but cant talk organically. I m struggling with everything with him its like 2 steps forwards 3 steps back
How would we know if it’s apraxia or any other speech conditions? Our daughter has level 3 autism and speech delay… She is now 6 and has only a few words that she can say when we prompt her… How would we know if it’s apraxia? She is in speech but we haven’t had that discussion yet. How long does it take to know? Just wondering if we are wasting our time? Can someone help me understand what’s going on with my child?
This is exactly how I feel about my child. My son is 3 and completely non verbal. He understands most things but just doesn’t talk. He’s also in speech therapy but hasn’t made any verbal improvements. I honestly don’t understand what’s going on with my child and no one can tell me why he doesn’t talk or will he ever talk.
@@tiffanieesharese9239 I wish we had better resources when it comes to this. For exemple, is a speech pathologist is what she needs? Or should we look for higher expertise experts for such issues. I’m not questioning what our speech therapist but I do not want to wait longer then I have… I need answers now so we can start working on our issues.
We have same my boy is 3 years now and he doesnt speak yet. You guys wanna create a online group where we can share some ideas that maybe can improve the daily routine of our kids? Anything let me know best regards.
@@tiffanieesharese9239 mine is level 2 ASD and is three years old and he is very intelligent, has speech delay, and does understand most things I’m telling him. It’s just the expressive
same ! by boy will be 4 next month and is non verbal has been in speech therapy for about 2 years and has made very little progress (as far as saying words). he’s also on the waiting list to be evaluated for ASD… but not until feb 2023. covid really pushed things back for us in my state 🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️ but when he tries to pronounce certain words it sounds a little funny, but he tries lol it’s cute listening to him! i try not to get discouraged but it’s hard at times! stay strong mamas!!! 👏🏾🙌🏾❤️

Thank you for sharing your experience. I found it very comforting - your son sounds amazing!

What a wonderful testimony !!! It empowers.

Same with mine. He can read some books but won't actually speak to initiate conversation.
