    2015 Future of StoryTelling Summit Speaker: Jamie Gutfreund
    CMO, Cassandra Report
    Deep Focus
    Through her work on the Cassandra Report and extensive experience in digital content and commerce, Jamie Gutfreund has drawn up a full personality profile for the people who will soon be ruling the world: Generation Z. Maturing in a post-9/11 world amid a challenging economy, violent news stories, and a chaotic media environment, Generation Z looks not for perfection but for authenticity. Trends that the rest of us are still adjusting to are embedded in Generation Z’s DNA-from a constant connection to a global world to the 24/7 coverage of social media. If Generation Z can seem like a puzzle, Gutfreund has cracked the solution-and she’s come to share Gen Z’s passion in the process.

    It's good to see an adult not caught up in the centuries old notion of "the new generation sucks." Every single time, they always sound like their saying something profound too. As if the previous generation didn't think the current was competent and so fourth.

    I hope Gen Z will see all the bullshit behind celebrity culture and materialism as they approach their 20s. They need a counter culture like the one in the 1960s.

    "They don't want happy endings. They want realistic stories".
    Well, as a storyteller, I'm kind of a fairy tale specialist. So there's a whole generation I've lost as an audience.

      Not to fear my friend. I honestly don't believe this video to be 100% accurate. I'm apart of gen z and I grew up watching Disney, reading grimms fairy tales, and basically every happy ending story. We(or at least I) love to have realistic-like characters (ones that I can relate to) and make them have happy endings. It's alright to have fairy tales, it's what teaches kids the fundamentals and expectations of perfection, and let them decide how to twist up that concept into their own definition of perfect.

      +Adam Hoffman As a fairy tale specialist, you should know many fairy tales end in tragedy. So...

      Andersen's do, but I'm not an Andersen fan. Despite the whole "fairy tales are really so dark" trend, the truth is that most fairy tales still have happy endings. It's just that people's definitions of happy endings is different. For example, people have a problem these days with stories that end with the punishment of the villain. They don't think that's "happy". But it is, because the hero or heroine still turns out okay. The villain shouldn't be happy, they're the villain. The truth is that the dark parts of fairy tales happen either at the beginning or in the middle. They're stories of transformation as someone with a crappy life goes on to have a better one by the end.

    • @ziloe
      @ziloe Před 8 lety

      Unless you consider things like the Little Mermaid, where she kills herself, or the rape of Sleeping Beauty. You know, just every day happy endings.

    • @AdamYJ
      @AdamYJ Před 8 lety

      The Little Mermaid technically isn't a fairy tale, it's a short story by H.C. Andersen. But for some reason people consider his original tales to be fairy tales even when they're not. The fairy tales he transcribed were stories like "The Wild Swans", most of which have variants elsewhere (in this case, in the Grimms' book as "Twelve Brothers"). And the scene you're talking about from Basile's "Sun, Moon and Talia" isn't an ending, it's a middle. And in the rest of the story, Talia marries the man who assaults her and nearly gets eaten by her mother-in-law who is then punished. And the story more-or-less treats the whole thing as a positive. Probably because it comes from a time when women were essentially considered chattel and marrying a man of status was considered universally good. We just can't accept that as happy now with our modern sensibilities. But that's why the story changed over time and became what it is under Perrault and Grimm. People get so hung up on the idea of "original" fairy tales when seeking for the original and the authentic is a fool's errand when dealing with folk tales. The tales change and flow like water in a river. Looking to the history of fairy tales shouldn't be about finding something more authentic but about acknowledging the changes the story has made over time.

    I was born in late '98 and I've seen both the worst of millennials and the best of gen Z in me. Growing up, I always leaned towards those older than me so I could learn from them, but I realized their world isn't mine at all: I'm a self-imposed vegetarian since 14 for feeling dumb about eating dead animals, but not a vegan since it feels too extreme and I honestly enjoy dairy. Digging avocado toast before it was even a thing, even though it's just like any another meal and I don't feel the urge to take pictures of it and post 'em everywhere. I'm all about equality and justice really, but the whole SJW thing and antifa lunatics are nothing but pathetic. Politically, I'm center-right and almost all millennials think we're crazy nazis when they hear the word "right". When it comes to our differences my hope is be able to build a common future where everyone has their space to feel comfortable in. No special treatments but no discrimination whatsoever either - why they won't see things this way simply beats me.

    • @ScaryWombat
      @ScaryWombat Před 5 lety

      Wait... So you openly hate 'SJW's, but share the same goals?
      You realise that the only equality that we have only exists because of people who faught for it, right? No great change was made by people who just wished for a happier tomorrow.

    Actually I beg to argue that a majority of Gen Z grew up with economic success,after Obama took office in 2008 the economy started rising.Under obama the economy was actually quite well.Since Gen Z is 1997-2010 I would argue that only people born 1997-2001 would remember Post recession well enough to feel it's affects.
