  • Searching for old places & cellar holes deep in the woods of New England . I walked many miles today through the deserted farmlands that once covered this are. There were homes and farms out here in the late 1600s,1700s and most were abandoned in the 1800s. I took my Fisher F19 and followed rock walls, cart paths and checked every hole in the ground. It all comes down to the landscape history and reading the land that leads me where it does. I found the signs of where people dug granite out of the ground and split it, I found a cistern and finally a cellar hole. Did some relic hunting and found something nice from the 1700s. A lot of hiking and exploring in this one but it must be done. I was flying blind today with no map, directions or goal. Just go hike, explore and see what we find.

    You should watch the video called below the plains and watch how he finds where out houses were and digs into them to find 130 year old bottles

    That may have been a spring house. That would account for the rocks and nails were probably from an enclosure.

    I wonder if you tag each find with a GPS location so that a report can be printed out showing clusters of finds? I bet that your local college's archeology department would love that!

    At Warren Pond in southern Maine there is a small little well that looks like that. No idea how old it is, but the area has these massive stone cliffs in the woods and huge boulders around. Every time I go there I feel there must have been some serious Native American and Settler history there that is now gone. It’s a great spot.

      I know that pond. 6 min drive from my house, but I never thought to detect it. I have detected all around Mt Aggie tho

    What is a tom back button? What makes it a tom back?

    • @metaldetectingthenortheast1294
      @metaldetectingthenortheast1294 Před 16 dny +3

      It refers to the metal alloy of copper and zinc with some added metals for color like lead, tin , arsenic. It has a higher copper content. Seen it spelled tombac.

    More evidence of the year with no summer... people fled for temp improvement.
    No worries, no where to flee towards with next calorie shortfall.
    Except where there are less people... in New Hampshire !

    Do you stick limbs or small tree trunks into those wells you find, so animals can crawl out if they fall in?

      Pick them off. As long as you find them within 12 to 24 hours there's very little concern unless from a Lonestar.
