When NBN installed my fibre I asked them to put the indoor box in my hallway cupboard roughly 20m away from the outdoor box. The installer advised that it would require extra conduit which wasn’t included in a standard install but it was no problem and I could either supply the conduit myself or he would invoice me separately for it. He showed me the conduit on the Bunnings website and it cost me like $24. He installed it at no extra charge.
These lads have millions of houses to connect and they get paid a flat rate per job, you can’t expect them to go above and beyond what the customer has agreed to on every job. If you want the job done better then mandate or incentivise it. Pay the installers who are out there doing the work instead of paying millions in bonuses to executives that sit in the aircon all day doing f all.

I had mine finally installed a few weeks ago. It was one joke after another for the last 6months. First the contractor pulling the draw wire in the street snap the rope and left it. Didn't report the issue even after I pulled him up on it. Then we had a few pits replaced in the street and they didn't fix any broken conduits between the pits. So once they finally came to pull the fibre it took three attempts. Then I watched them install the cable to and from the NTD and they were trying to bend the cable beyond the min bend radius, and I had to argue with them and explain you can't bend the fibre like that. They refused to listen so I have little faith in them doing a decent job. It's funny even when you layout everything for them, all conduits from the pit to my home office they still manage to do stupid things. There is no one inspecting thier work so they will keep doing whatever they want.

Yeah i work in IT every day & when they guy came to upgrade my connection to the hosue . I did ask him if the connection could be put where the old connection was . However he was right that was a bad place in the first place being in the Kitchen . Also that would have ment cabling up the outside wall in through the roof & back down the wall in the other room . Which fair enough would have taken him the day & as you said they don't get paid by time rather by install . So the issue is really with the NBN not the contrator . They should really pay by the time, that way everyone would get the install as they want it . However having said that. If they did pay by time some contrators might take advanage of that, only doing one install a day . So i guess your damed if you do & damed if you don't .

When the NBN guy came to install my FTTH he initally planned to install the box in the master bedroom which was the closest point and would've been a totally useless and very inconvenient spot for me. I kindly asked the polite young man (of Indian appearance) to install it in my study on the opposite side of the house where my previous phone line and broadband used to be. He hesitated for a moment, but said he would try if not too difficult. He ended up running the fibre up to the roof cavity, across the entire front of the house and down the wall to the study and mounted it in the perfect spot and height.
I think people need to just think about things and be polite, but also don't accept subpar service. This is obvoiusly tough for the elderly to understand sometimes. When my elderly mum had her's connected, I made sure I took the day off so I could be there for the install. That also went to plan and got pulled through to where the old phone and phone point was in the dinning area where she preferred it.
It can be a bit of a pain, but much easier if you get it done right the first time.
Just be polite and explain the reason you want it where you want it. They will try to do it if they can, otherwise, I recommend postponing the install and asking for another installer.

got our HFC NTD replaced after a thunderstorm killed it, I was at work and parents were home. Installer asked where the router was, went to my study saw my ubiquiti setup in a 48u rack and said "not my problem from here" and left. lmao

@4:30 seen them install in a shower / bathroom so does not surprise me (tiled room with a curtain rail separating like you see at the parks etc but literally placed where the shower is .. ) but about to go through this with them soon they only want to put it where the original tel cable comes in where their is no power points , I even dug out a trench from where the telstra cable came in down to another location they could come up the wall through the ceiling but nope only want to run it where the Telstra cable came in , mean while instead of running the fibre down OUR side of the block they dug up the road to run it across the road 70m from the neighbors connection

Problem is NBN only pay sub contractor 84.00 for the installation. That’s why it’s always rushed and done roughly.

i wanted my FTTP upgrade done but Telstra would not do it as i don't a drivers licence or passport for ID checks and i don't intend getting either of them i only have Proof Of Age card and medicare card for ID how can i make Telstra put the order in to have it go ahead? As i'm sick of FTTN it's constantly unstable and everything buffers regardless of the time of day and has gotten worse over the past 2 weeks and they canceled my request to have FTTP

My house was cabled with fibre in the early learning days back in 2013 (we bought it during COVID so it was already setup). It's very much like the video here except the fibre and power is tagged above the skirting board of a bedroom , punches through the wall into the living room, and a power board was stuck on that end to power the NBN gear. It looks damn terrible. Then there's all the old tech left behind still, phone lines and ports, plus both Optus and Telstra cable in and out of conduits all over the place. I'm very close to ripping it all out, just wish I knew if I was allowed to...

I can't begin to remember the number of new houses I've seen where the fibre comes in on one side and the termination box is in the middle of a wall that is totally on the opposite side of the house. There is just now way that was the closest point from the pitt.
Wasn't it "a thing" in the old landline days that they had to put the ph point some where close to the street where the pit is? You could ask for it to go somewhere else. But it had to comply... you could get more points but they would charge you. I'm from Queensland I know this is the case with power. There are rules how far inside a property they will go before you need a Mains Switch Box for example. ;)

I expect the nbn techs are going to want to install the fibre equipment where my current Madison box is installed. The problems are that: 1) the maddison box is directly below the meter box, so the wall cavity has heaps of electrical cabling and conduits right where they're going to want to drill through to the internal wall, and 2) there's no power point on the internal wall anywhere near that location.
Hopefully the techs will at least convert the existing Cat5e being used for the phone line into an RJ45 port on the internal wall next to the fibre box. I guess we'll see in late 2024/early 2025 when my house is due to have fttp upgrades available.

The upgrade to NBN is now done the same day. The NBN installers might not have the upgraded training. The upgrade to NBN should not have gone forward until a powerpoint is installed.

I had the NBN out yesterday to install my fibre, technician went through the equipment he was installing, when installing the fibre box in the house and the external connection point he brought an app up on his phone, typed the a statement about the agreed locations of the unit and had me sign onto his phone. With photos attached.
My only other issue was the pit outside my house had been replaced 3 months ago and conduit in blocked and now part of my driveway need to be taken up to run the fibre from the pit to the house. Most likely the issue is a 20mm conduit in the pit and a 10mm conduit on the house, possibly didn’t use correct connectors when installing, common problem I was told with older properties.

Yep, they took the lazy way with my old place and it didn't matter how msny complaints were made, they did nothing. Still has cords wrapped around walls. The installer only would use original phone connection to home and not the cable internet that was in a more suitable location. Useless. Oh yes, he also had to get to his next booking asap

10 years ago when I had FTTP installed they said wanted to put the NBN connection on the side of the house closest to the pit and I had to say no, connect it to the other side of the house and they just left and said they would have to come back because they didn't bring cable. Then they came back and refused to install it because there wasn't a powerpoint there, told me to get one installed and make another appointment. They were adament they would not install it anywhere but next to a powerpoint, which is the right thing to do. No idea why that didn't happen here. They are definitely responsible for relocating the phone line etc... that's crazy.

    • @knifeyonline
      @knifeyonline Před 6 měsíci

6:38 running it through the roof, and running it down a cavity does not count as special access work. This goes for point 2 as well, it doesn't have to be on an outside wall but it's usually the one that has an easily accessible cavity, that's what they are after. It definitely does not have to be where the old line enters the house, they actually have a cable limit to use from that point to where you want it installed (unless something has changed). You don't have to have it installed exactly where they say, don't let them bully you into that because it's easier for them.
