    Ray, I have the same setup with the extended tongue, however what I did was instead of bolts for the ball coupler and the rear bracket on the front cross member I used Pins that I can remove and pull my 2" square Aluminum tube out and that lets me fold up the trailer.

      Could I by chance see that was wondering about adding a 5ft steel tube to extend length but didn't want to weld was thinking of adjustable one that can slide in and out of the square are under the coupler. And bolt it on there.

    NICE! I have a 13ft, 75lb fishing kayak. This setup would be perfect so I don't have to put the kayak on top of my minivan, the problem is I don't have the skills necessary to do something like this. Awesome vid by the way.

    I'm curious if you still use it as it was or if you modified it again. I see how you can restore the tilt feature, and I was concerned about the front leg attachment. Hope there have been no issues.

    Hello, looks like a fairly complex build given I may not have the tools and skills to pull this off. I saw one more video that someone put a few bunks that is about 10 feet long. What do you think are the disadvantage of having such a long bunk on the trailer ? Thanks

    What thickness is that Square steel tubing that you are using for trailer tongue extension? I am doing the same on my trailer. Thanks! Awesome job by the way.

      Thank glad you liked it. i think the tube is 2"x2" and the wall is 3/16"

      @logmeindangit Před 3 lety

      @@RayMAKES - I built a motorcycle carrier for my 2" square receiver, and when selecting materials, I tested the thinnest sq. tube I dared, by "borrowing" a 6' length at the steel seller's parking lot, sticking it in the hitch receiver, then standing on the furthest end to see what 200 lbs. would do. It didn't flex or bend when I did that, so I jumped up and down on it, and it still didn't seem affected by my weight. Since I was putting the 280-lb. motorcycle track sideways on it at only about 2-3' out from the receiver, I knew it would be able to take the bike's load easily. The tube had a 1/8" wall. With this "gut-level engineering" in mind, I think your choice of 3/16" wall tubing, 50% thicker than mine, was the correct choice for your extension: the lightest weight while still being plenty strong for the load. I might have gone with 1/8", since yours would see even less load than mine (yours would only have the cantilevered tongue weight on it, which I am guessing would be no more than 40lbs. give or take, but hey - safety first, when doing your own modifications, right? 😎
      For the axle U-channel, I know you considered making a square tube replacement, but decided to leave it alone for now, seeing as how it will likely be fine as-is with your boat as the load. My biggest concern would be that the axles are too short for my liking, with the inboard bolts under tensile loads that vary and get worked with each bounce.
      Lastly, I would like to compliment you on the video and editing, fast forwarding at the right places, and the great explanations you gave the viewers. Good job, sir!
      I watched tyour assemble and modification videos primarily thinking about building a simple 250-lb. camper onto it. That would be a challenge, keeping the whole thing under 500 lbs. total, but I may be able to select materials that could help me achieve that goal, with perhaps a low profile when towing, and a pop-up when parked. It would be for a small sedan I drive that gets great mpg, and but is only rated to tow 500 lbs. max.
      Final note: I hope you made sure to set up the boat to give the trailer adequate tongue weight, as it adds tracking stability to a trailer when there is more weight in front of the wheels than behind them. There's a nice little video with a model car and trailer on a "treadmill" type belt that shows how correct tongue weight is so important to prevent trailer whip.
      Peace, and happy boating!

    Interesting, I would love to see the faces on our registration authority in Melbourne and the cost of an engineer’s certificate to get registration as a result. Cheaper to buy the boat trailer. I cannot believe you didn’t factor in the non-tilt issue. As I say interesting. Cheers 🇦🇺👍🍺🍺🍺

  • @notcharles
    @notcharles Před 3 lety +2

    I thought that,, if you used two pieces of square tube for the tongue extension you could telescope one piece inside the other so as to allow shortening the trailer, and by replacing that red piece with a piece of channel iron (2.5w x 2.5h x 5 L) the larger tube would fit (snugly) into, you could revive the tilting option. a 5/8" hole through the channel iron and both sections of SQ tube at the extended length and one through the larger SQ Tube at the collapsed position would allow the trailer to tilt again (when the pin was removed as well as shorten/lengthen the trailer at Will (or Ray). Now, as it stands, replacing that red thing with a piece of SQ Tube the extension piece would SLIDE in/out of and hinging the extension where it is presently fastened to the first cross member would allow you to tilt the trailer as well. And, in that variation, having the forward piece of the extension slide back over the smaller section (attached to the hinge at the frame) you could allow for varying the amount of extension.
    By the way - nice looking boat! Given the effort and cost to build that boat, why skimp on it's supporting equipment! I thought. Then, I checked trailer prices. It's been over ten years since i last bought a (14') boat trailer. Inflation - its robbing us blind!

    Does this boat trailer work like most boat trailers? Where you back it into the water down a ramp to launch and recover boat. If so you may need to upgrade a few things for water submertion like the lights, the wheel bearings, the hardware, the wheels, the frame etc. But the rest should be ok. :)

    • @RayMAKES
      @RayMAKES  Před 7 lety

      i'm not sure how much of it i will get in the water, the boat is so light i may be able to get away with getting it close and pushing it off/pulling it on. this is just a little river boat...and the river is only 2 blocks away. once i get it in the water the first time i will have a better idea of the weak points.

    • @dwightstewart7181
      @dwightstewart7181 Před 5 lety

      Cliff .. I just sealed (liquid gasket) the lights that came with the trailer, which works okay for the few moments it's actually in the water. Use marine grease on the wheel bearings just like regular boat trailers use. Wouldn't recommend this trailer for salt water (rust), but it's just fine for fresh water (lakes, rivers, etc).

    Hi, I have a legitimate question, I am not trying to be smart, Why did you use the magnetic drill to drop through the frame in the front of the trailer, seemed like a lot of set up time, and looked to me like I could have done it with a battery powered drop, how thick is the frame, 3mm wall thickness, I could see it flexing as you drilled it. Cheers for the reply.

    • @RayMAKES

    Love your videos man! I have a request and I know you probably don't have time to make one but I want to build a 4ft x 2ft x 2ft enclosure for my snakes with sliding glass doors on the front. I know you don't do these types of videos but since your really good at building projects, I thought I'd ask. I can't find a good video on CZcams to teach me but if you can do it, that'll be awesome and if you can't, either way I still love your videos (:

      thanks!! i actually built a custom enclosure years ago...for my African
      ball python. i don't have the snake anymore but the enclosure was all
      plexigalss, with multiple levels. i had a flip top on it but she would
      go all over the enclosure. it was 4' long 2' tall and 18" wide. when
      she started getting big and after winter hibernation, she became a
      little aggressive so i would drop a mouse on one level and another one
      on another level and she would eat them at her own pace

    Instead of all the effort of modifying the trailer tongue, why not just buy a two-foot *hitch receiver extension* for your vehicle? Extensions available up to about 4-ft long. Exact same benefit (boat further forward, etc) without the hassle. Mounted my winch on that receiver extension, which all folds and sits on the trailer tongue between use.

      Ray .. Stumbled across hitch extensions while pondering a way to extend the trailer tongue for my 12.5' inflatable. After a bit of research, seemed the obvious solution. Reduces how much tongue weight the truck's receiver can support, but these small boat/trailer combos don't even approach that. Anyway, did enjoy watching the effort put into your solution. By the way, my trailer still tilts. ;)
