  • In 1975, a year before IMS opened, the center’s founders led their first three-month retreat for a small group of some 35 people in Bucksport, Maine. Despite the retreat’s considerable demand of time and commitment, this extended retreat went so well, and generated so much interest and enthusiasm, that when IMS opened its doors a year later, the founders built the Three-Month Retreat into IMS’s yearly retreat schedule-and it’s been a staple ever since.
Here, IMS co-founder Joseph discusses the origins of the Three-Month, what many consider the “crown jewel” of IMS’s retreats, tracing it to the founders’ experiences in Asia in the late 1960s and early 1970s, when they would meditate intensively for extended periods ranging from three to five months. Their experiences in Asia were so powerful and transformative, Joseph says, “that we thought, “Wouldn't it be great if we could create a situation where people could have similar experiences, practicing for an intensive three-month period?”
“I’m not aware of other places, outside of monasteries, that offer such extended periods of intensive meditation practice,” Joseph says. “This was a new vision that allowed lay people, who are committed enough to the dharma practice, to take three months out of their lives in the world to go really deep.”
