- Episode 69 - Nice. On this episode of Let's Read, I'm joined by Coury from My Life in Gaming as we check out the first issue of Sega Visions, from June and July of 1990. Sega Visions was started by Sega of America as a competitor to Nintendo Power, and was an evolution of earlier SoA newsletters.
This issue features a lot of awesome Master System and Genesis titles, including The Revenge of Shinobi, Golden Axe, California Games, Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle, Truxton, Michael Jackson's Moonwalker, Ghostbusters, and more!
As if anyone doesn't know who Coury is, My Life in Gaming is in my opinion the best retrogaming channel on CZcams. Check it out here: / mylifeingaming Big thanks to Coury for joining me for this episode!
Show Notes:
- This is the first traditional episode of Let's Read to feature a guest, although Coury and I did do a Let's Read in front of a live audience at Retro World Expo 2019.
- Be sure to stick around after the end credits for some bonus material, including a special cameo appearance!
- Footage for this episode was recorded on real hardware, a Mega SG, and a MiSTer. Just depends on the game. I already had a lot of the footage on-hand, because the games were already covered on previous episodes.
- My second camera (the one pointed at me) stopped recording part way through the process, and it took me probably 30 mins to notice. I tried to add enough of aa variety of visual material there so that it isn't too noticeable. The footage is also soft because I had the lens opened up to its maximum aperture, whereas I usually back it off by 2 stops.
- Almost all of the information and box art used in this episode came from SegaRetro.org which should be anyone's one-stop shop for Sega knowledge.
- The intro for this video is more in-line with other recent releases on the channel. I think it looks a little bit nicer than the simple ones that I was doing for previous episodes of Let's Read, and it also hopefully sucks in the viewer a little bit more.

Lastly, ICYMI I just uploaded a pretty lengthy video all about the Astro City cabinet you see in the background of this video. Check it out here: czcams.com/video/zn8-Q7f-MqM/video.html
You should do the launch of the Neo Geo even if it's a short or padded out video.
Okay enough is enough. The Closing Music makes me gulliver shat endorphins all over my dopamine receptors. It takes me to a fabulous place where any and indeed EVERYTHING is not only possible but happening as well. Next to Lisa converting Homer's unintelligible noises to "Transcendental", I posit this music to "¡Mmmmatsgood!".
Discuss. SHOW YOUR WORK!

Just.... !!!!!MMMMMMMMMATSGOOD¡¡¡¡¡

@Frank Garrett I highly disagree! However I am happy that you are allowed to retort with your discourse. Mmmmatsgood!

Yep. That's exactly where I got my After Burner poster. And Power Strike.
It s great to see how much of my favourite youtube channels see or have seen each other, or even collab!
I hope you have a great day joe, and thanks, yours is one of the few channels that I cant wait to see a video when its uploaded.
bRING BACK jOE!!!
There's nothing better than a video where three of my subs all come together. Thanks for making the cameo. ;)
@@yomismo89 They should, like, form a metal band.
Or maybe chip-bit with plenty of REVERB!!!
I LOVE YOU JOE !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Wow! The best “Let’s Read” ever!! Cory and you have such great chemistry doing these type of videos, please do more!
I still have all my Sega Visions. Haven't looked at these on forever. Wish I kept all my Gamepros!
I still got almost all mi EGM, GAMEPRO, DIEHARDGAMEFAN, some isues of MEGAPLAY & some issues of VIDEOGAMES & COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT...
I look & read them from time to time just to remind me of those late 80's early 90's days of the 16bit arcade & console gaming & to loose my self one weekend... Its my magazine treasures😇
@@jorgecuelar3391 that is exactly why I wish I still had all mine. Would love go read them again.
At 25:12 you’re talking about me that you say ‘sucking up to SEGA’! You missed the important point to realise that SEGA Visions was a North American magazine by SEGA of America. This publication never came to Australia however this Aussie was able to get his name in it! SEGA Fan for life, yep that’s me! I’d written to SEGA of America as their address was located at the bottom of the Genesis advertisements in EGM. I recall writing to SEGA as I was a Master System owner and excited for the Mega Drive and was hoping to know when it would be released in Australia. They did edit my letter but I didn’t care too much. Who would have thought 30 years later I’d be reminded of my letter to SEGA! Thanks guys!
Awesome story mate.
as a kid I LOVED SEGA Visions
My buddy had a subscription to this and I had Nintendo power. We would share the magazines. Thanks for this great episode and memories.
Thanks for this! Your let’s reads have gotten me through some times of the quarantine! Always a great job!
I'm TOTALLY cool w/ you two or another guest doing a Let's Read again. It's good to hear about other's experiences w/ Retro consoles and games growing up. Great Episode!
you have to DO MORE of these Let's read WITH Coury ASAP !!! amazing , best episode ever !
That story about making friends with the sega hint line was super cool! Sounds like a fun time as a kid
I had Nintendo power and Sega visions. This brings back alot of good memories of taking these magazines to school and looking at games we wanted with my friends.
Sega Visions was a free magazine. My brother and I both had a subscription to it back in the day, and I still have all my copies.
oh boy, this is gonna be a banger!
Damn, I remember buying this issue as a kid, and I remember when I threw it away with all my other gaming mags in the late 90s. I truly regret not keeping all of them
I remade my old 80s room in the basement of my house... Nostalgia Is My Drug Of Choice.
@The Old Bad Gamer lmao. I have 80s and 90s gaming posters all over lots of felt banners and a big GIJoe poster ..
Thank you so much for making these videos!👍
Awesome collaboration!! The audio and video editing is really good. Came together really well!
Thanks man!!
Loved this episode! Great having the back and forth with Coury.
Can’t believe I missed this video!! Loved every second of this. Especially the Bonus End Credit Scene!! Lol
I miss your Live shows!!!!!!
i remember december 31 1989, people were for sure sad the 80s were ending. It was bittersweet. Holy crap how the time has flown.
The 90’s ended up being pretty good too though.
Awesome video! Thank you both for sharing your memories and experiences. Looking forward to the next one!
This channel is so professional, honestly.
CGQ always love playing these let's read vids on my headphones while at 12hr +shift! Reminiscing the childhood!
Awesome, man!
Really great episode. I had this issue as kid, and loved all of the anecdotal commentary.
This guy is one of the best in the business! Love the videos don’t stop!
Finally getting around to viewing this one. Thanks for all you do CGQ Chris
This channel is just an all around wholesome, informative and relaxing place on the internet. By far, the best gaming channel on youtube :)
It's good but Game Sack is the king.
Oh, I've been reading old issues of gaming magazines this summer and recently came across the Game Doctor's column when he came to EGM.
I like how much fun Chris had with this. It’s edited with love and you feel it
It was fun to read read through these magazines with you guys, definitely like this format
I am hooked on your videos !!! Like I can’t stop watching them they so detailed and well structured piece by piece thank you
I enjoyed this video because it was both you and Coury discussing the mag. I think adding a third person would make future readings even more fun and interesting. Thanks for sharing.
This was a really fun video to watch. Really enjoyed how you guys played it off like you were in the same room and hearing your combined perspectives on the sega history here.
i love that you have so many of these
Yah, this was great to have another person with knowledge of the subject read the magazine with you. Back in the day we would often read magazines with a buddy as we were playing or dreaming of what we would be playing in the future.
Keep up the great work, bud! Thanks for the new video!
Having those letters is amazing, keeps the memories alive.
This is one of the best videos! So great. Loved the conversation and cameo from Game Sack Joe! Keep up the great work!
There was a Time-Out in New Jersey (Freehold Raceway Mall) that I used to visit all the time between 1994-2002 and then it was gone. Lots of memories there. I'm 36.
Great video from 3yr ago. After moving from Jersey City to my current city back in 1989 it was surprising to see a Toys for Joy shop that rented out master system games. It was short lived as they would eventually go out of business.
Thank you, man for what you are doing!
We had a Time Outs at my mall growing up: Marketplace Mall in Henrietta, NY. It was definitely not a "Sega Time Out," but just a regular one. It was a really basic arcade with cabinets and ticket redemption and not much more. We definitely didn't have any cool space age features.
Also, I spent tens, if not hundreds, of dollars playing SF2 and Super SF2 in that arcade.
had them in connecticut as well fun times
Only way today could have been better is if it was Friday!
I agree! Best let’s read ever. Thank you Chris and Coury for bringing back memories from my gaming childhood.
Great episode. You and Coury have a great rapport!
Oh heck yeah! Just getting back into Classic Consoles, my Mega Everdrive Pro is already on it's way! This is awesome. Two of my favourite CZcamsrs teaming up!
What is a pro?? How much we talking?? I found the Genesis 3 on the side of the road in a bag with the controllers wires and everything but it works perfectly good. Had to clean up a little bit it was just dusty. Evidently somebody was getting evicted I guess, but it's rather ugly. I got one of those ever drives or whatever you call it but it's the kind of pain in the butt to use. You got to turn the thing off to reset the game or maybe I'm just doing it wrong. I was going to order one of them RCA jacks to HDMI. Will that work for this do you know, and will it look good on a flat screen TV??
I’m really kicking myself right now. I had both SEGA Challenge and Visions. I kept those magazine for years because I wanted my kids to know what gaming was like back then. However since I live overseas now and those magazines were in storage back in U.S.A. So On a visit a few years ago I threw them away.
I had no idea how popular retro gaming was until a couple years ago. If I knew SEGA Visions was going $50 a pop on eBay I would have kept them and sold them.
SEGA's Time Out was the arcade at my local mall as a kid. There was a standalone Aladdin's Castle up the road, but the Time Out was way more accessible on foot (or bike), since the mall was closer, but man, I have a lot of memories tied up in Time Out.
excellent series. pls make more!
I agree. This was great. Kudos. Team up more often.
Hey Chris and Coury, great video. Time-Out had a location here in Manchester Connecticut at the Buckland Hills Mall. It very much had a darker aesthetic and sported all of the latest titles. They also had a prize counter for some ticket type games. Sadly, they closed it back in the mid 2000s and put up a carousel.
had one in milford mall as well , used to close near 11pm i walk down the boston post road to another arcade that closed at 3 am
blake bortles I’ve been to that mall. They have a pretty cool retro game store, I think it’s ‘2nd level’ or ‘next level’ games. They must have had locations all over CT. Definitely not the Sega versioning the arcade though for sure.
I subscribed and had this first issue as well as a kid. I think i kept getting sega visions well into 1995 towards the tail end of the genesis’ run.
Very nice.
"smoke trails," are what makes shooters cool. I remember how cool Warhawk and Panzer Dragoon looked because of their swarm missiles.
There was a Child World in the shopping center where I used to live and I remember seeing Sega Master System games for sale when I walked through it.
We had a time out in Cary NC. Did not know it was associated with Sega. Spent a lot of time there in the late 80s. I remember only time I ever saw a Sega Master system. I recall it was an award for the ticket games. Makes sense now if time out was associated with Sega.
Alright! A new let's read episode, that didn't show up on my sub box, thanks CZcams. And now randomly recommended it to me.
Dang, those original Sega magazines before Sega Visions looked so cool. Always a fan of that era Sega logo and grid background.
Omg had this when I was 10. Man I feel old!
In Puerto Rico we first had the Time Out, then it was Sega's Time Out and last, Namco Time Out. We had 2 of them in the island. Great Times.
This is a super great video, because Corey owned the MasterSystem, which was non-existent in my neighborhoods throughout childhood. EVERYONE had an NES. i will watch this video twice!
I used to get this Magazine monthly back in the early 90s!
Great stuff Chris! I think I have some CGQ stuff I need to get caught up on, unfortunately.
Love it. Kudos.
Came for the Coury, stayed for the Coury. Please do more together!
Had that issue. Damn, 30 years ago...
I’m not into consoles as much as everyone else. I just really like how you go into the history of gaming so crazy didn’t really know how popular it was back then. I was born in ‘93 so I missed out on a lot of cool stuff
This was a nice video to go to bed to last night. I used to get Sega Visions in the mid 90s when it wasn't quite as drunk on its own supply. I recall it having a bit of a stronger editorial slant than Nintendo Power with some reporting on the Mortal Combat Lawsuit and a lot of coverage of the Sega CD/32X and Sega Channel. I hope you keep doing these.
yesss my night is now set!
Made my Sunday watching this. The power base converter is a far cooler name than the name for it here in England. It was simply called the master system converter.
We had Chidren’s Palace briefly, and Corey is correct (I live in the Midwest)
I'm really late to the party but I would love to see more of Coury on the channel!
Me too!
Chris, Coury, AND JOE?! Awesome episode!
I would love to see a let's read episode with Joe Redifer from Gamesack! Great episode CGQ
That would be great. I'll feel Joe out about it, but he may be too busy with his own show.
I have a stack of sega visions magazines. Some megadrive ones also and the sega cd source book. I love my genesis. I still play my original model 1. This video was great!
As far as the childhood friends that always seem to have everything goes, those were the kids whose parents were rich but we just didn't know it back then.
we had a time out arcade in Jersey at Quaker Bridge mall back in the day, right across from the movie theater
Please make a thing like this more often!
Yes, Power Strike was EXCLUSIVELY a mail in offer of that ONE little magazine. I never even heard of the game until 2002 ish.
Shoutouts to smoke trail fetish boyz 👊🏻
I'd always be drawing missiles.... Robotech... ooooooooOOoOOOhhhh yeahhhh
I feel like I was lucky because I had a NES. I had friends with the same that were happy to trade games around. And I had a couple friends that had the master system. And I played it enough to feel like I owned it! I had enough friends with the matter system to know that there were different bioses worth different but in games.
What was great about Sega visions was that the first few years was like Free for anybody who registered their Sega Systems just like the Challenge news letter before it. Eventually they did go paid subscription.
Man... I wish I had a full collection of all of the magazines from when we were younger. I got a decent amount of Nintendo Power, but thats it.
See this is why really good channels don't have to pump out videos every day. Quality over quantity all day long and on weekends. Love you guys.
Thanks, man!
there was a Children's Palace toy store where I lived in the early 90s, right before the company went out of business. when I saw the store closed, my 8-year old brain thought all the toys were trapped inside forever
that retail space became a Border's Books & Music and everybody lived happily ever after
loved it
I was just watching Jeremy Parish's latest Game Boy Works video before this one and it featured "In Your Face!" which along with "Hoops" had that same type of cut-away that "Pat Riley's Basketball" and "Double Dribble" had.
Love the video
I remember that my brother and I were so fed up that everyone kept going on and on about the NES that we intently begged my mother to buy us a Master System in the Summer of 1987 and we then bugged her again to buy us a Sega Genesis in 1989....My poor mom...Good memories.
[Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure]: Okay, wait. If you guys are really us, what number are we thinking of?
69 dude
Great channel 👍
Will you be doing any more Launch videos? (PS2, Xbox, Gamecube)
Oh wow. Its been a while!
Love the candy cab in the background!
This was great, Corey as a guest presenter is a stroke of genius!
ROS in my eyes is better than Shinobi 3, but imho Shadow Dancer the console version was the best of them all.
I remember I sent away for the converter and Space Harrier 2 with my receipt and upc symbol off the Genesis box. It was a big deal to me back then. I felt that Sega appreciated my choice in them hence why I have been a sega fan since.i believe I bought Muff d.......Errrr I mean Air Diver with my Genesis back in 89 or 90. I Cant exactly remember when I got it. It was my senior year in highschool and I worked and earned enough to buy one. Great, exciting times to be a gamer!
This is fun, I recently got a few Sega Vision mags. I wanted magazines with Sonic 3 & Knuckles in it, but then I just went off and bought years worth of magazines of all kinds lol. I had Nintendo Power from #1 till probably an issue in 1999, and GamePro but never Sega magazines. :(
Classic Gaming Quarterly, My Life in Gaming
I saw a Time-Out inside Southridge in Greendale, WI.
This was great! It would be awesome if you could get together for more of these.
I had a cousin who always had the best games and new consoles as soon as they came out, while I saved lunch money and pocket change to buy the PS1 games on sale pretty much from 1998-2004.
Now my kids are the ones with every single game and console that they ask for....and I have more games than I have time to play.
There was a Children's Palace near me when I was a kid. It had a facade of a castle so it was an experience for sure. It was next to a Showbiz Pizza too. Eat your heart out Toys R Us and Chuck E Cheese.
