10 Brompton Mods for comfortable Audax, touring and bike packing rides.

- Since acquiring my lovely 6 speed Brompton I have gradually made a few changes, here are my top 10.
They can be loosely fitted into these categories:
1. frame protection,
2. comfort,
3. safety and frivolous practicality.
If anyone is interested in any particular supplier, please ask in the comments I always reply promptly and will let you know the details of where you can buy.
I have purchased all the items, none have been provided for testing or anything like that and I can recommend them all.
Music is from CZcams audio library and is by The Westerlies called Best Horizon Gone.
Very useful that. I like the stand especially. The best mod I’ve done is to replace the Brompton front mud flap which I found to be too short and didn’t offer enough protection for the chain etc. I’ve replaced mine with one from RAW mudflaps - they do loads of different widths and lengths. They’re stiff enough not to be blown about and wipeable aswell - vital around here at this time of year as the lanes are full of mud and muck! Oh they don’t affect the fold either.
Hi there Tim, thanks very much for watching. I haven’t come across RAW I’ll check them out. I agree that the original is too short - thanks for the top tip. I might end up with one myself.
Morning Tim. I’ve had a look at their stuff and they look great. Can I ask you what size would you recommend for the front please? I quite like the wide one but don’t know about the fold.
@@stushikesandrides It’s 20cm long and 12cm wide at the bottom albeit it flares out from the base of the guard. It hangs 17.5cm below the guard (compared to about 12.5cm on the old mudflap).. This size doesn’t affect the fold...I think any longer and it may be a nuisance going down kerbs?

I’ve just had my first wet ride with the new RAW mudflap and as you said it’s fantastic. I’ve done a little film on it and given you a mention for such a great tip. I will probably publish in a couple of weeks. Thanks again.

It’s on the agenda for this morning, I incurred the wrath by folding it up and dumping it in the hall in its full post ride glorious filth yesterday! It’s looking forward to a pampering session 😂
I'm also 6ft 2" but get away with the standard seat post because I use a Brooks Flyer saddle, which I think sits a little higher due to the springs.
To be honest I was okay on the standard seatpost on my old b75. I think I may do a follow up video of the three different types I currently have managed to end up with! 😂
I have taken two simple leather straps from/for the front carrier release, to put round the naves, for cleaning! And the special bracket for protecting the fork is also found, less expensive from A.E. in China, as also a number of carbon plates for ordinary, and - definitely needed frame protection on the bike!!! And the small wheels are utterly "useless", but I have latest found some 10 cm wheels from China! London Craftwork also sells a looong leather cover reaching over the triangle!
But I have sown leather on both the frame and the stem. I have a long titanium seat post with a ring mount on top, for my Superlight , also being a tall person. In Denmark the Bromptons are sold with a long seat post as standard, and the telescope post is really "Heavy"! And You may buy a Taiwanese, Joseph Kuosac post for the price of an original! As I have bought a standard length, black titanium seat post, to be able to put it in my black B&W travel box for transport, without having to remove the saddle and post as a first. Finn. Denmark

@@stushikesandrides I found a black Titanium 600 mm seatpost for mine (China), with an integrated seat mount ring! This also looses the weight off the Brompton Clamp. (You are also able to find better, lighter and much less complicated - seat mounts from several firms. Mine, on my - short titanium post, is an AceOffix with - wedges inside a ring).
But the post isn't theft-safe then, of course! But as I hardly leave it alone, it doesn't matter that much! I am an 100 kilo man, so it doesn't matter much, but for my own pride, joy and fun! I have also changed many bolts and nuts to titanium, latest for my brakes and brake pads. Also the front axle and the security disc and parts, preventing the wheel to leave the bike without proper notice, may be changed to titanium parts from China.
And sadly for me, as a Dane, it is less complicated to buy Brompton-like parts from China than from "EU-liberated" GB!!! Several Brompton copies are built and sold from Korea, Taiwan and China, also pure titanium frames for the old type bikes, but beware of the fact that they are mostly intended for lighter Asian people.
London Craftwork had found a Russian producer (Most likely former Military-?) of Titanium frames and parts, but no one do deals with Russia any more! 😄 Finn
@@finncarlbomholtsrensen1188 I have been looking on AE since we last spoke and as you say there are several companies offering very considerable reductions over U.K. and US dealers particularly on titanium parts.
I’m around 90kg but I’m sure I will find one long and strong enough from one of them.
I am impressed by the brace bridge extender I bought from Och parts in Singapore, it’s allowed more accessories to be fitted to the bars. Very useful. Take care cycling in the colder, darker months.
As named, mine is a "Lightweight", with mudguards and titanium stays! But the metal clamps on top of the guards and the to holders, are really "heavy metal" still. So I have found two new alu-holders for the mudguards, and some clamps, with bolts, from carbon, to replace them all (China). And the new, short Brompton-marked pump for the back-frame, is a Chinese Lezyne, slightly disguised as a Brompton part! I needed to buy one from England (Brilliant Bikes), but it was - very costly and very complicated. You do have made problems for yourself! ☺ Finn
I don't know if I could have bought from a Danish Dealer (price?), but it is easy to just buy from the net!
@@finncarlbomholtsrensen1188 You are correct in identifying that for people like us, sourcing components from companies all over, this country, leaving the EU has been a major complication. Many feel it was a mistake and wish it could be undone. Who knows what will happen next!
I have a garmin Explore 2 and it fits just right on the handle bar to the left top. There's room there believe it or not. I use it with a Varia RTL515. I put clear vinyl on all of my frame to protect it. I purchased the B17 Special and it works perfect.
It’s amazing how we manage to make such a small space on the brompton’s bars work for us. There’s so many solutions some pretty inventive. I must say I’m liking the look of the Varia but torn over that and a couple of safety camera/ light combos.

@@stushikesandrides I was going to get the Varia light and camera combo and decided not to because most of the reviews give the camera a failing grade. I think the next improved model may be better but the current one definitely i wouldn't recommend. So, i purchased the light/radar combo and I'm very happy with it. I was also torn between getting handlebar mirrors and eyeglass mirrors. I can completely vouch for the eyeglass mirrors because you don't have to take your eyes off the road. Even though I have the Varia, i like to check if it's a car or bike coming up in back of me in certain areas. The only thing i need for my bike is a headlight for when my city has special citywide night bike rides.

Did you have to cut the grips down ?, I have just bought a pair and think I am going to have to because the brakes/shifters can't be moved inboard any further due to the curve of the bars
Hi there, thanks for watching and commenting. No mine fitted perfectly with no chopping but when I had my old B75 I did have to slice a little off. I’m not sure why these fitted to be honest. I’m sure your hands will thank you for going to the trouble of fitting them. 👍
