Massive renovation of townhouses in the city of Łódź - Hanna Zdanowska

There are more than 6,000 townhouses in the city centre of Łódź and, until recently, most of them have not been renovated since their construction 200 years ago. The City of Łódź raised funds and started to renovate the entire neighbourhoods, with over 1 billion euros coming from the EU funds. The local authorities work with the social workers - the Lighthouse Keepers - who support residents in the difficult relocation process during the renovation of their homes. When the city began revitalising the buildings, this inspired private businesses to join the renovation as well, resulting in a true transformation of the city centre.
