- Taken live from a 1975 Carnegie Hall Concert with Bill Watrous and The Manahattan Wild Refuge were the opener of the set. This chart (which was arranged by Jay Chattaway) was only one song that's never been recorded or could been recorded on any Maynard album. So far the live audience was incredible since playing the track from that concert constantly ever since. Overall a big shoutout to Gina aka loveformaynard (then maynardlove) whom I ask to provide me a copy of this song and thankfully I did, so far her channel honoring Maynard Ferguson is amazing! To all the Maynard fans out here, even though there was never a video made yet here on CZcams, I'm the first to bring for ya'll enjoy.
The people that were there in personnel are:
Maynard Ferguson - leader and trumpet
Stan Mark, Dennis Noday, Joe Mosello and Ernie Garside (who's then Maynard's manager plus music contractor and coordinator for the band) - Trumpets
Mark Colby, Mike Migliore, Bruce Johnstone - Saxes
Randy Purcell and Rick Stepton - Trombones
Allan Zavod on piano, Rick Petrone - bass, and Joe D'Imperio - Drums
This all I found through research off the Live at the Top DVD.
Great chart arrangement done by the great Jay Chattaway who done some stuff with Maynard, Bob James, Gato Barbieri and went on to become a feature composer for most TV and films.
Wow....first time hearing this! Thanks
Great 👍
Saw Maynard and his band do this medley at Kansas State University in 1976. Had a bootleg recording of it but it was lost somewhere along the line. Always wished he'd recorded it. Very glad to have stumbled across this video after not hearing it for so long. Thanks!
I was at this show...I was 16 at the time and my parents took me everywhere to see Maynard (my idol; my playing style is so very influenced by him)...this was an incredible show with Bill Watrous and the Manhattan Wildlife Refuge the opening act. They had the crowd going nuts...then Maynard came out and opened with LaFiesta...nailed you to the seat...his way of saying who was The Boss...I will never forget this show, Thank you so much for posting this!!!
Thanks to those who gave me the correct information of the personnel who there at this taped concert, I later fixed the changes as suggested. So far everything's good now!
Coming soon a second version of this on the way fellas, this time another re-do!
Danny on drums not Joe ‘
I love his rendition of this, he was on fire and so was Mike Migliore on the soprano. Nice pictures, you should post the La Fiesta from the 1975 Carnegie hall concert. That one was amazing, he was on fire for this concert, didn't miss a note and it sounds like he filled up the whole place with his sound, he probably could of even without a mic.
Danny D'Imperio on Drums. Rick Petrone on Bass. Bruce Johnstone, bari. Bobby Millitello joined the band in late '76.
Wow, Both Maynard and Bill Watrous in one concert. That must have been incredible!!!
Please note on 5:15-8:01, there a little error when it fade it and then come back in. Wanted to let ya'll know. Sorry for the inconveinence.
I'm already familiar with his older work from the Roulette recordings e.g. "Frame for the Blues" and all of that. Thanks for asking.
Danny not Joe on Drums ‘ 😊🎉
@screech57 Great talk on your comment. I understand your feelings on Primal Scream. I seen to enjoyed it myself and it's one of my favorite Maynard Ferguson albums. Consider it dynamite! Plus Consquistador was my first introduction to Maynard Ferguson as a kid in the late 1990s. After that everything changed and I became a true Maynard Ferguson fan ever since.
Rick Stepton definitely played trombone on this. He was in the band a short time, and played the bone solo on "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me" on the Carnegie concert.
Love all his music from early days up until him going to a better place! I must admit I loved his stuff he did over here in Blighty with Keith Mansfield it gave him confidence again and so when he went back to the states he just roared! I even like the Hollywood album don't know why I just do. Being a lead trumpet player myself I'd love to do Hollywood don't know why as it's not his best but it's just one of those things. Done majority of his other stuff (playing lead and solo us hard work!) and it's great! I still have an original MF stepped vcup mouthpiece made in England it actually saved my career a few years back suddenly couldn't play a note and this is the mouthpiece which stopped me packing in after 35 years !
Lynn Nicholson was not on this-he was only on the band in '74-the trumpets here were Stan, Dennis, Joe & Garside
I'd like to have seen Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me recorded as well - it was from that same time period, right before the Primal Scream release. At the time, Primal Scream was a major disappointment - way too disco! Too many studio guys had their hands in that pie - both arranging and playing - and it just didn't seem like the band we all got to used to seeing live. THIS recording is that band!
