It means the same thing as "in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth". God first thought "I" and gave "himself" the "title" "I". Elohim. Elohim, all. God first thought of itself and named itself. That is the separation of heaven and "earth". The all vs the "I". Spirit vs ego. In the beginning, God saw itself and said "me". And the All was alone with itself in the formless deep and so it created the universe - light. And God saw the light and it was good, and separated the light from the darkness. Heat and antimatter. The "day" and "night" symbolize the law of polarity, yin and yang, the creation energies that make up all matter. Darkness and light. Heat and antimatter. These became universal laws (gender). The firmament between the waters is the separation of spirit and matter which was still extremely spiritual, hence both are called waters. The firmament acts as the veil under which we experience the "physical", it is the beginning of the manifestation of the kosmos. The firmament is clearly the barrier of the kosmos (the veil) which makes spirit and matter separate.
