The thing about Gaston is that he only cares about his own goals. He didn't value Belle for who she was as a person and was incredibly disrespectful to her. He saw her as a prize and was arrogant to the point of setting up a wedding before proposing. She never even agreed to dating him. He even tried to blackmail her by threatening to have her father put in an asylum. I think his red flags are more obvious to females and those who have seen the movie recently enough to fully notice the details.
