The best way I've found to choose lenses is to start with one lens. Then you may notice that there are things you wished that lens did. Then choose the next lens to meet that wish
That’s so true! It’s like anything in life. Try something and it will lead you to what you want/like. We always think of the outcome, but we don’t know what we don’t know. So it’s the journey that gets us there! :)

I agree! The 35mm f2 doesn't come off my camera when I go out for street photography. I love keeping things simple and minimal on the street.
I just converted from Sony to Fuji for everything but wildlife. I bought the 2 lenses you recommended - 35mm (f/1.4 instead of f/2) and 16-80mm f/4. Learned the basics of the Fuji camera, went to my daughter’s graduation, and took the best portraits and landscapes I’ve ever made, along with having the most fun shooting. Fuji is amazing, but you here already knew that.

Man - I can’t tell you what a massive help you’ve been. My wife and I are getting started in photography. We bought an X-T4 and the 23mm f2. Totally love it. Your X-T4 guide and all your videos have been massive for us.

Great video, love the keep it simple approach, it’s the honest and rational one. I personaly somehow ended up with the 18-55 kit lens, a superb 80 f2.8 macro, a 16 1.4 and 56 1.2, all great lenses if a bit on the expensive side, for everyday use anyway. Cheers!

35 f2 is the one that always stays on my camera. But for my starting kit, 55-200 is a must. Also I do have a 16 f1.4 but I find myself hardly using it.
Very useful. Sold my X-100V because there are times I ”need” a different lens. But I will stay in the Fuji family. I subscribed 👍

I've got the XT-4 with the 18-55 "kit" lens, 35 f/2 and a third-party lens I don't use. Pretty much rocking the 35 the whole time, but I might be getting into real-estate photography so I have been eyeing the 8-16, which as you said on the discount you got, is about how much they go for second-hand so I'm not opposed to the price.

I had the same problem with deciding which lenses to buy with the X-Pro3 back in December 2019. I ended up with the 16-55 f/2.8 for flexibility. It’s quite decent.
Eventually I got the 35 f/1.4 for portraits. Considering a telephoto lens in the next year or so.

recently got the 50-140 for cheap and it is AAMAZING! fast focus and the OIS is really good in it as well for video!

We all have our faves but now that I've started to use the IBIS fuji XS10 I've rediscovered the joy of my old 60mmf2,8 macro. Sure it's slow at focusing but it's light and does great Street and flowers

Thanks Roman! A very useful rundown on the lenses. I’m debating between 16mm, 23mm or 50mm f2. Trying to figure out the next one. I have the Zeiss Touit 32mm f1.8 which I love and find I use for street almost all the time. It’s biggest draw back is no weather sealing, which seems ridiculous. So thanks again for your input!

Hey Roman another great tips video for our Fuji community. As it happens, I purchased most of those lenses with my original X-T2 all those years ago and that cheers me because I have sometimes flirted with the idea of selling the primes, simply because they don’t get used that much. You changed my mind on that for sure. I really am always pleasantly surprised at the results when I do occasionally use them and it prompts me to try and leave the 18-55 at home and be forced to use them. They really do shrink down the kit size and weight and the balance on the smaller bodied X-T2 is great. But I think the issue that makes me take my go-to 18-55 is its sheer versatility and sheer superb performance. Whenever I shoot with, say the 16mm, it just feels like I’m not getting in close enough a lot of the time…but hey, I’m a shy street photographer and admit, the occasions I got over my nervousness and moved in closer to subjects are definitely the times I got the best out of that prime. Fully agree on the WR choice too though it is a way to shave off cost for those who know they’ll only do fair weather photography. Aperture rings forever - lets hope anyway ;)

You nailed the whole video, great job. And it's truly comforting to know I have time to make my lens purchases and also probably not always be completely happy or satisfied with them, as it is indeed a process which needs time patience and practice above all. I'll start with the 16-80, I almost bought the 16-55 but abandoned this idea mainly because of the excessive weight the f2.8 has and that I also believe the 16-80 is a very good lens offering an even greater focal range. The biggest challenge I think will come with low light pictures, will see how this will work out, if it's possible to get it done nice without any prime lens. Cheers!

I recently switched from the Canon system to the Fujifilm system and love the 35 F2 and 16-80 F4 lenses so far.
this video was simply amazing. i'm looking to get my first fuji camera, the x-e4. i'm planning to get one lens and do street & portrait photography and some videos with it. before, i was considering the 27mm f2.8 wr but this video changed my mind. i gonna wait for sales and get the camera with the 35mm f2. thank you.

I used to have 35mm f1.4. Id say you can never go wrong with it. Compact, image quality was 👌 but it was just too narrow for me. Sold it and went for 23mm f1.4 and never looked back. Only got settled with 2 lenses, the 23mm f1.4 and 18-55 f2.8-f4
That's what I currently use. The kit lens does not disappoint imo.
I have both the 35mm and the 23mm and I simply don't like the 23mm (I own two different 23mm).
Have thought about 27mm and 30mm's but I don't think they have the quality of the 35mm 1.4, I wish fuji did a 27-30mm focusing on quality.
In the meantime the 35mm is just fine for me; I don't mind the focal length as much as I dislike the 23mm's distortion.

The best Fuji lenses in my case are the ones I own, 18-55mm f2.8-4 and 35mm f2 as my budget is zero for future purchases. ( I do own a Canon system with a wide variety of lenses so it’s not like I am missing out on a focal range.) The zoom I use for street and the 35mm f2 is for the occasional portrait as I find the eye af and lightweight Fuji system beneficial.
Excellent, thank you for this video. That was basically my thinking as well during my journey from Nikon into Fuji. I went for the f4 10-24 & 16-80 zooms along with the f2 23, 35 & 50 Fujicron primes and the 2.8/27 pancake. Two bodies X-E3 and X-H1. Except for X-E3 with the 10-24 everything else is from the used market. I never had any problems with buying used Fuji gear, I have got two f2/35 and noted a small in sharpness.
on the same journey, but i won't drop nikon dslrs, their viewfinders are still better and flash work is easier/cheaper to do in darker spaces (dansing parties). fuji is getting street/travel system though. i started with 10-24, 35f1.4 and 55-200, later added 27f2.8 (which i use *a lot* now), and once i found a used 23f2 for 250e, i've picked it up, just in case, it's nice, but i'd have hard time deciding which one to keep, 23 or pancake 27... 50mm - nope, 35f1.8 nikkor dx or 50mm f1.8 nikkor fx can do the same job as i don't need fast af for that lenght...
Very interesting video, and I found out I ended up with a kit quite similar :
- The old but still great 10-24mm (only drawback no WR)
- the 60mm macro for the longer shot, the autofocus is slower but the newer body compensate a little and I get the macro for a small size.
- the 35mm f2
- the 27mm mark2
And the 27mm is almost glued on the body, With the 60mm for details.
I was hesitant so far for the telezoom due to the overall size Vs body. I will give it a look before our next travel.

The 60mm macro is a great portrait lens as well, that hardly anyone seems to know about.

This was very helpful. Particularly the 16-80 mention. I’m about to buy my 1st Fujifilm camera and wasn’t sure if I should get that lens with it or go for the cheaper option kit.

I got the x-t4 with the 16-80 and 35 f2 as my starting lenses!! So I feel very clever now watching this and seeing you recommend them :)
This is very good advice/suggestion, especially for people just getting started in photography, but not for me because I have more Fuji XF lenses than I know what to do with. I found while doing my own non scientific testing (really non scientific hahaha) that my primes 16 f/2.8, 35 f/2 and 50 f/2 are sharper than my zooms at the same angle of view, I’m comparing them to the 16-80 and the 55-200, but I admit that I can only see the difference when pixel peeping the same photo side by side and zoomed in 100%. Stay safe Roman.
ppl who're just getting started dont need these $500 pro primes, one can start with much cheaper zooms, even xc 16-50 (i've started with it and still keep it for the day when i'll get xe3 for less than $400)) is more than enough for startes. ppl who start in photo will spend thier 1st year just learning how to frame correctly and learning what they need glass with f4 or plus most of the time, you'll do that painful expensive trip to f1.4-f2 thinking that your darn need it, and later you'll understand - nope, any decent glass at f4-f5.6 is ok for non portait work (travel, street etc) :-P and extra bonus - using dirt cheap 16-50 in the beginning will allow you to know for sure what prime you'd really need the most. e.g. it allowed me to see right away that i don't need 16, i'd need 14 (or less) or 23/35 first, and i'd need *more* than 50 (rather 70+)

Excellent trio of primes also own the small 16mm f2,8 & the 18mm f2,0 much improved with firmware and especially newer bodies One on body and two lenses in in two jacket pockets great street walk about city kit !
Zoom kit the XF 10-24mm f4 & XF 18-135mm both OIS job done always shop around for good used gear :)
And please use a lens hood all the time !
I was hoping you were going to say mating elephants at least 3 more times! Nikon shooter here. I purchased an X-T2 and the new Fringer adapter to adapt Nikkor lenses to Fuji. I am in love! A Fuji with a 200-500 is fantastic!
My kit consists of a used 18-55 f2.8-4, an xc 35mm f2, and a couple of m42 mount pentax (takumar) primes. Haven't found a need for a new lens since. Between the fuji autofocus lenses and the tack sharp pantax vintage lenses, I cover from 18-200mm at many different aperatures.

I have exactly the 16/80 and 35f2! Sometimes the 35 is a little too narrow and I was thinking about switching to the 23, but I'm afraid that it could be too wide for portrait or in general as a the only prime in my gear (as an amateur, I cannot justify having two).
It took me a while but I finally found my ideal travel/ street lens set. The 18mm f1.4 and 50mm f2 for a XT4.
I love the „Fujicron“ series, too. Good Job, man.
Roman, i just came across your channel and this video. Its super helpful, as i’m about to get a fuji. I am planning on this being my compact, carry around and travel option for when i don’t want to lug my canon FF around. I was thinking of getting the 18-55 zoom for both its IS and flexible zoom range for grabbing shots quickly when you don’t have time to change lenses. You didn’t comment on it at all...Is that due to concerns about image quality? Thanks, Craig

Roman, for street photography, have you considered the Fuji X100V camera? One 23mm fixed lens, but has a digital teleconverter that allows you to shoot 50mm and 70mm. Fuji uses their interpolation software to enable shooting in 50mm and 70mm. I’ve blown up test images 100% and 200%, and can’t see a difference. When using the teleconverter you can only shoot in jpeg, but I don’t find that a disadvantage for street photography. I used to carry around by X-T2 with the 3 primes you mentioned, but now have replaced that set up with an X100V. As you may know, the X100V uses a leaf shutter, allowing flash sync up to 1/4000 of a second. Also has a 4 stop built in ND filter, and an EVF and OVF viewfinder. Amazing camera.
Hi, fairly new here and really like your videos. Just my opinion, but for travel, the kit lens is fantastic! (18-55) It can still take great street shots. So many benefits. My 35 f/2 stays on the camera otherwise for street. I bought the 70-300mm and it's fabulous too, but really use my DSLR for wildlife. The 18mm f/2 is the only Fuji lens I do not like. Perhaps I'm missing something but on my x-t3 and my x-t20 the photos are terrible.
Most people don't like 18 f2, its slow to focus, loud and misses focus a lot
My experience with Fuji so far is that, is that you can easily go for the safe trio of the 23mm f2.0(/1.4,in my opinion if you can afford this lens over the 2.0 there is no downside other than the fact that the 2.0 fits in pockets easily).Same logic applies on the 35mm even though some people will stick with the f2.0 for reasons I don't quite get.Finally the expensive lens of the three is the zoom lens of 50-130 f2.8 which even though I never used zoom lenses before i love.
With the kit mentioned above you will have a safe bet that you will not end up selling any gear anytime soon and that you will understand quite fast if there is something you miss like a longer focal length lens or a fish eye lens,i am pretty confident suggesting these three lenses even to people that are not into street photography or that haven't been familliar with wide angle lenses on the past.

There is one thing that bothers me. I've already watched a ton of videos on different Fiji lenses, read their tests, watched the samples, and I noticed that barely anyone ever mentions the 27mm pancake lens as their favourite.
Can you guys, share your opinion on this lens? Do you consider it a good all-around lens for a street photography? Or, to put it differently, why would you pick 23/2 or 35/2 rather than 27/2.8 as your "everyday, walking" lens? I know it's one step slower but it is rarely crucial factor in the street photography. Tests I read suggest that optically it is quite good, so? Why so little love for it?
I personally love pancake lens (it started with the love affair I had with my Pentax 40mm limited and then continued when I was in the Samsung NX system) and I'd love to use it as my "basic" lens for walking outside with my camera (with no specific photo "objectives" in mind), but I'd like to know your opinion if this is a good idea before I'll make my mind.
In the beginning I'm going to buy two primes for my Fuji system. One of them is going to be a 50/2 - that's beyond any doubts. What would you pick as a second: 23/2, 35/2, or 27/2.8 and, most importantly, why?

First lens i bought was a Pentacon 50mm 1.8, bought an adapter from aliexpress and absolutely love the thing to death. After that I bought a Fuji 35mm 1.4 and I can say that for the fuji system, I got the holy grail with those two. The older one might not be the best vintage nifty 50 but its magical non the less. And the 35? What a beauty, absolute magical lens. Only missing a decent sub 20mm lens to cover pretty much every focal length I like to shoot with, the original XC 16mm kit just doesn't cut it for me. It's definitely missing that je ne sais quoi.

Oh yes liked it. I am jumping into the Fuji world. I have owned DSLR’s and learned to shoot with 1 prime lens...a 50mm 3.5 Macro. Used it for 12 years and developed all my black and white stuff. Then moved to Fujifilm color transparencies ( slides) which allowed me to shoot and share more. No Flickr or Facebook in the 70’s..haha. In 2017 started to shoot with an amazing little pocket camera with a 28-70mm (35mm) with. 1” sensor. Man it was liberating. Talk about becoming invisible for portrait or street photography, pretty amazing. So my goal with Fuji is to stay small. The more mid range zooms are still a bit of a stretch but the wide angle zooms up to 24 might work in lieu of two primes. Thanks ...love the 500 by the way. Too bad you did not have more time.
I've finished my collection after exchanging all my Nikon ... 2x xt4's I just have to ✋ wait for lockdown to lift .. I've gone 23f2 and 50f2. I agree the 1655 and 50140 are Great 👍
I have all the same lenses except the 16-55, mainly because I tried it a few times, but the copies I tried were flawed optically (due to copy variation). I gave up and settled for the 16-80, which is stellar (as sharp as the 16-55, 23 or 35) between 20mm and 50mm. Optically, it suffers at the extreme wide and long ends, so I would suggest complementing it with a 14, 16, or 90 prime, or the 10-24 and 55-200 or 50-140 zooms. For street, yes agree, the 35/2 by itself or the 23/50 combo is the way to go.

if you need two lenses with the best image quality and no issue paying the extra price, go for 16mm f1.4 and the 56mm f1.2. one for landscape and another for portrait. sure it may not be zoom lenses, but you can always compensate by just moving around.
Zooming and walking are not the same, because you change perspective by changing your distance to your subject.
@@DerJohnnyWalker a 50mm prime is somewhat similar (barring distortion) to 50mm on a 24-70mm zoom lens. but i guess youre referring to the compression on a diff focal length ie 200mm on a 70-200mm, then yes. but honestly in a normal situation, would you rather carry a heavy 70-200mm to a relatively smaller prime?
