    The Summit (and Peak) is the best synth that nobody talks about, yet I see one in so many studios for people that are serious about making music and getting it done. It does so much and for a price cheaper than most synths people compare it to.

    I bought the Summit last year (second hand), I love this machine!
    It's beautiful and built like a tank, it sounds vintage and modern at the same time and it's very pleasant to use.
    When I got home with it, I was like a child discovering its new toy and I played with it for several hours.
    Absolutely no regrets, I’ll keep it!
    The reverb is fantastic 😍

    Thank you Scott for this video. I bought my first synth in 1978. I've owned and still own many, many exotic synths like M12, PPG2.3, Polaris, OB8, XTK, and currently own 26 hardware synths. BUT... the Summit is just one of the best and most versatile hardware synths since the last 10 years. (together with the Virus TI) Ok, there are also synths like the 3rd Wave or Deckards Dream, but those are 'exotics' and are a complete different league. If you look for a real versatile workhorse, the Summit is one to buy. It sounds awesome.

    I love the Novation Summit, simply for the way it sounds, minimal menu diving, it practically does everything, and there are many thousands of professionally designed patches for it available to download for it (many of them for free). Also, it you want a smaller more compact 1/2 Summit just buy the Novation Peak.

    I have to agree: The Summit can do a decent Prophet. I've been getting mine to reproduce Oberheim synth patches with extremely satisfying results. There's so much this synth can do. And Scott, you're burying the lead - it is SO easy to program on the Summit. Obviously, extremely complicated patches will take more time, but it's all there in front of you. Simpler (80's style) patches can be developed in minutes. Thanks again, Scott, for showcasing this "workhorse".

    I´ve started with a Peak, then a Summit, then a 24-voice "power wall" (Peak and Summit) for a while. Finally the Peak was sold but the Summit will stay (maybe forever). An excellent instrument with so much potential (and joy).

    Totally agree. When I first bought my Summit, I decided that even if it eventually took a back stage and didn't get used as much, I would never sell it. I love the traditional layout and look, and in my opinion too, the effects are first rate. In fact the reverb, sounds as good as most of my paid vst effects. I've never found Roland's default reverb to be anything great, (maybe my taste), but it sounds like it's lacking enough diffusion resolution. The Summit on the other hand, is transparent and airy like a good studio reverb should be. I don't need to say anything about it's synth sounds, they speak for themselves!

    The Summit is an incredible synth. It most definitely doesn't get the attention it deserves.
    I was curious about one thing though. Does the FX signal chain work for you the way it should? There seems to be almost no difference when changing the order (biggest audible difference is when changing between parallel and series). Also curious if you get any sound when setting the dry signal to 0? The only way I can get (what I think is) a 100% wet signal is by utilizing the output and FX routing options.

  • @klstay
    @klstay Před 2 měsíci +1

    As a "core" poly if it takes you all the places you want to go (and it covers quite a bit of space) you definitely get there quickly and easily with the interface/workflow. The thing is Hydrasynth Deluxe (costing new what this does used) covers more territory should that be important, but you have to work harder to get where you want to go. Having straight to master worthy onboard effects is a huge plus, but enough with the great panel layout to make the difference? The filter section is good, but were they to release say an "Everest" synth based on this with the SEM, 2140, and Moog filters, a poly AT keyebed, and Sequential vintage settings that would be a phenomenal synth IMHO.

  • @Pepijn_a.k.a._Akikaze
    @Pepijn_a.k.a._Akikaze Před 3 měsíci +1

    The Summit is a great synth. It is hard to make bad sounds with it. The reverb is mindblowing. I prefer it to the Hydraynth's. Panel design and form factor are the best I have ever seen. I like my synths not too deep. Try using noise as a filter mod source! Not every synth can do that. The virtual sync oscillator is a Novation invention that every digital synth should have. It can make drone sounds like a modular synth without having to play a key. As no synth is perfect, here are my complaints: Navigation is prone to mistakes. When using a multi, midi control still has flaws, even with the new firmware. There is no rear connectivity legend above on the front panel. The order of connections is not logic. The amount of waves in a table could be higher. Selection of pedal destinations could be wider.

    If a Summit fell into my lap for free I would be ecstatic, but between my Hydra and Access Virus, I feel like I have the digital/virtual analog pallet more than adequately covered. And even before those acquisitions, I felt like the demos that won me over had a lot more character. .....that said, there are a ton of Hydra demos out there that sound awful, and largely showcase the Hydra's brittle, harsh side. Being that I own one, I know better ...maybe the same could be said of the Summit?

  • @WildernessMusic_GentleSerene

    Waiting for the next Summit MKII. Need a larger screen, there is plenty of room, for editing wavetables and prepping them right on the hardware. I do NOT buy synths that need a computer to prepare imported files. I doubt the Summit needs a computer for sound design though. One of the very rare hybrid (digital oscillators/analog filter) synths available. And this is the second time I am hearing about the quality of the effects, maybe the best effects any synth has ever included in history.

    • @leftovernoise
      @leftovernoise Před 3 měsíci +4

      I've had a summit since they released and I absolutely would not want a bigger screen. I love the summit because you barely need the screen or to menu dive. The only thing you need a computer for is to draw and upload custom wave tables. In the 4 years I've had it, it's been hooked up to my computer a total of 2 times and I use it every day. So many synths are leaning too heavily on a screen which in my opinion, defeats the point of using hardware in the first place.

    • @leftovernoise
      @leftovernoise Před 3 měsíci +2

      And I can also speak to the quality of the effects. I have a whole pedal board of expensive pedals for my synths and rarely use them on the summit. It's reverb especially is better than the vast majority of reverb pedals I've used

    • @klaus1234567890
      @klaus1234567890 Před 3 měsíci +2

      I used the computer for the summit only for the two updates and occasionally to make a backup copy of my sounds. And yes, the screen is big enough, the only thing for a summit 2 would be LEDs at each knob to show the position of the patch, but this would increase the price significantly.

    • @WildernessMusic_GentleSerene
      @WildernessMusic_GentleSerene Před 3 měsíci

      I have seen the computer software for preparing wavetables, are you stating that it is not necessary, that the small screen is capable of all the same preparation as the software program? How long does it take on the summit compared to the computer? @@leftovernoise

  • @RikMaxSpeed
    @RikMaxSpeed Před 3 měsíci +1

    I sold my Summit because it was just too bland - the filter is characterless, though maybe that’s a strength for some.
    The HydraSynth has better FX, particularly the reverb, but the Summit has a much wider sonic sweet spot than the Hydra.
    I don’t really miss either vs the DSI OB-6 and the Prophet X.

    • @kierenmoore3236
      @kierenmoore3236 Před 3 měsíci +1

      I have both - you’re right about the Summit having a wider sweet soot, but it also has the best Reverb imho. I only use the Hydra for Industrial.

    • @ScottsSynthStuff
      @ScottsSynthStuff  Před 3 měsíci +2

      I have both. The FX on the Hydrasynth are good, but the FX, especially the reverb, on the Summit just blow it away. There's no comparison.

    • @swanofnutella4734
      @swanofnutella4734 Před 3 měsíci

      I've heard nothing but praise about Summit's FX, and not much about Hydra's reverb, but I don't have a Summit to make my own personal comparison. All I can say is Hydra's reverb seems more functional than impressive, though it does self-upgrade on more organic/analogue-ish patches. I'm not a live performer though, so in-built reverb is at best, a reference, and not a priority.
