Detailed Review of a used VW Touareg 7L equipped with a 2.5 l R5 TDI engine.
I bought a used first gen. 2006 Volkswagen Touareg. A Touareg with the 2nd worst engine it was available with (the worst reliability wise is the 5.0 V10 TDI) . So in this video you will see the exterior, interior, the engine, how it drives and also what kind of issues I had with it, and what kind of issues this particular model with this engine can have.

Hi 2 years since i posted on here and my 2005 R5 2.5 tdi is still going strong
I have 200.000 miles on it now and in the tume i have had it i have replaced the 2 lower rear control arms and springs and 2 brake calipers discs and pads all round 2 oil services the centre prop shaft baring and 4 new tyres
The AC has got a whole in it and i will have to get that fixed
I will be sorting an oil leek on the engine i am almost sure its the turbo oil feed
But at 200.000 miles i think i will be changing the turbo as i do a lot of long European trips and dont want to be strsnded .
Your points about this engine being unreliable are not very valid in my opinion this car has 320.000kil 200.000miles on it and its going strong no smoke at any time its smooth and has good torque the gearbox is smooth and its a nice torrer for long holidays where you can travel all day on the motorway and still go off road at any time
The engine is easy to service with lots of room and easy access and lots of cheap parts
    Yes a 3.0 v6 would be nice
But how much is a new timing chain on 1 of them
And how easy is it to stop the oil pouring out of it from every end ?
I fancy a Q7 next so will be watching your video on that
Or perhaps a x5 i dont know yet
But finally when i see my wife drive down the road with my little girl in the back seat i feel happy that they are in the strongest car ever made
And one thats worth 1100£ 😅
And thats a nice thought when you know how badly my wife drives 😅

Nice review, my R5 just clocked over 750,00 original kms and still runs like a dream, the same R5 in T5 vans will easily run up these kms too, but as you've stated are several things to keep a close eye on... furthermore there's actually an optional 16" rim for the R5 Touareg as they have the smallest brakes of all the models...

I've been trolling the internet for reviews and this has to be the best and the funnest. Which is great because I live on a rock near the antartic and I am waiting 6 weeks for a ship to bring my V6 touareg to the Island. You made me laugh but you also made me feel pleased that I sold my 2.5 Touareg and waiting for my V6 version. But how do I now tell my dad that his Touareg 2.5 is sh**t ? He wont have a bad word said about his car. THe V6 is more economical as you said. Quite surprised that you said you would buy another one. Love your accent,. DJ Paddy, Falkand Islands Radio Presenter. There are no Touaregs on this island. It's only Land Rovers, so I will be the first to import one.

Romanian city hall car tax: 2l engine- 30 euros, 2.0-2.6l 300 euros; 2.6-3l 550 eur. everything bigger not even worth mentioning so basically we are not allowed to be car enthusiasts. I already have a Phaeton so a second 3l engine in the family would be just sponsoring a worthless local government. R5 would have been a nice compromise but all mechanics start hyperventilating whenever I bring it up.

Exactly the same punishment in Serbia! >:(
2.0 and under is up to about 300 Euros. 2.1 - 2.5 - 450 Euros. 2.6 - 3.0 - 800 Euros. 3.1 and up - 1.500 Euros. And that is for cars 10-20 years old. For under 10 years, it is a lot more expencive. The only price break is for 20+ year old cars, where no matter how big the engine is it will cost up to 700 Euros.

If you have any VW with a DSG and you can start to feel or notice your gear changes, take it for a gearbox service. It's only a few hundred dollars and the gearbox will shift like new again, seamlessly and right when you ask it to. The gearboxes on those things can and do fail if they're not maintained. One of the first signs it's beginning to fail is sluggish gear changes.
