  • In this video, we use the Ricoh GR III with:
    - Lightpix Labs Flash Q20ii Detachable Flash to show how it can be used with the Ricoh GR III - amzn.to/2FYnsMV
    - ND Filter (in-camera) ON to slow the raging waterfalls to a silkier smooth look.
    - Crop Mode is used to change from 28mm to 35mm to 50mm in-camera crop on the fly while shooting.
    - Positive Film setting for jpeg is ON the Ricoh GR IIIfor out-of-camera image as well as RAW
    I really appreciate the help of my good friend, Eileen, who acted as our model, as well as our tour guide to get behind the falls. She's an awesome, beautiful person and made it a blast attempting this chaos!

      I have to say you likely made the right choice! I have a few issues w the construction of the selection wheel but in general no camera compares to the Ricoh line. Enjoy my friend!

    You can also shoot raw+ at 28mm then use the builtin cropping function to create a jpeg of smaller size for social. More steps but allows for reframing in post.

      @DozierGraphic  Před 4 lety

      Yes Owen, you are correct! I didn't go into the 'in-camera' editing, which is something that is pretty powerful with the Ricoh, but since I will likely never use the in-camera editing I didn't go into that, but should've pointed that out when I was referring to 'straight out of the camera.' Thanks for watching and I do appreciate the input my friend!

      Thanks jonoschen! Always appreciate the support! For so many years I took my DSLR for granted and didn't play around with many of the features, but found with the Ricoh that doing so makes me want to get out and try new things. Spending as much as I did on it also makes me want to get my money's worth out of it lol!

      @DozierGraphic  Před 4 lety +1

      Thanks Simon, I definitely saw that had I put more time into getting the settings spot on and spread the flash a little better I could've gotten better results with the SOOC images. But again, the video somewhat explains why that didn't happen lol I've always neglected the idea of SOOC, but my opinion is changing regarding jpeg. I def see the usefulness of it!

  • @RonK
    @RonK Před 4 lety +1

    As far as I can recognize you were using the GR III with the Lens Adapter (GA-1) - only for filters (e. pol-filter?) or was there the wide conversion lens (GE-4) in there, turning it into a 21mm instead of 28mm (or 26mm / 38mm when using the crop feature)?

    • @DozierGraphic
      @DozierGraphic  Před 4 lety

      I do not use the 21mm Ronny. I just like to have the GA-1 adapter on with the 49mm UV filter to protect the lens in case of drop, but mostly to limit any dust contacting the lens/sensor. Not sure it prevents it completely, but certainly can't hurt. It also helps in 'gripping' the camera for vertical shots, as you'll see in my street videos. I don't think I have an interest in the 21mm, but it certainly has it's uses!

    Good example of the Lightpix Labs Q20ii in use. I've thought about buying one for some time now... just haven't made the plunge. Shooting RAW under this scenario is a must - I did like a few of the SOOC JPEG's you showed. I use my Canon and Olympus gear for portrait making and never considered the GR - this further shows it's possibilities and versatility. Although I have seen some excellent examples of urban/street photography using the GR and Lightpix Labs Q20ii together, I have used my Olympus OM-D E-M5 II with a small off camera flash in street photography, and it can be a lot of fun. The Olympus has an easy to use built-in RC (remote control) mode. The Ricoh GR of course has a leaf shutter and you can use very high shutter speed combined with open aperture for great effects. I think I need the Lightpix Labs Q20ii :-) haha

      Thanks Alex! When I purchased the flash I did have a moment of reflection wondering if I should spend so much on a manual flash, but as you see, it's really a fun and convenient piece of equipment that I now don't regret buying. And I will add, the transmitter gave me absolutely no problems at all, synced up within seconds and never really failed from what I could see. I'm pretty happy with it and will def be using it quite a bit I think!

    Great video. I am almost convinced to buy one, plus the flash. Have been close to pulling the trigger many times. I like knowing that the crop works so well, perhaps as well as cropping in post???

    • @DozierGraphic
      @DozierGraphic  Před 3 lety

      Hi Robert! The 'in camera' crop is the exact same thing as cropping in post. You do lose pixels. I forget the actual count, but the full shot is 24mp, and doing the crop cuts it down to 16 and 10mp I believe for the 35-50 crop. I don't let that bother me, pixels don't mean much unless you're printing large prints. Anything social media is fine with over 10mp (I dare anyone to notice any difference) lol But I vote for you to pull that trigger my friend! I don't sell these, but I highly recommend grabbing one if you're considering. You may prefer the new 40mm lens on the IIIx though if you're looking for a lot of portrait work. Thanks again for watching!

      @@DozierGraphic Thank you, and I look forward to viewing your other videos. I do a lot of portraits with a 16MP X-Pro1, and even with a 12MP Olympus, and they look great. When they do not look good, it's due to operator error. Anyway, I am not used to thinking of portraits with a 28mm wide perspective and crop. I usually use a much narrower field of view. Still, I like the idea of a pocket cam for landscapes. I think I will wait to find out more about the new X version with 40mm. If I am going to beg the wife for $1000, I better be certain. (PS: It would help if I could go into a shop and hold one, but no one carries Ricoh near me.) Take care, and thanks again for the nice and informative response.

    Thanks for a great watch for a Sunday morning and not a face mask in sight. Looking forward to your settings video. Do you ever dabble in macro?

    • @DozierGraphic
      @DozierGraphic  Před 4 lety +1

      Yes, I have dabbled with the Macro setting, but not until I got the Ricoh. It's not a big fascination of mine currently, but it does a great job with Macro! I think I shot a few Macro in the second video with the abandoned schoolhouse, but not with any major time put into it. I'm looking forward to the settings video also, and hope I didn't over-promise when I said 'definitive' settings video lol we'll see how comprehensive it is when it's ready! Thanks again gainem! Always appreciated!

      @@DozierGraphic I saw the one. Years ago I had a Sony nex 5 with a macro lens. Just getting that band of focus right where you want it was a challenge, especially on insects when pushing the limit. My white whale is to get a clear and relevant reflection from my dogs eye. Best I've achieved is a reflection of me with my tongue hanging out in concentration. After about 5 shots the dog looses interest and starts giving me weird looks. I think he thinks I'm trying to digitally capture his soul.

  • @delukxy

    Snap focus would be useful here. If you have updated the firmware you can use your thumb to touch and snap where you want the focus point to be as you are using your other hand for the flash. A few pics here didn't quite hit focus. The little flash is excellent. Being hand held it will usually be lighting from the left but you can park it somewhere or have it on the tripod as mentioned.

    • @DozierGraphic
      @DozierGraphic  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks for the suggestions Deluk. I wasn't really equipped to walk around some of the very narrow trails we were on with yet another tripod/light pole, so that would have been very cumbersome. The touch snap focus doesn't really add any convenience in a mobile/walking situation for me. I would either have to have two hands free, which makes no sense given it's easier to reach the shutter button with one finger/one hand, as opposed to having to hold the camera in a way that allowed for use of two hands. Defeats the purpose of having such a small, compact camera. I see the touch snap focus useful in sitting situations, or situations where you are standing next to people, sitting across from the on a bus, etc and want to be stealthy. Otherwise, I prefer to use the good old fashioned shutter button. Feels more like I'm actually 'taking the picture.' Don't get me wrong, the touch snap is great and will be useful, just not in a walking/roaming environment for me. Thanks again my friend - glad you spent the time to watch the video! I'll look forward to more discussion with you in the future!

    That was a fun video! It looks like you might have had an easier time with the flash on the tripod as you were mostly shooting handheld. The description of the flash seems to indicate it can be tripod mounted, can you confirm if you can mount it on a tripod? Keep it up!

    • @DozierGraphic
      @DozierGraphic  Před 3 lety

      Correct, you lose pixel and quality, but it's no different than cropping in Lightroom. Not something that I would use a lot, but was fun to play with. And could come in handy for documenting something on the fly, but not able to get close.

      Thanks Timothy! Keep yours going as well! The one thing I didn't have to worry about too much with Eileen is that the 28mm 'can' distort the face a bit, so be careful of that when shooting subjects with 'round' faces and strong opinions LOL!
