    hung pictures of patron saints up on my wall to remind me that i am a fool- tell me where i came from, what i will always be: just a spoiled little kid who went to catholic school. when i am dead i won’t join their ranks, because they are both holy and free, and i’m in ohio, satanic and chained up, and until the end, that’s how it’ll be. i said make me love myself so that i might love you. don’t make me a liar, because i swear to god, when i said it i thought it was true. saint calvin told me not to worry about you, but he’s got his own things to deal with. there’s really just one thing that we have in common. neither of us will be missed. a saint bernard sits at the top of the driveway. you always said how you loved dogs. i don’t know if i count, but i’m trying my best when i’m howling and barking these songs.

      I never understood 4/4, 3/4 and stuff like that because I'm dumb when it comes to music, but if I could take a guess it's the seconds of the beat? Like "Hung pictures (1 2 3) of patron (1 2 3) saints up on (1 2 3) my wall (1 2 3)"?

    The song sounds like it comes from an emotionally unstable man who was abused by the religion was everyone around to him. The Saints are considered "Holy and free" and himself or another call this one child "satanic and chained up. He has to devote much of his time to the Jesus and wanting the son of god to not turn his back on him and making him a lair." This man also come to a conclusion, in the end, life is meaningless and "won't be missed."

    • @Tyway
      @Tyway Před 5 lety +128

      I don't think religion plays into this, I think the saints are people in his life that did much better than him, maybe his father, but they aren't around anymore and he knows he'll never quite stack up to them. Satanic and chained up, he's fucked up in the past and for that reason he's tied down to where he lives now, maybe he just never got around to leaving where he is and it's too late for him to start a life of his own. Most of my friends from my hometown drank, smoked and partied then got "chained up" to that town after highschool.

    I kind of wanted to know what the significance of St. Calvin/John Calvin, and it turns out he is an apologetic writer who began his own branch of Catholicism, Calvinism. Calvinism focuses heavily on predestination and absolute sovereignty, so what it basically states is that all things are willed and planned by god and there is no work around lest you risk eternal damnation. I think that this song is about a Catholic Christian guy who was indoctrinated into Calvinism in particular, and is lamenting on how he was always destined to lead a messed up life, possibly up to the moment he's on his death bed.
    "A Saint Bernard sits at the top of the driveway' could be a reference to Bernard of Clairvaux and the belief that monks and nuns have a special reserved place in heaven, however it could also be a reference to the breed, and how dogs are obsessively loyal to their owners if they have "treats", in this case a perceived salvation, and the last line is referring to the subject trying to make up for how he supposedly sinned during his life. "You" could be God, Jesus, or the Church in the last stanza, but in the middle stanza
    "I said make me love myself so I might love you
    don’t make me a liar,
    because i swear to god,
    when i said it i thought it was true.
    saint calvin told me not to worry about you,
    but he’s got his own things to deal with.
    there’s really just one thing that we have in common.
    neither of us will be missed."
    "You" feels like it shifts meanings back and forth. "make me love myself so I might love you'' seems like and inversion of the Catholic, beatitude heavy idea of humbling yourself so god could love you, lining up with the final stanza, or to go even further with the inversion, maybe "you" is a loved one, inherently mortal and opposed to immortal things like god. Maybe what he's "praying" for in the middle stanza is what has cursed him in the first, wanting to enjoy life without worry or guilt or the bad hand he was given, and this song goes in reverse. Final stanza, indoctrination into the church, second stanza, listing "earthly desires" he wants and perhaps pursues, first stanza, penance and regret. From this point of view you could either see the meaning being regret of reckless actions despite what you were told, being cut off from a proper experience of life by upbringing and how that weighs on your mind throughout adulthood, or how religious institutions have strayed from "God's" original intent, if "you" simultaneously represents god and loved ones as if they are one in the same, which is probably one of the few happy things to be parsed from this song.

      Five years late but I wanted to know more about the St Bernard connection, I think this is it as it fits with the theme of the song. In a sermon St Bernard of Clairvaux is quoted as saying (in latin) "He who loves me, loves my dog". Which apparently made the saying more popular (though he didn't coin it). The full quote here: “The holy angels…love us, in fact, because Jesus Christ loved us ... ... It is said truly in a common proverb: who loves me, also loves my dog…We are the little dogs of the Lord…yes, like small dogs that want to feed on the crumbs that fall from the table of our masters.”
      I see a sort of thematic rhythm in the song. First he states how irredeemable he is, a confession of sin, then a 180° begging for gods love (albeit in an incorrect manner according to the doctrine), but then again back to lamentation in referencing Calvin he is grappling with the possibility that it is God's will that he is not be loved, what's the point in fighting it? Then in the last verse referencing St Bernard it is a reflection of the verse before last, that even if he can not be a good righteous christian even if he is predestined to be a lowly barking dog, he might be loved if he is loyal, but again it isn't clear who he is talking to... In the St Bernard Quote he is already referencing mankind as dogs and that they are loved by their master, God. So perhaps it is another plea for love while accepting his place as a lowly barking dog? Though I almost want to interpret it being that in the last verse he is no longer begging for God's love but for his fellow Man's, that if he is God's dog, that "He who loves god, loves his dog", that he has God's love but that it does not actually solve his material problems on earth. Idk its a good song.
      (Also St Bernards (the dogs) are not named after this St Bernard but a different guy, St Bernard of Menthon who set up a hostel in the alps to assist pilgrims through a dangerous pass that later also had dogs)

    As a latina, religion and catholic images have always been a part of my childhood. I grew up in a house filled with saints, I saw my abuela praying with her rosary. As a lesbian, though, I have always been conflicted with God and their message. I really wanted to love God, but I have been afraid for so many years of what they might think of me. Anyways this song is...really good. It really captures my inner conflict. I don't know what the band intended the meaning to be, but I found a special meaning for it. Thank you.
    Oh and also, today my views on God and what they are and what they would think of me are not as troubling as they were years a go. I'm Okay lmao

    • @mirandasears8260
      @mirandasears8260 Před 4 lety +37

      I wouldnt worry too much about your being a lesbian meaning god doesnt love you dear. Remember that we will never know what jesus truly spoke because everything we based the bible on was one, things all written almost 200 years after his death, and 2) the king james version had many parts taken out of it and parts not real, written in, to fit how king james wanted the people to act. So for all we know god could be totally ok with your beliefs and lifestyle and we wont really know til we get there. The most you can do is be who you are inside and follow the golden rule of do unto others as you would wish others to do unto you. Because if you denied yourself a lesbian then that would be bearing false witness and that too is breaking the lords command. So just do the best you can love, at all you do. And then you will be far ahead of most of the world. Sending love to you. Miranda.

      I'm so glad i don't relate to this song anymore, but i can associate it with a very dark moment in my life,
      (vent? warning) i had just transfered from a catholic school were i studied from 3rd to 9th grades to do high school and i was having a lot of trouble academicaly. This school i'm at has a system of separaring classes by grades and, because of how bad i was doing on tests, i got stuck in the one with the lower grades. I had been a "gifted" kid up until that point so i felt so bad for being there, plus my best (and only at the time) friend was in the class with the best grades, and, during a whole month, she chose to do online classes, so i was all alone at school. The whole situation, plus the bullying from my classmates, definetly didn't help with the depressive episode i developed the year before (this all happened in the begining of 2021), so i just felt like i was damned in a place that felt like hell, chained by invisible forces. Things are much better now, i actually enjoy this school a lot.

    This song hits me really hard...growing up Catholic, I always felt out of place. My church was kind enough, but I never believed. I hated going because I always had to pretend that I did. When my eldest sister tossed the religion, I was so relieved because it showed me that our parents wouldn't judge me for wanting another religion. I'm still looking for one, and it's hard. Being really into spirital stuff, a lot of religons would consider me unholy. I feel like I'm that dog sitting at the top of the driveway, waiting for someone to come.

    Call me stupid I don't care, this is my perspective. I think it's about an abused (possibly sexual) child who went to a Catholic School/Church. He was abused and convinced that it was okay and normal. When he grew up he was broken and wanted revenge. He went looking for him and that's where his story ends. "Saint Bernard sits at the top of the driveway, you always said how you lived dogs" meaning his body can be buried on the top of the churches hill. Death by dogs? The end
