      Hi TMacD, the 990 is a legendary bike which has no replacement in my view, a lot of people i know,might sell their 990, by a 10 or 1190...but eventually miss the 990 so much that they buy another 990 in the end.They are simply put,workhorses in their own class.You have to own one to understand :)

      @@FranksWay Could not agree more! I call my 2008 BedyG for the Big Dumb Grin she puts on my face every time I drift her through the gravel twisties or crawl her up some rocky twin track. In the video I talked about the 990 making use of a dry-sump system and 1190 a wet sump system, the 1190 also uses a dry-sump system :). The 990 engine took just over 3L of oil with filter change.

    This doesnt seem that bad compared to the number of screws I needed to remove to get the tank and panels off my Elefant 900AC. I'm looking at a 950/990 as a possible replacement, perhaps even a 950 Super Enduro.

    I think you should close both fuel tanks to don't have problems with leaking. They are communicating each other.

    Hi Frank. Thanks for sharing. Interesting video even tho I've only got a 990 Superduke. I was wondering how removing the magnet from the oil tank sump will affect engine performance in the long run, as mine always has a tiny bit of ferrous fur on it. Do you reckon it will cause no harm and just end up on the sump plug magnet?

    • @FranksWay
      @FranksWay  Před rokem

      Hi,interesting question,i would certainly want to incorporate a future type of magnet in there.. but hey,use good oil and change every 8000km or so and youre safe...but i will ferl better with a magnet in there somwhere...agreed.

    • @Reshad77
      @Reshad77 Před rokem +1

      @@FranksWay Looking at the oil system diagram in the service manual, anything big would get caught in the oil tank screen before the oil reaches the engine. But the the next step is into the first oil pump, so fine ferrous debris could cause premature wear there. After that it goes thru the oil filter so the rest of the engine should be safe. Def, regular oil changing would be recommended, but perhaps you could attach a small neodymium magnet onto the tip of the screen on the tank side 😉

    About to change the fuel pump filter. Have to remove the tank to do so. This bike is a total pain in the ass to work on. My least desirable bike in that regard.
    I have the drain line for the oil tank so I don't have to do all this.

      I have to change my fuel filter or at least inspect it tomorrow on my 990R, i feel your pain :) . At least with the oil hose it makes oil changes easier. Yes pain in the butt, but i still love the beast 990.Good luck bud.

    Thanks Frank first video I've found showing how to remove everything. I guess some people don't like the drain hose because they change the filter every oil change. What are your thoughts, think its okay to leave to every second change? I was thinking about getting one. The again

    • @FranksWay
      @FranksWay  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Ian, it all depends on the individual, if I think back to the old XR500, that engine had NO oil filter and a simple screen at the bottom, they still run if the timing chain didn't shave the pipe through that delivers oil pressure to the head. The 990 has two screens, one cartridge filter in place. If your maintenance is up to date and you use the correct oil and find no visible shavings in your top reservoir screen on oil changes, I don't see why I should change it every 8000kms. It's a self preference on that one.I make sure the correct oil and plugs are bought within the recommended service intervals, which keeps my bike happy.
