My first rc ❤
For me the Tyco Turbo Hopper was what got me into RC.
If I remember right... it had to be assembled. I was poor and never had one. Which is why I bought a RC car when I could as a grownup.
Yes, it was a kit. You also had to buy a radio, a battery and charger. Most shops would assemble kits for a fee.
Was pretty easy to build .
Same here
Great build , I ran mine hard , it’s all rebuilt now , gleaming on the shelf ….
Nova Fox is great , but no match for the hornet , plus the hornet is way more fun to run !! The nova fox unfortunately is difficult to rebuild if you need the parts , and they’re expensive- not practical . Mine is on the bay now , getting rid
It feels good to live the dreams of my childhood
Your exactly right on the facts here. And as a kid growing up in the 1980's Tamiya RC were out of reach to lots of people. I was very fortunate to have received a Tamiya Fox from my Mum as a birthday present and it was a huge purchase for what really was still only a toy car. My mum and Dad were struggling to pay their house mortgage off as well as feed 3 children and put us through school and my parents worked extremely hard to keep a roof over our head. Here in Australia in around 1987 my Tamiya RC Fox was sold as a bundle including radio and battery nickle metal cadmium, and charger for $500.00 AUD. That was outright outrageous money to pay for a toy car. I'm extremely grateful that my Mum and Dad did this for me. That car I still own today though it's in serious need of restoration.but it did start my interest in RC cars. I now own quite a collection of RC cars and I'm not married or even employed. Didn't work anywhere near as hard as my parents and haven't done so good for myself in life either. But like a spoilt young brat I can't get enough of RC cars. I might have some form of mental health issues too.
This is a great story please bring that car back to life and document it
I had a Hornet, then I got 6 more and loved building, re-building and modifying them. Went to clubs and raced. Then I became a mechanic and now a truck driver. I'm getting a General Lee for my 50th.....
And still you don't realise that the full sized version of this buggy was over 1000kg.
One tenth of 1000kg is 100kg.
You never realised you were supposed to ADD SOME WEIGHT TO THE BUGGY.
@@Gma7788 what do you mean.add weight to the Hornet RC car? Why to make it truly 1/10 scale. That's just stupid man it was from a time early in the history of RC cars so no it wasn't truly 100% to scale but what about modern day RC cars and trucks from 2023 are they 1/10scale including the weight of the real vehicle? NO.👍
@@JimBoBJames-no5dbIm Jim Bob too. 😂 James Robert
@@Gma7788 to made i truly 1/10 scale weght y have to divide by 10³ and i would be more like 1Kg and not 100Kg
@@Gma7788 doesn't realize 1/10th means scale and not, putting a real car in a shrink ray
My local has an 86’ still in the cellophane. Sweet looking ride that aged well.
Geez how much do they want for it?
I had a hornet and loved it, took suspension parts for the Lunch Box / Midnight Pumpkin, made a truck out of it ,with monster truck tires.
My first hobby grade rc car, i loved that thing.
Mine was the grasshopper..good Ole days, way before lipos..😂
@@Jayski2 hell yeah. I used to take battery cells and solder them together to make bigger batteries, destroyed a lot of speed controllers. I actually still have an original aluminum chassis rc10.
Tamiya, Bringing more people Into the hobby so it'll grow and make more opportunities for the future. Genius.
My second RC vehicle was a Tamiya Lunchbox in kit form. I was so excited that I stayed awake all night and finished building it at about 5am so I charged a NiCad and went blasting around the backyard yard for 5 minutes at 6am then had breakfast early to take it to my rich cousin who had a 4WD buggy that I don't remember the make and model of.
I had the radio shack “white tiger” I loved that thing so much 🤘
My first RC car that I paid for with my first job as a garage attendant was a Hornet package deal with charger and 3 NiCad battery packs.
I remember recieving a Tyco turbo Hopper for Christmas and it was almost unbelievably fast. I remember it being faster than the Radio Shack Golden Arrow!
@lafayette- yea i had the black one. It could zap the 8 AA batteries in around 20-45 minutes if i remember correctly.
I had the Subaru brat and I was invited to the ROAR NATIONALS IN CALIFORNIA IN 1984 😊
I had one in 1985. I put the black motor in it early 1986 and it was a great car. No complaints.
I almost bought the Marui Hunter but decided to get The Hornet.
$135 in Australia (kit only).
I just found a grasshopper at a yard sale for $5. Never saw them before that
Bro that's a crazy steal I'll keep my eyes out for one
It was what I could afford and it was cool The Tamiya Hornet!!!
I had a couple radio shack RC's that looked like that.
Shout out to the Turbo Hopper! Ha!!! The Aero Turbo Hopper to be exact. Had the orange and black one. Shit was awesome.
My first car.i can't get into rtr's it's helped the hobby grow and I guess I'm thankful for that
Used to push my son's stroller with mine. Lol. And he still has it. Not the stroller. The Hornet. And the RC 10 cost so much. But i still have that one as well.
Had a 'Hopper, and all it did was make me want a 'Lunchbox 🚚 🎮
I’m yet to get a lunchbox!
@@beyondRC after a few years of trials and experiments, the humble 'Lunchie by Tamiya is BY FAR the best RC on the market for lazy dog walkers!!!!!!
🚚 ⬅️ 🐕 🎮 🚶♂️
Dunno if its the smell, the wheelies, the big tyres, or the yellow paint, but hounds just love to chase Vanessa's 'Box 📦 😉
there was rtr crap everywhere but this was hobby grade and you could throw parts at something you built yourself plus repairable. Was mine and many others true beginnings of it all, hands down
I had a lot of fun with mine back in the day, but I wish the hobby shop employee had suggested something else, as I was moving on from the Grasshopper.... which is pretty much the same car (but with slower motor, different tires and body).
Grasshopper Hornet and another one I can't remember.
I did remember the Wild Willy and the Ford pickup.. Black Foot I think.

Vanessa’s Lunchbox
The FROG
My old man bought the frog in 1985 and I used to walk around with it tied to a rope.
Turbo Hopper was our popular model in the 80s.
Had one as a hand me down. An you are right
That was my first rc car. Shortly after, I bought a Kyosho Ultima and raced it for the next two years. Loved my Ultima!
There are a few re-released kyoshos I’ve been thinking about. Each time I’m ready to get one I end up getting something new.
My next was an RC/10 that went thru many changes over the years.
I had the Grasshopper that my father bought me and never let me play with it 😮😢
I had a kangaroo when I was young. I regret now ever getting rid of it. I wish I still had it
Because it was an incredible rc
I had a grashopper! But it was during the 90s. Maybe 96. Isnt it mindblowing, that back in the days products had this long lifespan?
I remembered a friend that had in school he was a good friend but he told me you should come see my RC car! I was like cool can I stay the night at your house? I want to see it! That weekend it was just his dad playing with it and we couldn't touch it. Keep your grades up and then maybe.😂
The Grasshopper was a great kit and for those who could spend the extra money the Hornet was a little bit better. Both were fun but I lost every race at the local track to the guys who could afford the RC10 and the Tamiya Fox.
My pops got me one when I was a teenager
Radio Shack had affordable and fast r/c buggys , the golden arrow and the red arrow and they were fast.
I had a few of them They were really good.
I still have my grasshopper
They re-released the Hornet, still in kit form. Couldn't buy one quick enough. A childhood friend kindly gave me his when I was a kid and then I got the Tamiya Striker (offroad F1 car, weird thing) for Christmas a year later. I was lucky to get the Avante for the Christmas a year after that. Tamiya were awesome back in the day.
Bought an X0-1 a few years back but it comes pre-assembled and is too damn fast to drive, I miss the simpler times.
My very first rc buggy hooked ever since
Bison F10 … was that a car amounts the grasshopper… I had a jet hopper…
That was the best I got… black or red.
Absolutely. The technology (and price) of the hobby, has improved and increased insanely. Just one more RC!
That was my first rc
My first r/c car was the Grasshopper!
Mine cost the same in the 80s as they do now ... but i had to build mine no pre built option then.
Bought the temya striker in 1983 mind you it was a kit back then you had to build it cost me 99.00 was fun till I hit the brick wall full speed 😂😂
My dad had one and it got me into RC. I remember getting my first Tower Hobbies catalog in the mail and combing through it for weeks before I bought a new at the time nitro Duratrax Maximum ST.
I still have mine and rebuilt it, still running.
I still have mine.
My man is the Davd Attenborough of rc!🤣🤣
I had the 4wd Bomerang. I remember Hornet and Grasshopper.
I remember more than you.
That was my second RC car when I was about 14 that’s a hornet I had that same body👌
Tq tamiya for this.
Tamiya status............godly.
This was my very first RC car that I received for my 13th birthday. Everything then was sold as a kit and paid the shop owner an additional $50 to assemble it and paint the body.
I used to dream of owning this for Xmas ,but it was out of our price range back in the 80s
The Best RC car
What a Legend!! ❤
My Very First Car!
Best thing about this was how strong it is.
That was my dream car as a ten yr old. But couldn’t afford it. I’ve made up for it now with over 20 cars , trucks, and buggies 😂
Me too my friend had 1 i drooled over my dad loved me but i remember him saying i pay youre mom too much child support lol ask her thats when i knew when i get married im never getting divorced now i have so many rc cars my wife mite divorce me 😂 at least ill have my cars
@@stevengambles374 I hear that my dude😄. I guess that’s one advantage of being single. I answer to no one. Well maybe the accountant 😂” what! You spent how much on toys?!”
I still have my grasshopper in its original box and spare parts.....also have about 30 double A Radio Shack rechargeable batteries from the 80s and some still charge up🤘🏴☠️I could be wrong buy think it was about 1988 at 13 i got it all, but not for sure anymore
As a kid and later I could not afford one.
It was 149$ when I was a kid. Mind you a tamaiya Egress was $600.
had this as child, in red xD
I want rc car
My old man bought me the boomerang was the only kid on my block to have it still remember it like yestardy thanks dad
I still have my original from the 80’s. Also have a Grasshopper.
I wanted one. Ended up with a Falcon I still have but I'd like a Hornet.
You're easily distracted.
Don't forget to add a few grams in weight.
30 years and you still don't know the full sized version of this buggy weight was over 1000kg.
1 tenth of 1000 is 100
The hornet is supposed to weigh over 100kg.
@@Gma7788 I don't think you meant this as a reply to my comment. You sound mad over a video of an RC car tho🤣🤣
@SkidmoreRC you're very sick.
Get treatment.
Hey I have 1!! It's in pieces in a milk crate but 1 day I'll rebuild it.
Agree with all of that.
Loved my Hornet until my Buddy ran over it on his bmx and snapped it in half.
I genuinely would have given a limb for one of these back in the 80s 😂
Haha
Nice model
I have one of these that I've tried and almost completed but I tried swapping out to use a ubec system but got lost with it and now have no idea what to do. 😢
Remember areo hoppers
They still use the same exact motor 40 years later
I had the clod buster
Nothing to do with this.
Got it when I was 5, wasn't up to snuff
Love my traxxas bandit vxl 🤘
Tamiya was different animal with quicker motor
The rc hobby is not for all the $$$ is high!!
Well said!👊🏼😎
It was the cheapest one you could buy. Cheaper than the grasshopper I believe.
Because there wasn't many options
Cause it was badass
It WAS under the required weight for that buggy.
It's supposed to weigh over 100kg.
Bit it only weighs 2kg.
It's missing at least 98kg.
I'm sat with 9 tamiya cars right now
So you need to add weight to 9 cars now.
The full sized versions weighed over 1000kg.
I had the superchamp, came before this one .... Loved mine... Great memories.... The grasshopper I remember too....
Thanks 🙂
Well I had superman's Cape.
I flew for hours in the sky until the money ran out.
My first proper rc car when I was 10. Happy memories
Nobody believes you.
I have the super hornet upgraded to 2s lipo and brushless motor esc but the same steering servo runs great
It's missing over 100kg in weight.
Realise the full sized version was over 1200kg.
40 years and you still don't realise your buggy is the wrong weight.
@@Gma7788dude the hobby is about having fun. Not full on realism. If you wanted to get technical if a 1/10 goes 20mph then in 1/1 scale it would go 200. Still not realistic, but fun
I had the frog which was basically the same thing just different plastic and stickers
Wrong.
The time limit for that idiotic comment had ended 30 years ago.
I had the grasshopper fun times
.
It was the one I wanted!
No you didn't.
You wanted the frog like everyone else.
Being blacked out, all we can see is the coloured stripes
I found a super fighterel gr on ebays qfter this and just bought it!!!!!
Yuck!
Engine 540S RoudRunner 2 buggi 😅 Batery 7400mAh 60km/h 5 min driving on 1 pak batery 🎉
And foolishly you never added any weight for realistic driving
Cuz tamiya made it!!!! And tamiya and kyosho made eighties rc…
Yep…
No.
The 70's.
Until Team Associated came out with the RC10 and showed the world what garbageTamiya RC buggies were.
They had the rc game but then Traxxas came out and killed it
No.
Rc planes were the boss.
Team Associated destroyed the image of Tamiya RC, not Traxxas.
Now flip it over and show us why it sat in the closet most of the time. 😂
“ add a time RC is incredibly expensive“ it still is bruh 😭
Incredibly expensive for newcomers.. these days cheap rc cars are more accessible for new comers to the hobby
