  • My Buddha Angel in Chengdu
    David Amram, tr. Wang Ping
    Staring at the window
Water dripping on dishes in the sink
    A bike goes by
A young girl sits side saddle on the back
    Looks like Buddha’s angel daughter
Sent from heaven just in black
    She glances up
her dark eyes make the morning cold to life
    suddenly I realize
    from long ago
    this angel was my wife
what if now to tell her
we were married many years ago
that I’d never have left her
if I knew then what I knew now though
waited for what seems a thousand years to see those eyes
    again hoping someday I could
tell her that our love would never end
    never dared to tell then
because of all the love we shared
was more than I could handle
    even though I really cared
    now it’s many lifetimes later
    here in Chengdu 5:00 am
my favorite wife from an earlier life
the sweetest one of all of them
what she told me in her lifetime
our true love would never die
even if I left her, Buddha’s angel will still fly
now she tells me broken hearts will heal themselves in time
that all the pain I caused
now is gone, except for mine
now in Chengdu through the window
    she’s come back again
riding on a backseat of a bicycle
    side saddle with her friend
guess that since she passed me by
only one thing I can do: get myself a new girl
and a bicycle built for two
when in this incarnation I find a brand new bride
maybe I’ll find out this Buddha’s angel riding by my side
    telling wherever we’ve been
    and through whichever life
    and through all our reincarnations
    she’s always been my wife
    now 7 in the morning
Chengdu’s streets are filled with life
I’m still staring at the window
    As the day growing bright
Waiting by the window, need to see my true love’s eyes again
When she rides by on a bicycle
    Side saddle with her friend
Then I’ll tell her that I love her
This time I know what to do
    Waiting by the window
For my Buddha angel in Chengdu

Multimedia, extra-sensory, I enjoyed it very much. The light shines in you, Ping. You brought it together with your dance.

This very moving performance by Wang Ping with David Amram and her beautiful translation of his compelling and powerful poem of love, My Buddha Angel in Cheng Du, is an exquisite sensory feast of sound, dance, space, color, the spoken word, and photographic images that captivate and bring you into a graceful flowing silence and sense of wonder and amazement as the story and choreography unfolds.
