I’m realizing that Hugh has always had the ability to say everything with just those mesmerizing and expressive eyes of his, no words just one look and you know the feeling he’s trying to convey. I saw him constantly do that in House M.D but this is the first time I saw him doing it in a bit, it was really touching I want to hug Gannet now
Equally, it's fascinating to see how menacing Stephen Fry can be with just a look. I'd love to see him do a really tough psychological thriller or horror film. I think he could a play a psychopath really well.
@@snowysnowyriver oh yes, he would be awesome playing a psychopath because he has that calming voice that can be quite distracting to believe he's the bad guy
This was made back when people didn't just accept mass layoffs, before they'd become normal. Today it seems strange to hear someone say they expect to work for a firm their entire life.
Hugh can act the obnoxious agressor as well as the innocent passive fool very convincingly. I felt sorry for him, even more so bc he kept being polite and understanding while taking all that.
My boss just asked me into an alley ,told me thats it,you have no council job,"its nothing personal",and shook my hand, and left me standing. Nice one Mr Jones. Thanks again.
Always loved these two, and I like this sketch (the secretary and floor wordplay was genius), nevertheless this was also quite sad. Surely it was intentional (Hugh Laurie's performance is key here) still...I laughed but I left with more sadness

Here in the United States, at that time period, it still would've put him below the poverty line. I can't imagine he'd have been doing particularly well on that salary at the time, either.
Just checked with the 'Historical UK inflation calculator' (inflation.stephenmorley.org/) : 1 pound in 1989 is equivalent to 2.46 pound now, so that makes a salary of (appr.) 18450 pound now.
You poor sods. A lifetime of cheap humour has you all looking for the punchline, blind to the subtle humour perforating the dialogue. (Intended to sound pretentious, but really, it's true.)
This wasn't funny, there's a much better version in which Laurie happens to be the HR manager and where Fry tries desperately to fire Laurie who happens to be the HR manager.
+Daniel Elford Humans give a shit. Why do you seriously think people care about it? Because we're all playing at something? Humans care about looks, just instinct, no need to get all up in arms about it.
Honestly though, you do realise this is the youtube "comment" section, not the CZcams "review" section, right? If people's only contribution is vapid, what's it to you? Besides, young Stephen is so VERY dashing, it would be a crime NOT to mention it.
It is a waste of comment space, for sure. Then again, the people so obsessed with how attractive these two were in the past likely wouldn't bother commenting otherwise if they passed up talking about it.
I... I don't get it... was this supposed to be funny? I love Fry and Laurie but I was expecting some kind of actual... event, rather than just a guy getting fired
And that is part of the routine. There is nothing funny about being fired and people who fire people often enjoy it too much and don't care at all what this will mean to the person they are firing. It is also pointing out that staff costs may look huge at the macro level but on the micro most people are not really paid that much. It is also having a go at the zeitgeist of glorying in mass layoffs ... unfortunately that continues to this day.
Gosh, I actually felt sorry for poor Gannet :-(
i was thinking the same thing

That's one HOT Stephen Fry!! And poor Hugh, he looks so sad and cute I just want to give him a hug!
It’s weird because Stephen looks young but sounds exactly the same.
@@venusianblivet9518 He's also very skinny here.
And then a few years later he fired terry
Actually Terry had to fire himself 😂
Carol was still there though
terreñcé‽
In series 3 I think.

colibri1 although today you can't make someone redundant without a decent package, especially after 17 years at the company
I was wondering where the joke was.
Hugh can act the obnoxious agressor as well as the innocent passive fool very convincingly. I felt sorry for him, even more so bc he kept being polite and understanding while taking all that.
Wow, I felt really bad for Gannet in this one
Don’t feel too sorry for Gannet! He went on to a successful second career, as part of the comedy duo “Fry and Laurie”.
He retrained as a doctor
My god such a young Steven Fry!
"She's the best secretary I have ever had on this Floor..." :-D
There are at least two ways to interpret that line. I wonder if that ambiguity is deliberate.
@@Xezlec No ambiguity. He could have just said best secretary ever had, but he added "on the floor."
@@haru100 The ambiguity is "Best secretary I've ever had [while working] on this floor" versus "Best secretary I've ever had [sex with] on this floor"
Reminds me a bit of General Melchett having Captain Darling send off to the front.
Yeah, that was a really bummer scene too
And a sketch "Firing' from 'A bit of Fry and Laurie'.
My boss just asked me into an alley ,told me thats it,you have no council job,"its nothing personal",and shook my hand, and left me standing. Nice one Mr Jones. Thanks again.
Aww Hugh and his baby blue eyes :) I don't agree with those who say he wasn't sexy back then.
Who says such drivel? Hugh was born sexy.
Aww HUGH!!! It's the 'Please-stop-hitting-me' face!
How I do love Fry and Laurie :)
"Since you're not too popular around here we didn't raise anything" lol
"Well, I won't mince around the bush any longer...." XD

How young they were ♡
Mid to late 20s I belive
'Due back in a fortnight'.....brilliant.
Aww how can u fire him look how sweet hughs little face is when hes sad and his blue eyes AWW x
This proves that 1 plus 1 can make 10 😊👍🏻🤝🏻🇳🇱
This is so sad
"I won't mince around the bush"
Shades of Python, they do office-based so well.
Oh, poor Hugh. How I miss cruel Stephen!
They are so young!
Thanks for the video!
Naaw.. they are so young
This feels so Kids In The Hall. I could totally picture Dave and Kevin in Stephen's and Hugh's respective rolls.
Tim Davidson Role. Not rolls.
+GoteeDevotee Roles, not role.
So young!
"somewhat harsh"
poor Gannet had his birthday that day
the way he says 'Gannet' every time
Before the invention of zero hours contracts...
Super.
Poor man.
Hugh Laurie is a very talented man.
Why is this so sad 🥺
That... that's not humour. That's a reality. Sure, he's unlikely to leave without a pay but still... kinda sad.
Industrial Carbofluids? Shirley that is Bastards Incorporated.
God, gorgeous young, Laurie...I mean he was soooo beautiful. Yummy, Hugh!
Sexist objectification, how awful
"... My board has asked me to reduce my staff by 50% ..." what if that firm wasn't a tyrannical institution and employees had a say in the matter ...?
Probably if the firm was struggling the same thing
"The union has decided you'll be made redundant because you don't pay them a member's fee."

Strange, this only feels like half the sketch. No closure.
7,500 pounds? Am I missing something here? Were wages a lot lower in those days?
7500 pounds in 1989 was worth the equivelent of £13000 today
Silly Ellie probably more!
Here in the United States, at that time period, it still would've put him below the poverty line. I can't imagine he'd have been doing particularly well on that salary at the time, either.
In the UK, £13000 today is about minimum wage for a full time job. Low, especially for someone of his age, but not unheard of
Just checked with the 'Historical UK inflation calculator' (inflation.stephenmorley.org/) : 1 pound in 1989 is equivalent to 2.46 pound now, so that makes a salary of (appr.) 18450 pound now.

Good grief, these comments... can't move for the middle aged estrogen and nostalgia oxytocin
Well isn't hugh laurie devastatingly good looking in this clip.

7.5k a year ???

Did this lead into another scene? As a piece it doesn't have a punchline or resolve in any way.
