I think I made a mistake with my young Bengal eagle owl

  • Hand rearing an Eagle owl is easy enough when you know how to do it, right? Well, in basic terms yes but it does become more difficult when you're incredibly busy and hand rearing and training different birds all the time.
It appears that the new Benga eagle owl has not turned out as good as Ryan hoped - it could be in part the birds' natural personality. It could also be the venues that the owl grew up in - were most of them too quiet?

The Zoo in Minneapolis, MN lost a Eagle Owl from a flying display . It flew into the tiger enclosure and was consumed by a tiger . Reported in People
Magazine . They are reviewing procedures. Very sad indeed .

    Wild animals belong in nature.

I know with dogs, have no idea with owls, is that they go through varioius stages of development. I took my two Yorkshire Terriors, age 9 weeks, to a public event. It was for a school and the kids loved the dogs and wanted to pet them. At the time, I had no idea, but for a small animal, being petted on the head, the commotion etc. was very traumatizing. If I could do it agian, I would not. I bet owls have the same in terms of the times in their lives where they can accept stimulation or not. Yes, you do want them acccommodated to the public, but you don't want their sociality shut down. I'd rather have a happy animal to one that is terrified of being in public events. When you think of it, this is obviously not natural for an owl.

Hi, all our other owls are fine with crowds and busy places. We have had flying shows with 4000+ people before and that hasn't bothered them. This owl is just an exception really

I don’t want to be mean, but owls are not pets, their wild animals, they’re meant to be in the wild. I’m not trying to be mean, I kind of feel bad for owls, they’re just wild animals. But you know.

Depends on context, some owls and raptors cannot be released due to injuries or deformities, so, they are kept as ambassadors. Falconry is also another example and the bond between raptor and human is amazing. Humans need to learn about raptors somehow, and shows and these types of programs are the best way to do that! While your attitude is not a bad one, please be careful with passing judgements. Think of Falco, the eagle owl, from the zoo in NY that was "released" because a person thought he should be "Free" and ended up dying of rodenticide poisoning and other complications by being in an area to which he was not native and several other things.

@@felgate11 I've heard they have had falconry there before. I'd be happy to discuss the idea of providing something there if they are interested.
