  • How to make a colored lip on a wheel that has been plastidipped without having to tape off the lip for each coat.
    To see pics of the finished wheels and with them on my car take a look at my thread on dipyourcar.com. www.dipyourcar....

    This is a great idea, i have access to a laser cutting machine so i could get one of these done in 30 seconds.
    Adding studs or some kind of rods that go through the wheel to help it stay centered and always in the middle would be helpful as well.

    Interesting thoughts on removal. While I'm not sure, I'd think the sanding would probably be more of a help. If I can get the other tests done that I want I may try these ideas out. However with it getting cold out I may not have many new videos until spring. I wish I had a heated garage.
    I just posted up the final results of the wheels on my car at dipyourcar. I put the link in the video description.

    @Randy, for some reason I can't reply directly to your comment since it is linked. The easiest way to find a Dealer is to go to the dipyourcar.com website and click on the DYC Installers link in the upper right. To help here is the link directly to the New Jersey listing of installers (4 of them currently): www.dipyourcar.com/new-jersey.html
    The installers can custom tint the dip to get a closer match to the color you need as well if the current available colors aren't a good match but that obviously will cost more as they may have to tint a gallon of dip versus using spray cans.

    I wish I had a laser cutter! I had though about doing rods or something similar to keep the cover plate set in the proper position but when I saw that I didn't have to remove it in between coats, it wasn't really needed. For wheels where you would have to remove the cover plate in between each coat that would definitely be a necessity.

    Nice. Show results on the car itself, I'd like to see that. I also wondered if you did the 5-6 coats of plastidip + Krylon fusion coats, and then wanted to remove the whole plastidip, if another 2-3 layers of plastidip OVER the krylon gloss would help ease the process of removal? Or if simple wet-sanding to remove the gloss coat would ease up the process. Good vidoes!

    bro you only have to tape once no matter how much coats your doing. you just pull the tape off after the last coat when its still wet. when you put a new coat on it reliquifies the previous coats

    • @SeanVanMeter
      @SeanVanMeter  Před 10 lety

      You have to be doing thin coats in order to accomplish that. I have tried what you have stated and it has caused the dip to pull up.

      obviously when you do a nice thick even last coat like youre supposed to it works.

    • @SeanVanMeter
      @SeanVanMeter  Před 10 lety +1

      It also depends on how many coats you do and how many thick coats you do. Your way is an option. I'm not saying it isn't. It just may not work in all scenarios. This was presented as another way to do this for people that are looking for a different method. Neither method is going to be right for everyone. Choice and different ideas is always good.

    I live on the East Coast (New Jersey) and am trying to find someone to do this for me. I am lettering my truck (started my own business) and want to match the font color on the truck with the border of my rims. Its a unique look and I figure will make my truck pop a lot more. I cant find anyone that can assist me. Im glad I found your video because this is exactly what im trying to do. Do you know where I should go? What types of businesses do this? Thanks

    How many cans of Plastidip did you end up using for all four wheels?

    • @SeanVanMeter
      @SeanVanMeter  Před 10 lety

      4 Cans of the matte black for the wheels. You won't use quite all of them but yo will need that 4th can if you are laying down the proper coats. Probably a couple cans of the Blaze blue since I also did the center slots in blue as well.

    HI Man I have a really hard time to find something circular to mask off the tires since I dont have the equipment to actually take them off the car...and Suggestions? I really needs a 18.5inch wheel cover and 19.5 inch wheel cover. I also already have my wheels dipped in black and I want to add metalizer as a wheel lip decal

    • @SeanVanMeter
      @SeanVanMeter  Před 8 lety

      +K Li I need a little more detail on what you are doing. I'm assuming you are dipping the rims and want to mask the tires (rubber) so it doesn't get dip on it? Correct? Make sure you put plastic trash bag in side the wheel to cover up the brakes/rotors completely. Also make sure the bag does not touch the back of the spokes otherwise the dip will make the bag stick to them.

      @kaiwenli3432 Před 8 lety

      Sean Van Meter Oh no..sorry I was not very clear. I already have my wheels dipped in black but I dont have the tools that you have to make the lip decal. I want to use the violet metalizer to dip the lip, but I dont have the glass cover you have to cover up the center part of the wheel. I cannot use tape because tape will simply drag the original black based dip along with it

      Sean Van Meter so my main concern is where could I get a glass cover or cloth cover like yours..I do not have the sufficient tools to to make them

    • @SeanVanMeter
      @SeanVanMeter  Před 8 lety

      +K Li As long as the black dip is properly applied (5 coats or so), then blue painters tape will not tear the dip and it is easy enough to curve to create the inside edge of the lip (versus when I used electric/vinyl tape to create the outside edge of the black). Before I made the Plexiglas shield I I would use some blue painters tape and some plastic to cover the parts of the wheel that I didn't want sprayed. If you have Dip TopCoat over the black then don't put plastic like tape and drape over it (put a layer of paper first). If the black plastidip was not properly applied and it to thin (or not cured long enough) then it is possible blue painters tape could still tear it.

      +Sean Van Meter If you are looking for that type of cover, you may see if a hardware store could cut you a piece for the diameter you need if you want to go that route. Another option is to use stiff cardboard and cut the diameter by hand.

    What's the other method?

    • @SeanVanMeter
      @SeanVanMeter  Před 10 lety

      Re-taping every 2 or 3 coats depending on how light of coats you put on it. While another person has said that you only have to tape once, I have had inconsistent success with that to the point that I will not rely on it especially with bigger jobs.
