    Shannon: Do you have any debts?
    Conway: I owe some people some apologies.

    I thought after finishing the game the Too Late to Love You scene was going to be in my head over the next couple of days, however I find myself going back to this scene and this song instead. I wasn't even THAT sad for Conway, just bleat and empty, but I think this song really hits home with the emptiness and sparseness of the game itself. Most of the sound in this game is diegetic, and when a moment like this comes, a minimalistic rendition of an old classic in the bleakest part of the game, it just makes the impact much more profound than actually having music all over the game. I just had to write this out somewhere since nobody I know plays the game and I have been going back to this video every couple hours.

    the strangest thing was how Conway was so afraid of being forgotten, but the people who has been on HIS journey with him together gets over the fact so easily that he's gone (except shannon). I felt so sad here.

    I was still distressed about Conway throughout this scene. I felt as though this was his departure song playing in Shannon's mind while she was standing on the platform in the dark, thinking of him.

      The bat sanctuary was so ominous when you heard the electric buzz of the other boat doubling back to follow you, but I spent so much time talking to the operator at the switchboard that when they took him I was completely shocked. What an experience.

      +Brett Anderson I'm having the impression he was reconciled with his dark fate, anticipated it, maybe as an atonement for his addiction and guilt syndrome. At any case I hope Weaver somehow takes care of things in the final act because it would be such a depressing character ending otherwise.

      We don't know, but at the same time, I feel like he made the wrong choice. While dementia is starting to set in for Lys, I feel like Conway still has something to salvage back there. As my-Shannon said, "There's always a choice."

    Shannon trying to connect with the dog while this song played was really gut wrenching.
    And holy shit, I just realized right now that she is wearing Conway's jacket. Thats fucking sad.

    Folk songs from Bedquilt Ramblers are covers of The Monroe Brothers versions (1930's Bill Monroe and his brother)
    . Let me share:
    Act 1: "You've Got to Walk" czcams.com/video/5_BbMjZwCtI/video.html
    Act 2: "Long Journey Home" czcams.com/video/v3mpsorJM2Q/video.html
    Act 3: "What Would You Give" czcams.com/video/364t7YVLj3s/video.html
    Act 4: "This World Is Not My Home" czcams.com/video/xh63oKy36LQ/video.html
    And thank you Ben Babbitt for reminding us these legeds.

      Cool to point people to the Monroe Brothers, but it's kind of misleading to call this song a Monroe Brothers cover. For one thing the Carter Family recorded it before the Monroe Brothers (in 1931 versus 1936 and the Carters called it "Can't feel at home"). For another, it's just a traditional gospel song. Both the Monroes and Carters probably just heard it growing up in church and from friends and family - there is no original, definitive version for them to cover and the song didn't belong to them any more (or any less) than it did to the thousands of people who knew it and sang it before (and after) them.

    Right after this scene I checked the the inventory... and saw the AA keychain on Conway's keys, just about cried.
    I know he's just a fictional character but I hope Conway is well. I've fought that battle against alcoholism too, and it was so cool to see a character that portrayed that struggle well, but also heartbreaking to see him fall again. The bottle brings a "debt" that is never paid off, the more work you put it, the more it demands.

      I feel like Conway lost hope in life. Maybe it's a good thing, maybe not. It seem to me that hope was bringing a pain to him. It's like when a friend drift away, making choice that i don't understand. It seams bad at first but maybe it isn't. Conway feel like a friend but he is a stranger, maybe he has been trying to lose hope for all his life, and finally succeeded. It's better not to think about it, he said he was ok it.

  • @wychwoodmusic
    @wychwoodmusic Před rokem +5

    For anyone who wants to play this at home, chords are:
    D D G D / D D A A7 / D D G D / D D A7 D
    He's using some sort of alternate tuning to play that, to be precise though, and to get those low bass notes. His whole guitar might be down a step (D G D F A D instead of E A D G B E) or he might have just dropped his low bass string from E to D - either one gets my guitar closer to his but doesn't seem quite right, he might also be using some unusual chord voicings.
    Someone else in the comments is calling this a cover of a Monroe Brothers song, but that's misleading. For one thing the Carter Family recorded it before the Monroe Brothers (they called it "Can't feel at home" and recorded in 1931 versus 1936) and for another it's just a traditional gospel song. Both the Monroes and Carters probably just heard it growing up in church and from friends and family - there is no original, definitive version for them to cover.
    Also, Woody Guthrie did a cool rewrite of this song in 1940 about the plight of migrant workers - worth checking it out! (Usually goes under the title "I Ain't Got No Home In This World Anymore").

      I play baritone a lot and I've actually found it works best in baritone tuning, B E A D F# B, that's the closest I've gotten (G / C / D chord shapes)

      Zephaniah Yeo To answer your question, this one was less of a gut punch, more of a very strong, numbing pain. Its a funny story. I got married A WEEK before it released. I went on my honeymoon on the west coast and witnessed the sun fully set on the horizon, an image that reminded me of Equus Oils all the way back in Act I. And then? I waited. I couldn’t put myself to finish it. Part of me wanted to replay it all the way through first and pick up on all of the nuances. But, after discussing it with some friends, I decided to play it like every act before, totally blind and picking up the pieces where we left off. I finished it yesterday. It took about an hour after finishing it to let it sink in, which is what CC is good at, as is evident here in Act IV. When I walk away from Enter the Gungeon, most of the time it’s out of frustration, but I walked away from this one with a calm and quiet reflection of where we are today, here in 2020. I think back on the choices I made in this last Act had I played it right after my honeymoon. I’d share more, but I’ve already turned this into a diatribe.

    I normally hate walking sims, and I don't really remember why I decided to play this game. Even years after, I think about this scene and return to watch it again. The megic realism, the Americana, the feeling of nostalgia and dread. It's something else. There's so many remarkable scenes. This one, the interactive theatre play, the mine trip, the funeral... It's honestly something else.

    maybe this is a strange comparison but bo burnham's That Funny Feeling kind of reminds me of this whole scene. the story about the divers is maybe more nuanced than some of the stuff that gives burnham a "funny feeling," but the divers story gives me a "funny feeling" too. it all comes after conway leaves, and it feels strange that the game would want us to care about much of anything after that, especially not something as silly as a "spaghetti fish." it stings even worse that it seems like Johnny and Ezra are the *only* other characters who even want to acknowledge Conway's absence, much less grieve for him. No wonder Shannon would want to walk away from that scene without even eating anything. Like the scene at the end of Act 3, where the game gives us no option to avoid the act of drinking the top shelf whiskey, here the game does not allow us a choice in moving Shannon to the stairway. We don't need to move her down to the dock--we can put her anywhere as long as it isn't up there with those people. so, like, obviously we're supposed to empathize with shannon since we're right there with her, and i think one of the ways the game emphasizes that is by having us listen to this story about the divers, not just once but twice, and get a "funny feeling" from it. i just think it's interesting, since we could have had that song right after conway left, but instead they decided to play it for us after some inanity about divers and a cool fish that might taste good

    • @sieltan5618
      @sieltan5618 Před 3 měsíci

      I actually think much of what happens in the story is about Conway, but indirectly. The story of the divers and the one night they cooked and cooked and found their moment of glory reflects the trajectory of Conway and so many other characters who can't let go of their past, but it's a more positive spin on it. All they had is still there on the table in plastic. The horse funeral is also about Conway-it's really Conway's funeral. All the songs in the series are about Conway.
