'It's undeniable': Seattle doctor talks about racism in American health care

  • Health care is a big part of American lives. Almost one in every five dollars goes to the health care system, but there is overwhelming evidence that not everyone is treated the same.
Late last year, Dr. Ben Danielson resigned in protest from the Odessa Brown Children’s Clinic at Seattle Children’s Hospital - citing racism.
KING 5's Facing Race team sat down with Danielson to better understand what racism looks like in American health care, and at Seattle Children’s in particular, where he says top leaders should be replaced.
When you ask Danielson if there is racism in health care, he doesn't hesitate. "It's undeniable, irrefutable. The data is there, it's proven and shown. And it's surprising to me that we still have to ask that question," said Danielson.

This is why black doctors & nurses need to run a healthcare organization that’s owned by blacks so that this issue can be taking care of properly.

There is definitely a strong undercurrent of racism in Seattle and the pacific northwest in general. I lived there for years and can attest to this.

It’s very sad but true, I’m mixed race and I’ve experienced this medical racism. I had sutures placed without any anesthesia and told the doctor and the nurse explained that I wasn’t under any anesthesia and that I’m not numb and it hurts and to stop, he refused! Also my mother recently at a hospital, with immune compromised health concerns and vaccinated requested a Covid test, was denied and released without seeing a doctor, discharged as migraine headache patient.

I have health issues but avoid going to the doctor. There are NO culturally competent doctors in Seattle. I’ve been a medical social worker for over 40 years. Several years ago I got sick and was appalled at how white providers treated me. The doctors were the worst! I know what good care looks like and to date it does not exist in Seattle if you are Black.. I’m a bleeder and I had a doctor who wanted to prescribe Coumadin! I’m better off treating myself at home.

White Americans have a history of not wanting to believe/supporting people of color. Tide is changing.

He's not wrong. Here is just one example I can share.
Late last year, a uw nurse was given a promotion, which was then rescinded, the day after she filed a complaint to address racism in the care , or lack there of, for an African American patient, in legitimate pain, being denied medication.

@Larisa 7 it is nice that you as a white person are honest about this because medical racism is actually pervasive. About half of white doctors think that blacks have significantly thicker skin and can withhold more pain.

His privilege doesn't mean he's lying. He has no fundamental reason to lie. And I would argue his privilege should come with responsibility, especially as a doctor, to stand for the vunerable. And seriously. Just because he has those privileges doesn't mean he's not discriminated against. If anything it would make racists more angry. Do you know how racism works???????????
