  • At first, Minecraft doesn't seem like a game filled with lore, but if you dig deep enough you can discover some mysterious features that allude to a greater story. But through all of the strange things in the game, one thing stands out. You, Steve. In your Minecraft world you are so much more powerful than everything else around you, it begs the question, what really are you, and how do you fit into the game's story. What is minecraft steve? And that is the question I wil answer today

This is NOT a series called Minecraft VVSauce where I explore random features of Minecraft. Not Minecraft, but the water rises or Minecraft Manhunt and NOT a more research based series dedicated to over-answering questions you never asked. Instead, this is a mini documentary / theory inspired by the game theorists. In this case an exploration of the lore of Minecraft steve.

It's referred to as Quasi-Lore because it's not a solid established narrative. Death of the Author theory states that if it isn't written, it's subjective and any attempts at giving further context (beyond the pages, or in this case, the screen) is no less speculative than the fans giving attempts at external context.
Meaning those quotes cannot give further cannon to the lore, they can only be considered theories in the same way that any other fan has theories. Until it's officially placed into the content itself.

    @Galimeer5 Před rokem +329

I have two issues with this theory:
    1. Timing. If Steve is resurrected from the moment he initially died, then how has the world changed so much? Presumably, it took a long time for the various structures to fall into ruin, for the builders to become the endermen, for the piglin civilization to rise up in the Nether etc... There has to have been a long, long, _long_ time between the destruction of the builders' civilization and the appearance of Steve given how pristine and untouched the world is when we first arrive. Also, if the wither was the cataclysm that started all of this, where is it? Surely it didn't just disappear. There has to be at least one wither out there still wrecking havoc.
    2. If defeating the enderdragon is the key to Steve's redemption, why can we still respawn after dying, even if the enderdragon is dead? Tangentially, wouldn't it make more sense for the task of redemption to be killing the wither? Why get this completely unrelated space dragon involved?
It's an interesting theory and, if nothing else, would make for a good story, but I don't think it necessarily fits Minecraft

They can't really fly, they just stick to walls and can teleport. If you look on the bottom of a shulker you see a spiral foot which is similar to a lot of sea life like barnacles and muscles that they're clearly based on. Shulkers are a massive mollusk that's somehow adapted to life in the End, and attaches to the walls of end cities just like how real life barnacles attach to the sides of boats and docks. Where they came from and why they're there is a whole other question.

    3. the game continues after you beat the dragon, and you continue to respawn.

I have been thinking about the "Steve question" for months now, and I have come to a much different conclusion (which I will eventually explain in a video of my own). Nonetheless, I always like seeing how others approach the lore of Minecraft. One of the beautiful parts of the game is how it's open to interpretation, and I'm happy I got the chance to see what you think about one of the tougher subjects in Minecraft!

    Three issues:
    1) Endermen still hate you after you free the end.
    2) You can still respawn after freeing the end.
    3) The gods directly say "Now, wake up" implying you're not finished.
While I like this theory, I feel there are better explanations.
To me, Steve is one of those gods, but inside a human body and with limited power.
What are the gods? People playing in creative, people who have the true powers you can get, and as such, are bored. So, to amuse themselves, one of them got turned into a human, one got given the ability to roam this world with finite power. But there's nothing fun on seeing someone fail, the same way you can still play football after a defeat, so they made him immortal so he could try again and again.
But being creatures who were used to be all powerful, most of them just gave up, they didn't wanna try anymore because there was no reason to do so if it was going to be THAT hard. And so, we get Steve. He wanted to try, he wanted to see what happens, he was new for this people and he wanted to be new for this world.
The gamemode is called "Survival" for a reason.
He thrived, he found new things to amuse himself. Now, as another creature of this plane, he could experience the world around him. Endermen hate you not because you're the cause of the dragon slaving them, but because you're not supposed to be here, they hate endermite precisely for the same reason. As such, even if you free the end, they'll still hate you. As such, even if you free the end, you'll still respawn because there's more things to do in order to amuse yourself.
You're a god, you're just playing. You played well, and while going back to a new body, you hear your mates praise you for your efforts. They know who you are, what made you, what are you inside of. You're not in a real world, this is just something they created to amuse themselves. You're inside a machine, dreaming.
And the dream was long, and the dream was beautiful. And for your dream they created the world around you, the computer in which said world is inside. The person moving you around and the people before them. Steve is you, you're Steve, you're one of those gods playing the Steve's role.
    You're the player.
"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover."
    - Unknown.

I like the idea of Steve being respawned and tested by higher, powerful god-like entities. Another thing I thought of while viewing your video and processing the theory was the kind-of resemblance with the choice of world difficulty while starting a new world and Undertale, where our actions lead to different routes (good ending, bad ending etc..). I think the world might be a crafted dimension by said superior entities to serve as kind of Limbo, where the player is given a second chance to redeem themselves and their misconduct that led to the extinction of the ancient builders in their past life. That would explain why there is a canon name for the player (Steve being part of the ancient builders) and why it is easy for us to change our "identities" (being the username, the skin..) - because it would be a "wish" of rebirth granted by higher-ups. Though, the hardcore mode would make a lot of sense being the real canon route, since based on the End Poem, we do serve as a "player" - an entity being toyed by god-like creators. However, the part "this player" in the End Poem makes me wonder if the universe might multidimensional, given that we are designated and there might be another one like the player and MC and variations of the game such as MC Dungeons are connected altogether.. Then, would that mean that Steve isn't the only one at fault for destroying the race of ancient builders.. Another thing that would confirm this thought would be the interactive Minecraft game where the player has the purpose to beat the Wither Storm that they spawned "on accident" and is accompagnied by other people.

I always figured that Steve was something created by the ancient builders. Something that coudn't die, and their first successful experiment for immortality. Then, confident in their abilities, they made the wither, and it's all history. Or maybe Steve was taking a long time to complete the process of being brought to life and they got impatient, and that's why we spawn to long after the events take place, because we just finished gaining life.
I dunno, with the 1.19 update and the echo shards and the recovery compass, it gets all wierd and complicated.

i have a small theory to fix that up. agreeing with another comment that the respawning is a "curse" because of Steve's actions, the gods realized that they made a fatal mistake, and Steve actually liked it. Because of the embarrassment, they just rolled with it, and grew attached and liked the player. The hardcore timeline however, the gods didn't have embarrassment, because it's hardcore, and they're in "hardmode", becoming less embarrassed. And thus, they fix their fatal mistake, and made things much harder for Steve, to haunt him even more.

    • @DarkHero-nn9xr
      @DarkHero-nn9xr Před 2 lety +6

Personally, I believe that Steve can't respawn, and that respawning in normal gameplay is simply game mechanics for the sake of a game. The reason why we respawn at beds is again, simply game mechanics rather than actual lore. I actually believe Steve himself to be a remnant of the builder race however, a smaller segment that were tasked with removing the eyes of ender from the end portal frames (With the exceedingly rare full portals being from builders who failed to do so in time) in order to close off the end from the infection. Tasked with that and that alone, with so little of their own population, they eventually fled the fortresses, fleeing into the wilderness hoping to outpace the zombies and skeletons. Steve (and Alex) being one the last surviving builders remaining, take it onto themselves to try and reclaim the world.
As to why Steve's attacked on sight by the endermen, I actually believe Steve's linage gave the secrets to creating the totems of undying to the Illagers, who in turn, used what they learned to make something new: The Zombies. Commanding them to attack and kill the Ancient Builder Race, and creating a chain of actions that eventually lead the builders into the end, they gave Steve's people a punishment, to join the endless hoards while the remaining builders escaped into the last dimension: The End. Sealing them away from the overworld.
In short: Respawning is simply a game mechanic to make the game easier, same with bonus chests. Steve himself isn't aware of any deities watching him till the end, or of his own immortality as in the canon of minecraft, he isn't. Steve's race are a disgraced population of the Ancient Builders who caused the zombie outbreak to begin with.

Theory: The gods manipulate Evokers to create Totems of Undying for Steve.
Think about it. Evokers possess items that can cheat death, but never use them? And we know that it is possible for these Illager species to hold things like Axes and crossbows- and even Evokers spread their arms apart to summon Vexes and Fangs. I think the gods are tasking the illagers as challenges for Steve. The Illagers only perform coordinated raids on villages when they know Steve is there (somehow). They certainly have beef with the Villagers but seem to only act when Steve is around. It’s a pretty loose theory but it kinda fits the idea that these gods are setting things up in favor of Steve.

    Lemme give you my theory,
Before the builder's exinction, they know it was happening, their population was getting thinner and theu could't make new builders (babies or otherwise), so they recruited witches or did the magic themselves to create something that would save them from death and extinction, the first iteration was healing potions then the totem of undying, it worked but wasn't perfect, at some point, a witch realized that escaping death by regenerating the body may not be the answer and decided to experiment with soul transfer, the result was a curse that reconstructs a new body and transfers the soul to it, the soul tried to go back to the last place it was free in, the place of birth or the place of sleeping. Although this worked, there wasn't enough time left to save everyone, you, the first successful experiment was lost to them when you died the first time as they didn't know where you were born, the last ones ended up dying and you remained, forever cursed by the cicle of life and death, living in loneliness, trying to find a meaning to your lives.

there is still at least 2 pieces we need to fit to solve Steves mystery :
    1. Steve does not remember from the past when spawned. Is he having amnesia? Then why he keep his memory after the first spawn? But since Steve initialy spawn with nothing in the middle of nowhere, it is clearly his first spawn. Otherwise, he would have spawn near his stuff. Or at least eventually find it back. Also, sometimes he spawn near a chest. This chest feels like saying "good luck on your journey". It could mean that someone put Steve intentionally into the world.
    2. Beds. Only villagers and players sleeps in bed. But players have a weird connection to sleep. Phantoms, bed explosion in nether and the end, respawning near bed... There is more to the bed and the player then previously said. It is just wool and wood, why it has such an explosive behaviour in some dimensions? Why villagers are not hunted by phantoms or can't respawn in their bed?

this is an interesting idea, and definitely explains a lot of unexplainable stuff that shouldnt make sense, such as the wither achievement, the end achievement, and the enderman's rage and reluctance for us to look in their eyes.Freeing our ancestors and having the ability to respawn help us with that would also be sensible.
However, the ability to respawn and carry large amounts of heavy blocks carry on throughout the entire game, unless your in hardcore where you can never respawn regardless of before or after you defeat the dragon.
So why do we have the ability to respawn and carry large amounts of blocks even when we have finished all our tasks?if the gods of the world are powerful enough to give us these abilities, surely they are able to take away those powers as soon as possible?

Here's my own thought: What if the ancient builders didn't get chased into the End by the Wither, but instead they simply gave up? They got bored, stopped playing, and now we show up, long after their builds have deteriorated. Or alternatively, what if the Minecraft world literally cannot exist without a player? The "history" of the world might have been generated along with the world itself, at the same time you first spawned in. Just some potential ideas for your next world's lore.

I have a crazy theory that explains some of Minecraft's peculiarities: In the old days, the world was full of Ender Dragons in the overworld (PLEASE DON'T END READING HERE CALLING ME CRAZY) these dragons were much bigger and stronger than we know, since they had a lot of animals to eat. Leading to the mass extinction of cows, chickens, pigs, ETC. This led to the immigration of a slightly superior group, a group of cows (yes, cows. I don't want to push the envelope and say that Steve descended from intelligent cows... But who knows?) This group immigrated to one island, specifically the mushroom island. The group of cows would have arrived at the place, where it was safe, and then the group would have evolved... Or not? High exposure to fungi for generations caused the mushrooms to spread through the cows' bodies like plagues, even taking over their minds, and well... All knowledge was lost. While all this was going on, a creature, more powerful than the Wither Storm, somehow arrived in the world, at which point, the society of the steves already existed. The creature decimated everything around it, killing all but one Ender Dragon, which somehow escaped to the End and grew smaller with the scarcity of food.... Before starving to death from killing almost every being, the creature pursued the steves, and one of them managed to register it... On disc 11. Eventually, the bones of the massive ender dragons became the known skeletons.
-Please don't call me crazy for my theory full of holes, and if I wrote something wrong, it's because I use Google translator to communicate.

(Typing this at the start idk if he gets into this): I think Steve is a type of builder but one that was locked away in a suspended dimension called Disconnect. You have the builders that lived on the surface, the old kind that made the trail and ocean ruins, their descendants the golden age builders that spawned off the villagers then illagers, and the golden age builders forced to contend with war, zombie plague, and the wither. You have those who traveled below into the deepest depths and died, those who traveled to the nether and were either driven out or transformed into blazes, and those who went to the end and painfully transformed into the endermen. I think that in a last ditch attempt to spare us, a group of builders locked us within a parallel space to survive as pure mind. However, we escaped. And we reconnect to this mind scape briefly when we enter the end portal and see the conversation between to other concerned builders. This also explains multiplayer, are we living in a simulation meaning we cannot truly die, or have others of our kind awoken to enjoy the ashes of the builders

I think the two Minecraft gods are Steves that did not press the Respawn button when they died because they got tired of their Minecraft life, which they keep on respawning.
And they went in to the game mode ‘spectator’.
That’s why they can watch us but can’t help us even they want us to free the end.
