  • With introduction of synthetic engine for gearless scooters like Honda Activa, TVS Jupiter, Ntorq, Suzuki Access and other scooters we get options like Castrol Power1 Ultimate Scooter and Motul Scooter Power le. The Castrol Power1 Ultimate Scooter and Motul Scooter Power le both are offered in 5W-40 grade. This time we used the Castrol Power1 Ultimate scooter 5W-40 in Honda Activa. After using the Power1 ultimate scooter for 2500km the used engine oil was lab test for both physical and chemical properties. Lab test revealed a lot of stuff about Power1 ultimate 5W-40 scooter including Kinematic viscosity at 40°C and 100°C. The TBN value were also tested for the used Power1 ultimate scooter. The ICP reports gave out the wear metal presence, contaminants and additive elements present in the Castrol Power1 Ultimate Scooter 5W-40.

    Hi, I am curious about using Castrol Activ 20w40 in Apache.
    Compared to any 10w40, 20w40 will create more oil pressure, due to which smoothness can further increase.
    However, from piston side, it is lighter than any 10w40 whereas heavier than any 10w30.
    Only it may create cold start problem during winter, but there should not be any problem in summer.
    Although earlier versions of Castrol Activ were mineral, but newer versions of Castrol Activ are semi synthetic (Synthetic Technology is written on the bottle).
    Please let me know the experience, if possible.

    • @manu201022
      @manu201022 Před 2 lety

      I have used Castrol Activ 20w40 in my Passion Pro which has 10w30 factory recommendation. Castrol 20w40 makes the engine ultra smooth and silent, engine doesn't heat up and the bike is easily able to cruise at 60-70 all day.
      But there's a huge negative to using this grade, the engine life decreases drastically. 20w40 has very poor cold start properties. With 20w40 grade, the engine takes a lot of time to warm up because the oil takes its own sweet time to flow during a morning cold start. This causes metal to metal contact and hence engine life is reduced. For maximum engine life, the engine oil should instantly reach and lubricate every part of the engine, mainly the engine bearings during the first start in the morning. That's why every manufacturer is recommending 10w, 5w and 0w grades these days. No company recommends 20w40 for their new products. Apache series have 10w30 recommendation. Use 10w40 grade for more smoothness and engine life.

    • @sujaybiswas783
      @sujaybiswas783 Před 2 lety +2

      Hi,
      There are 2 different things:
      1. Cold Start
      2. Warm Up Time
      Cold start is only to consider when, starting engine with everything cold.
      Once engine is started, it will depend upon engine idle power and oil viscosity index.
      If engine is same, then Oil Viscosity Index will matter. Lower the viscosity index, lesser the warm up time. For example, 10w40 has higher viscosity index and will take more warmup time in apache whereas 20w40 has lower viscosity index and will take less warm up time.
      Reason: For low viscosity index, a temperature change will change the viscosity in large extent. So, 20w40 will thin out quickly compared to 10w40.
      If engine oil is same but engines are different, then, high power engine will take less warm up time. For example Apache will take less time to warm up than Passion pro, when same 20w40 engine oil is used.
      Regarding engine damage during cold start, yes, during winter season, 20w40 will cause more damage compared to 10w30 due to more viscosity.
      Considering 10C winter temperature, below is the approx. viscosity:
      10w30: 320~380 cSt
      20w40: 700~850 cSt
      Considering 30C summer temperature, below is the approx. viscosity:
      10w30: 100~130 cSt
      20w40: 170~210 cSt
      So, during 10C, there is the difference of around 500 cSt, whereas during 30C, the difference is only 80 cSt.
      So, during non winter season, 20w40 will not cause much damage compared to using 10w30 in winter season (definitely in winter season, 20w40 will cause more damage).
      Also, summer season is coming, that's why I told to try this experiment, as there will not be any problem of cold starting of Apache when using 20w40.

      @@sujaybiswas783 wow, thats quite some info. I am from. Kerala, where the the climate is unpredictable and always changing. We get chilly climate, extreme heat, rain, etc almost everyday. Here, we mostly use 10w40 in RTR200 4v and RTR160 4v. We don't use 10w30 because the engine feels harsh at high rpms. We also don't use 20w40 because it goes against the quick revving nature of Apache engines, also makes the bike feel sluggish.
      My point about Passion Pro was about using the engine oil brand you mentioned, i.e 'Castrol Activ 20w40'. Just shared my experience of using t that engine oil for 50000+ kms.

    • @sujaybiswas783
      @sujaybiswas783 Před 2 lety +1

      @@manu201022
      Hi,
      I am from West Bengal and currently live in Delhi NCR.
      I don't completely agree with you that Apache will feel sluggish with 20w40. For most of the cases, it will work fine, but for extreme cases (more than 90% power is used), it may feel harsh. As at 190C~200C temperature, 20w40 is slightly thinner than 10w30.
      But, yes, passion pro will definitely feel sluggish with that 20w40.
      As there is a huge power difference in those 2 bikes.
      Many people feel engine harshness with stock engine oil, especially when engine is old and during summer season.
      I found some important parameters of engine which needs to be checked.
      1. Engine fins should be clear. This will improve head cooling.
      2. Bottom of oil sump should be also clear. This will improve oil cooling (for apache, it will matter a very small due to dedicated oil cooling radiator).
      By doing above, 95% of overheating issues are resolved during summer season.

    But most of general public cannot understand the meanings of scientific terms n maths associated with it. Make a comparison video on stock engine oils made by two wheeler manufacturers like Suzuki Ecstar, Honda, Yamalube and TVS Skutaa.
    I had been using the Suzuki Ecstar mineral oil on my Burgman Street and I could feel performance going down after 1500 kms. I usually changed it around 2000 kms as it was not worth pushing much after that. Now I have the Suzuki Ecstar R7000 semi synthetic oil. After around 1800kms, it is better than the mineral one but not that good. Still there are quite some vibrations on pick up and idling and reduction in high speed performance. Both are 10W 30. I usually drive at high speed on highways with sometimes getting stuck in traffic jams.
    Maybe after the warranty period I will put this or the Motul 7100 10W 40.
    (PS: what's with two wheeler manufacturers not allowing to put same grade oil from oil manufacturers?? And they will void the warranty too. Do they know that there are better oils in the market?)

    From all the comments that I see generally, everyone here has to remember something..
    Engine Oil efficiency also depends on how you take care of the other parts of your bike.. Your fuel, your air intake filter and radiator and so on.. Even if you use one of the best engine oils out there but you don't take care of the others, there's no point as well..

    • @manu201022
      @manu201022 Před 2 lety +1

      2500 km. Thats the best any mineral/semi/full synth engine oil can last in an air cooled / forced air cooled engine, in Indian conditions. You can stretch the drain interval of full synthetic to 3500-4000km, but post 2500 km the lubrication properties of the oil decrease and the engine would start consuming (burning) oil. Basically you would be damaging the engine.

    I'm using mobil scooter 10w30 grade engine oil on my activa 125 the same grade as company suggests the performance of this engine oil is actually great for normal commuting on city roads and out on highway 70kmph is ideal for 125 cc scooter usually this engine oil comes in budget segment
    Few months back I got to know about this Castrol power1 ultimate scooter engine oil so I decided to give it a try as this Oil priced around 470rs. For mobil engine oil the drain interval is 3000km So I decided to drain it in around 5000 km . Now when I am commenting there is only 32km left to complete 5000km on odo. is it safe to stretch a 5w40 grade oil till this range because there are no such major fall in performance or in smoothness or malfunction in engine whats your opinion on that ??

    • @DanielLimSantoso
      @DanielLimSantoso Před 2 lety

      It really depends on your driving as well.. If you're cruising at normal speeds and do not travel long distances daily, then it's not a problem.. I'm using a 2016 Yamaha NMAX.. I've stretched my Fully Synthetic Engine Oil until 4,500km and it started seeing a drop in performance and also fuel efficiency.. Yamaha themselves recommends and interval of every 4,000km.. So in my opinion, I would say 5,000km should be the limit..
