You need to soak the bowl, etc with CLR. ( calcium, lime and rust remover) You definitely have to soak it overnight. Lay paper towels over the hinges and soak them with the CLR. Make sure the wet towels touching all the stains. It should be much easier to remove that buildup the next day. Also steel wool will work to get that buildup off. Good luck!!🍀
Best bet is to do what i did when mine built up after being away with hard limey water is get an old toilet brush with some chemical cleaners and attach the brush to a drill and run it around the limey build up it worked for me
for everyone saying “he’s using bare hands 🤢” i think you’re missing the fact that he has two babies, having two small creatures that puke and poop a little bit everywhere really does desensitise you to “gross” things. I think it’s a safe bet that the toilet isn’t the worse thing he’s had to clean up recently
You need gloves... you can get a serious infection if you had an open sore. I knew some whi had their finger amputated because of an infection from fecal bacteria .

I use CLR to but I just let it set for a few hours and it all comes off
I use CSDB - cleaning vinegar + salt + dish soap + bleach
That is not cleaned "from time to time" that bowl is cleaned annually and it should be daily.
