Matt, if you want to reduce your hardware on this rig, look up the dropper loop knot. It’s something I learned from saltwater bait fishing with multiple hooks. Tie the dropper loop, cut one end of the loop close to the knot and bang, you’ve got a swivel-less T rig drop shot. I use it for casting and drop swimming small swimbaits and it prevents spooking smallmouth with the swivel while sight fishing. I don’t find twist to be an issue personally
Love the idea. It's similar to the Japanese style tracer rigs, but with significantly less line twist. I like the idea of using it in current or like a modified c-rig. Another great idea and solid video. Thanks Matt and keep sticking them in the tournament, you got this one!
It's just a three way rig, not a drop shot but very similar. It's common for trolling or bank fishing for walleyes and stripped bass in fast moving water. It's very common in saltwater techniques but they tie it without swivels. I've been using it for ages, very common in the Midwest and fast moving water other places.
I tried this a few years ago because it was a weird bite one day. I got the idea from how we rig our catfishing rods. I’m really glad to see you’ve had the same idea and had success with it. I caught a couple fish on it one day but wasn’t consistent so I chalked it up as a one off but I’ll have to try it again. Thanks for these videos.
Once again Matt you the man I have tried most all your daily tips they work so far so why not try this to appreciate you taking the time to share your tips with us thanks Matt 🙏
Great tip, Matt! Dropshot is my #1 confidence bait. This is a nice 'twist' on the original DS. Very similar to the double fluke rig. Thanks for sharing! Really appreciate all your videos. Now my favorite channel!
Feedback: a while back you did a 3 most underrated lakes video, Lanier was one of em. I was just starting to get serious about trying to be on the water at least twice a week back then but wasn’t sure where to focus. Your video convinced me to focus on Lanier I have had the time of my life learning that lake ever since. Those spots want to take your rod from you, like for real! The fight the put up is so fun. I now know the southern 2/3rds of Lanier like the back of my hand and looking forward to learning where the next season will push the fish to. Thanks so much Matt!!!
I fish shallow rivers for smallmouth in N IL and this will absolutely work on those bronzebacks. Great modification here for fishing current. Thank you so much. Can't wait to go wading! Also congrats on the STL finish!
So glad you shared this, and it’s great seeing you do well on the St Lawrence River, I especially like the fact you tried this from the bank, with your kids….. 😜🎣
Great video! I've always used a VMC spinshot hook to minimize line twists but I definitely see that this technique offers several other advantages. Keep up the awesome content because tips like these will help take my drop shot game to the next level!
Love the videos. I have used a rig like that for walleye fishing on a river and never thought of using it for bass.. The day I stop learning will be the 1st day of my demise. As I get older I just hope I can remember all the tips I have learned over the years.. Lol
The other nice thing about this technique is you can pre-rig it and leave it in your tackle box. For those of us that are still dirty clip users and not tying each bait on, this would allow you to easily clip on an entire dropshot rig.
I used to do the same thing in the ‘90’s with a three-way swivel. I just experimented with it and it worked, but I wasn’t fishing it in current. It worked in post spawn where I fished it.
What a great idea!!!!!! It’s like a suspended Carolina Rig or CarolinA Drop shot. Both are too much long to say. So I will call it the Stafan rig. I will be adding this to my list of techniques thank you!
I found Spro power combination swivels at Scheels. They look the same, maybe a little smaller than what you use. Thanks for all your great videos Matt!
Used to use that rig with much smaller hook and line in the seventies on the River Thames, in the UK! It's a winner for sure there. I'm sure it works as well for Bass!
Rigged up a few of your drop shot hair jig rigs. caught 3 nice Smallies, not big but I'm convinced the rig really works!! Thanks I appreciate the tip. Should work awesome for spring too.
Have been looking for a better drop shot rigging when casting from shore. This reminds me of when I was a tad and fishing with pap and we used a similar rig in the river. Of course no plastics or "T" swivels. We would use bait, cast out in current areas and slo roll the with the old Zebco's back to the bank. We caught a lot of fish. Since I mostly bank fish and this is a new twist on bank fishing. Thanks for sharing.
Used to make a rig like that for yellow perch in the river with 2 snell hooks and night crawlers when I was a kid. Never thought of it with a bass bait. Thanks
Matt check out the thundermist lures ball bearing T swivels, you can get them in small sizes too. This is pretty much a summer flounder rig we use on the nj coast. Works excellent for drift bottom jigging. I gotta give this a try on bass, thanks for the vid!
Just checked day 1 results - in the running for the big money - good luck as the pressure mounts - a vid on how you picked spots in the beginning and as the tournament progressed would be fun!
Absolutely genius stuff right there, i will be trying this as I can see the benefit of this rig. Congrats on your standing in the tournament on SLR. Good luck on day two, Im hoping you crush them!!!
Two rigs that I have the least experience/success/confidence in. Drop shot and Carolina Rig. Really appreciate this video Matt. I will try this mod from the bank. Now I gotta find the T swivels!
Look into Thundermist Lure Company. They have what they call a t turn. The swivels are much smaller and super strong. I use the t turns for walleye. I also believe you get a better hook up when the hook isnt connected to the line. Also works well ice fishing
You just deflated my poor ego, I've always wanted to come up with a new technique on my own. I literally dreamed this up yesterday and bought the tackle for it today. Only to find out you've been doing it all along. 😭 Oh well, back to the drawing board! 😂
@@MattStefanFishing Yes, it's a rig/technique used in West Michigan when the Salmon and Trout come into rivers and tributaries. Uses 2 swivels, one that's free moving with a weight to graze the bottom with a fly or bait in tow. The anglers use long flyrods with spinning or fly reels. Being a fly guy from Colorado I was kinda shocked but it works!
Love this idea.I use that type of swivel on my Flathead rigs. What do you think of using that type of rig for fishing vertically with live bait in a reservoir
Thanx Matt!! Hey man, video idea: Guys in the south just saw all the north country tournaments and want to make a trip up there to have a go at the smallies but may be timid because It’s so far out of our ballpark. Maybe a few lakes, right month and strategies we could count on for a trip up north!
I like this. I rarely use a dropshot because I bank fish, but I gave this a try tonight. I didn't have a fancy swivel though, so I just tied a leader to my leader with a double uni and didn't trim off my tag end and put a drop shot weight on it, then tied a hook to my mainline. I lost the swivel action, but I did hook up and surprisingly didn't break off. Although I can see that a t-swivel is ideal for this rig, as I know the double uni weakened my line.
@@MattStefanFishing ordered some t-swivels, but in the meantime I had two regular bearing swivels, so I rigged up a double fluke rig, and tied my sinker to the main line. Going to try that out tomorrow. Hoping that it kind of acts like a mixture of a free-rig and dropshot. With the bait able to spin around and move up and down the main line, with the main line acting as my anchor. Thanks again for the tip!
Hey, remember that drop shot video from way back when? Haha… I’m going back through old videos. 😂 Definitely using this technique, haha. Much appreciated, Matt.
