  • Moral theology is a complicated subject in the Catholic Church. It's not enough to look just at one's actions. We must also consider intentions and circumstances.

My daughter's religion class at her Jesuit HS had a similar discussion on sin. Her teacher also underscored the importance of considering intent. My daughter and I had a great discussion as we drove home about what is considered a sin. The question she posed to me was is wearing makeup a sin? Depends on the intent. If you're doing it because you're trying to entice a married man, then yes, it's a sin. If you're wearing it to simply look nice, maybe hide some complexion flaws and it's not the focus of your day, then no, it's not a sin. I think Jesus' message to the Pharisees about when to obey the law (especially the ones they created) was very much focused on intent.

Did the makeup seduce the married man or did the woman. If your daughter wore really nice makeup and a short dress but her intent was not to seduce anyone, then she gets raped, who was sinning. The man but it is the same makeup.

This reminds me of my own RCIA catechesis taught by a priest almost 30 years ago. Like you, he was concerned with our understanding WHY something is or is not sinful, and he too talked about the various factors that determine culpability. Thanks be to God for priests like you and like my RCIA priest who get under the surface and teach deeper meaning rather than "just because" theology.

Dear Father Casey, I want to reiterate how much each and every one of your videos mean to me and I am sure to many others. We need leaders such as yourself who are well versed in all the teachings of our Church while allowing the Holy Spirit to speak to us and allowing us to recognize Him. Sometimes I am a little disheartened in reading some of the comments that follow. I suppose I never realized how many Catholics are so engrained in fanatical points of view, perhaps learned from the time they were children, and in doing so miss the magnificent gift of discerning and the feeling of abiding in Him who is all love. Please do not stop guiding us walking on this path with us. You are blessed and I for one, am thankful for you.

This reminds me of being a student of the Rev. Phillip Keane, S.S. 40 years ago. I loved learning Moral Theology! It's really hard to sin; you've got to work hard at it.
It takes 3 things to happen for an act to be sinful:
    1. Serious matter
    2. Full and free intention
    3. Decision to act wrongly anyway.

    • @marksmith4892
      @marksmith4892 Před 3 lety +8

I think people have the wrong idea about what is evil in this case. I always think of the evil not as giving in to desire but rather self-destructing. Think of it this way. Why go to a strip club and then walk away feeling frustrated and demoralized? There is no completion there, and you've contributed to the emotional destruction of a woman who has no self-respect. What about lusting after a woman? Well I think there too it's the same idea. If you have no intention of pursuing a girl then look away and save yourself the pain of longing for what you can never have. If you really need to use the restroom but can't, would you intentionally turn on the faucet and listen to dripping water to torture yourself? If you really wanted to sleep but had work to do, would you stare longingly at a comfortable bed knowing you couldn't sleep? That's the idea. So if you're having sexual urges then go work to find yourself a wife instead of chasing pipe dreams.

Some action are intrically evil in that matter : Fornication/ Masturbation.
In any of those case it would be a sacrilege to take the Eucharist or to do such sacrament as mariage, confirmation, ... You should go to confession ASAP in that case. It is always a grave sin but not necessarely a mortal one (that cut you from god) as a mortal sin have to be 1/ a grave sin 2/ conscious of its gravity 3/ with complete free will .
Adiction or such thing can thus reduce your culpability and maje it not mortal but it will always be grave! And any grave sin (as you never know if its mortal or not and as it is grave) have to be confessed before doing such thing as taking the Eucharist.
For thoughts, basically any impure thinking that you do not refrain but voluntarily entertain OR from which you cultivate a intention of doing it is a sin. If you have an impure thought but you do not entertain it and refrain it, it is not a sin but only a vice.
As Jesus Said "the one that "But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.". So basically if you voluntaraly and freely entertain such a sin interiorely, it is even possibly a mortal sin. However if such a thinking come but you refrain it and you do not entertain it, do not worry.

When I went through RCIA nearly 30 years ago, I felt like I learned nothing as the priest was present exactly twice and the folks who took turns "teaching" had no answers to any of my questions. As a group, we were treated as if none of us had ever opened a Bible, heard of Jesus, or had any idea why we were in class in the first place. What I should have done was to make a list of the questions and leave the list with the priest. I'm not certain he could have answered all of them off the top of his head, but I am fairly sure he could have (easily?) researched them.
I always knew I would one day join the Church because of what I experienced at 2 pre-Vatican II Masses when I was brought there by some of my extended family, and I thank God for those two aunts.

A good example is Yoga (which lots of people like to criticize). As mentioned in the video, the key thing is INTENT. As long as you are doing these poses for stretching and mental health, then one is fine. A person is not worshiping other deities/idols unless they "believe" they are (in that case it's obviously a sin).

What a fascinating video - well done! I very much like he subtlety of your argument, and found a lot to love about it. It really made me contemplate the difference between "sin" with "fault". It seems to me that you dont have to be at fault to sin. My (admittedly lay) understanding of sin is whatever separates us from God (even if it is not specifically our fault) . As such, it can be the things we do without even knowing the results. We are constantly having an affect on the world, both positive and negative, even if we never see the consequences of our action. Hannah Arendt points out, “The reason why we are never able to foretell with certainty the outcome and end of any action is simply that action has no end...the smallest act in the most limited circumstances bears the seed of the same boundlessness, because one deed, and sometimes one word, suffices to change every constellation.” In other words, you don't have to be aware of your sin for it to be a sin. You may make what seems like a perfect choice: "I'm going to drive to the supermarket." only to find that as you drive to Publix (the one true Supermarket :) ) a suicide jumps infront of your car and you run them over. This is not your fault. But had you God's perfect view of existence, you would have seen how your decision to go to Publix would lead to a death and therefore make a more perfect choice. "The perfect choice" would be the only sinless choice. But, since we are not God ("original sin") we can never know when that choice is being made.
It becomes increasingly uncomfortable to make these lists of "what is and is not a sin." We are all sinners all the time. What we are really talking about is reducing human suffering or living a moral life to the best of our ability. This acknowledgement of "doing the best we can" can keep us from believing we can be sinless. That doesn't require a list of dos-and-dont's but a contemplative life where every moment is a struggle to stay on the straight and narrow. THANK YOU for being part of my journey and personal struggle.

In postwar Germany, the winter of 1945-46 was especially harsh. In order to survive, the people would steal coal from the railway cars to heat their home. Is this theft? Yes. But one has to consider the mitigating factors. So much so, that Archbishop Josef Frings of Cologne said that those who did this committed no sin, providing they keep track of what they took and paid for it when they were able to. However, those who made no effort to pay, would be held accountable for their theft. This led to the creation of a new German word called "fringsen," which means to steal but for a justifiable reason.

"Lists" of sinful actions are fine; but as to each sin on the list, there are all sorts of contingent factors that can aggravate or mitigate the seriousness or personal culpability of the sin. That's why we can't have a "confession machine," but need a "judge" in the person of the priest, who can evaluate the circumstances surrounding the commission of the act to determine if a person is even culpable morally, and if he is, what the extent of his personal fault is. This was a good video explaining some of the factors that go into determining the sinfulness of an act. The RCIA instructor was woefully off course in listing second or third level acts as sins, such as eating unhealthy foods or violating minor traffic laws or other mala prohibita actions.

Fr Casey, it is not my place to debate a priest. I am have only been fully Catholic since April 20 this year. But I would like to mention something.
I think many well meaning Catholics want to see that the full gospel is preached, and they are worried that the current church leaders are not fully teaching the clear and present danger of hell being an option, and that our Lord did say MANY will not enter the kingdom of heaven.
Yes, your video is correct teaching. The catechism does mention intent. But it also mentions reconciliation. If we don't maintain that certain things will keep people from entering into eternal life with the Father, are we not letting them remain in their errors? Won't we risk being locked out where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth if we don't preach the full gospel? Christ came to take away the sins of the world, and REPENT the kingdom of God is at hand... as in, right now. And "Exhort one another daily while it is called today lest any of you be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin."
So, Fr Casey, I think some Catholics are very concerned for the souls who are lost in darkness right now. And we are supposed to be a light. And we are supposed to be holy. And I think people want to see that the priests - who ARE responsible for the saving of souls - make sure people are CLEARLY taught about what they need to do to be saved. The burden is light and the yoke is easy... but the gate is super slender!

Father Casey I’m struggling with Catholic Church’s stance on contraception specifically condoms. As a lifetime Catholic I’m only 29 I’ve agreed with everything except the stance on contraception. Unfortunately I don’t think it’s a stance I can get behind especially when churches like the Eastern Orthodox church permit condoms etc for family planning. In the Churches eyes am I risking damnation by using a condom when I’m married. It’s something that I be been struggling with and non of my local priests will make time to talk to me please help!

But the point is we are to live for the next world to degree we can, and do what we can to make that next world a possibility for others. If your fears are about corruption in the Church, Jesus dealt with religious corruption, too, and advised people to remain obedient to what the corrupt leaders say; just don't do what they do.

The cause of evil and sin is the advent of the five dominate vices within the soul - Ego, Lust, Anger, Attachment, Greed...you can consider these vices as the "influence" which enables us to perform sinful acts. These are foreign to the soul's original qualities, (Virtues) Purity, Peace, Love, Happiness, Humility and so on. The impressions of these vices are recorded within the soul, the Memory which in turn influences the Mind and Intellect. Consider it like a cycle of thoughts, impressions and influence. We souls are made in the image and likeness of God because firstly, souls are incorporeal, secondly we share the same faculties, Mind, Intellect, Subconscious Mind (Memory, Resolves) Thirdly the original qualities of the soul (Virtues) are Purity, Peace, Love, Happiness, Humility. The vices are born through Body Consciousness, which are totally responsible for evil and sin, whereas Soul Consciousness is drawing upon the virtues. So think of it as a battle between the souls internal virtues vs the external vices which have come to overthrow our inner kingdom! Over the centuries we have depicted these vices as the devil, Satan, fallen angels and Ravan, but in reality they are the vices within the soul that cause us to go against God's natural order.

I have always believed the Church would be a lot healthier if it stopped defining sin altogether, recognizing its human hubris in doing so. Define and uphold ideals instead as a source of inspiration and grace. But that ain’t gonna happen.
Do I stay or do I leave? Actually, I can’t imagine leaving as anything other than theoretical. Still....

I remember a very long conversation that I had with someone regarding the "age of consent". The age in the Philippines is particularly very low at 12 years old. The reason that I gave is that there are non-Christians whose culture allows them to marry at that age. And we wouldn't want to make an entire group of people because their culture is different from that of ours.
And he just cited the "universally evil" clause, saying that we could equate that to murder. Since an 12 years old has no developed reasoning to decide for himself (which I could argue because at age 8, I was the one who processed my Confirmation with our local church, I requested for my own documents and I attended the catechisms all by myself. I was even the one who chose my own sponsors. So, I could definitely say that not all 12 years old could not make a decision based on their own enlightened will).
Now, given this argument, how do we deal with moral questions regarding people whose values we don't share? For example, does Catholic moral theology judge polygamy as "sinful" when it is the non-Christians who do it? Especially if all the wives are taken cared of, it appears that no human right is being violated. Another example is marriage equality, as there is no short term public threat when "people love people of the same gender"?
Personally, I tend to be clear on my point. "I will not judge you if you do that but I would not personally be doing that". Of course, we don't want our morality to be "relaxed" to the point that everything becomes morally acceptable. However, we would not want to fall to bigotry as well.
Thanks Father. Hoping that you could enlighten me.

    • @krdiaz8026
      @krdiaz8026 Před 5 lety +2

nasugbubatangas Polygamy, and everything else the RCC teaches against, is always inherently sinful regardless who does it. However, God will judge us according to the situation.
For example: If polygamy was done by a Muslim who was taught that polygamy is not evil, and he does this according to Islamic laws, e.g. he is fair to all his wives, then he has not deliberately sinned because he didn't know, so God will take that into account, BUT he will likely need to suffer some time in purgatory, not necessarily as a punishment but as a way to purge him of his sinful Islamic desires, in this case the desire to have more than one wife. Take note that time in purgatory is not always only a punishment but more a way to purify us of our imperfections.
If this seems unfair to you, think of it this way: Sin, according to the RCC, causes wounds in the soul. When a Muslim man practices polygamy, he is wounding his soul. Granted he doesn't know this, but he is still wounding himself. It's like when you eat something poisonous but you didn't know. You can't be accused of committing suicide because you didn't know, but you still need to deal with the poison, right?
To save this Muslim man, God either gives him the grace to realize that monogamy is good and polygamy is bad (or better, the grace to convert to Catholicism) regardless what his religion teaches, or God saves him after death by healing his soul's wounds in purgatory.
This is the reason why the RCC doesn't "give in" to the world's standards, or to be ok with other people doing stuff as long as they don't force us to do the same. The RCC knows that these people are constantly wounding their souls even if they don't know they are doing it. Obviously, the RCC tolerates these sinful practices because we respect personal freedom, but we can't ever say these acts are ok. We must always say that they are not ok, but most people interpret this as "judgment" in the negative sense. What the RCC is doing is like what a doctor does when he tells his patient that his weight is unhealthy. That's not a judgment but simply the truth, yet people's feelings are hurt so they don't want the doctor to say that. Unfortunately the alternative to not getting your feelings hurt is to remain fat and unhealthy.
      Hope this helps! 🙂

The secret is, when people feel accepted for who they are and loved they will deeply change their sinful behaviors. Of course, it will take time and patience. I worked with people for 50 years on these issues. But If people feel threatened with hell they don't deeply change and permanently. This was the revolution of Jesus teaching and what set him apart from other religions. Unfortunately, many conservatives focus on fear of damnation and the nasty stuff, and it's because they are fear-based. Their world is small. 50 years of watching this first hand.

There are 3 types of Sins.
    1. Iniquity- a preconceived, premeditated action.
    2. Transgression- breaking the commandment of god without considering it prior to committing it.
    3. Sin of ignorance- a sin committed without knowing it is sin.
Sin is the transgression of the law.

Fr., I think a simple definition of sin would be helpful, both for this video and the RCIA class you sat in on. Augustine defined sin as the will to obtain or retain what justice forbids. This definition has a few critical elements, name that sin is different than injustice. We understand sin to be an act of the will, giving assent to an act that the person knows to be (or even thinks to be) wrong. Therefore we can establish that there are *evil* acts, which if done, constitute sin on the part of the doer.
This is an important distinction. It is improper to speak of actions, the way the RCIA instructor did, as either sin or not. More properly, acts are either good or bad, intrinsically. Homosexual acts, for example, are intrinsically evil. Willful consent to such acts would be sinful. Eating fast food is not intrinsically evil, and consent to do so would not be sinful. However, I would not disagree with an argument that inordinate consumption of fast food might become immoral, but I digress.

What about projecting our own sins onto others? Remember the time Jesus stopped a group of men from stoning a woman? I'm at an age now when breaking the ten commandments would be almost impossible but I'm still working on the shadows. Carl Jung said, “Everyone carries a shadow, and the less it is embodied in the individual’s conscious life, the blacker and denser it is.” Hopefully my shadows will be brought to light before I leave this body suit. As to your catechist, Father Casey, he brought to mind something I read this week: “The bigger the front, the bigger the back.” There's some dark shadows hiding behind absolutism, including the sin we share as human beings, the fundamental corporate sin which tells us we are separate from our world; separate from God and nature, and, separate from other humans, and even from ourselves.

Great video Fr. Casey! I think something a lot of people struggle with is this idea of culpability. If someone commits an evil act, why can't we just automatically say they've committed a moral sin.
In any case, I've realized lately that if I am ever questioning my own culpability, to still bring the act up in confession. Whether or not I did it freely or had full knowledge of what I was doing, I still did something wrong and though I may not need forgiveness, I can still use the healing and the strengthening.
Plus, I can also clarify with the Priest's help.

We can not cut corners. Relatism would be stating that one does not think it is so bad, so it can't be that bad. I hope this helps clarify the depth of morality a bit. Is it a sin? Is there any directive against it in the Scriptures? Does it have a negative effect on anyone? Obviously, murder, theft, lying, greed, etc. negatively affect others. Other issues aren't so clear. Some believe that there are prohibitions in the Bible regarding things about which there is actually no mention. I could go on for hours on that subject (alcohol consumption is a great example here, drunkenness yes, consumption, no,,there are many others). But, what I've come to rest upon, is that if it doesn't have any negative impact on anyone (legitimately..offending someone who doesn't like what I'm doing isn't a legitimate harm) and if it doesn't keep me awake at night, then the intentions behind the action are probably not sinful and it isn't a sin. Most of us have a conscience. We've all felt "guilty" about something we've done or NOT done. That's a sign that you've sinned. Most of the guilt that I've struggled with in my life, has been over things that I DIDN'T DO. Not things that I did.
