  • Good day everyone!
    Psychonauts 2 largely follows the story of the original Psychic 6. After the Battle of Grulovia, all were damaged in some form or another. Neither of them being the same.
    Before the beginning of the series and at the genesis of the Psychonauts, the original members spent their time in the Green Needle Gulch. While there, they performed experiments into the human psyche. Diving deeper than was safe to do so.
    In this episode of Psychology of Psychonauts, we will discuss the morals and ethics of having such power over the human mind. Making permanent alterations is a task that even with the most well-being intentions can lead to disaster.
    As always, free discussion is encouraged in the comments!

    One interesting thing to note is that the reason that those actions goes against the mission statement of the Psychonauts is because the mission statement of the Psychonauts was likely written in reaction to the fallout of those actions. Before those events, they were not an organization, they were a think tank, where this kind of experimentation would be expected

      Also before Ford used the astrolabe on Maligula and Augustus all their previous experiments were on willing and consenting subjects. So while they probably went too far they didn’t really know that at the time as they were the initial pioneers into the field where everything was unknown. While a support structure was mentioned we don’t know what exactly it was though I doubt it was sufficient. I think the main problem was that they didn’t formalise their testing process before Ford broke his mind after they became famous. Or formally state a code of ethics (though they might have had a informal one the games don’t reveal save they all respected each other).

    After playing Psychonauts 2 recently to 100% completion, I feel that if there is ever a Psychonauts 3, Otto should be set to be the next major threat.
    Not only he's the only mind of the Psychic Seven we don't get to visit, but in the minds that we do and have a manifestation of him, they see him in a bad light. Not only that, but he was the first member to be recruited by Ford, and he was the one who brought Lucrecia to the team. Plus, after the battle, he was the only one that remained "normal" and got the spotlight, getting funding to create inventions, gather brains of agents to experiment with, and even wanting to create smaller versions of the Astrolathe for commercial use...
    It really seems that throughout the story, he was in the background of events, building himself to be where he is so he could realize his vision, whatever it might be, and to an extent, maybe using his fellow colleagues and even be responsible for their tragedies to keep all the glory... There is a lot of space there for building him as a villain, as he doesn't even have much of a background shown from before Ford first found him.
    With that being said, whatever the case may be, I hope there is a new game!

    • @edfreak9001
      @edfreak9001 Před 6 měsíci +23

      I could see it, or at least that he's a major cause of it somehow. We spend the entire game exploring most of them except for Otto who is basically only there to give you gadgets for exploration/completion/justify shops existing, invent the Astrolabe, and have a plot excuse as to why -they don't need to pay Jack Black for overworld lines- Helmut's brain is kept safe after all this time.

    • @perkasenior
      @perkasenior Před 6 měsíci +19

      @@edfreak9001 true, but even something as simple as he providing the gadgets is relevant to him having ulterior motives, more than just being a game mechanic, as he says himself that what he provides is only supposed to be used by agents, not kids like Raz. So, he definitely used Raz to test them and see how they're handled on the field by someone inexperienced. So, if he's willing to test his creations like that, who's to say he didn't experiment with the rest of the Psychic Seven? His actions kept making life worse for everyone, while he gained his glory and funding, so it cannot be a coincidence. The same way that the events of the first game were recontextualized to have been started by a character of the second game, now they set up a framework for the story to continue, with some direction already hinted at.

      One detail I noticed about Otto is he holds his necklace when using psychic powers instead of it coming from his head. It makes it feel like comparatively he is weaker than the others psychically but uses machines to compensate for that. Amplifying his power.
      Not sure how that all fits into your thoughts but I felt it interesting to point out.

    • @perkasenior
      @perkasenior Před 6 měsíci +17

      @GamingUniversityUoG I did notice that as well. It goes unexplained and without any context in the game itself, no one even commenting on it as far as I'm aware, so it's a detail about Otto's character that doesn't have.
      But you are right, it feels the necklace is used to artificially amplify his psychic powers, and he is weaker than the others, with him being an expert in building psycho-reactive technology, as the game puts it, to channel his psychic energy, rather than having the mental power to do so himself like the others. It could be simply a representation on his character design, of him being a scientist and building machines and using one to channel his powers, but there can be more to that.
      After doing a bit of research myself, I find that Otto could have a condition called aphantasia, and the necklace is an artificial "mind's eye", that he created to not only enhance, but actually be able to use, his psychic power, as he would not be able to create mental images in his head, and therefore be locked out of his abilities as a psychic, the necklace being a medium to bring them out. Which would also explain why we can't visit his mind in the game, this condition would make it that he either doesn't allow access to his mental world, or doesn't have one to begin with. And, the machines he creates can be seen as an embodiment of his thoughts and imagination, as through the drawing of blueprints and the building of machines that he embeds with his mental energy through the necklace, his "mind's eye", he manifests in the physical world what he cannot in his mind, his ideas brought to life in a more literal sense than the existence of creatures like censors, regrets, etc. This is shown in the machines he created when he was sad or hungry, or the camera that can take pictures inside the minds of others.
      To sum up. Aphantasia would create a mental block that he cannot overcome, being then a psychic without actually being able to use psychic powers. So, he becomes a scientist, and invents psycho-reactive technologies to channel his mental energy outwards. He is then found by Ford, goes with him to mine psytanium which would be fundamental to develop his technologies, and takes the opportunity to further his research of the mind with the Seven, the Astrolathe being built so he could ultimately alter his own mind to unlock his full potential as a psychic. The foundation of the Psychonauts and the battle of Grulovia end up being mere side effects to his own goals, as the Psychonauts gave him funding and recognition, and from their foundation and the ethically dubious exploration of the mind they did on themselves, to the battle and its consequences up to the point where Raz appears and, with Otto's discreet but intentional aid, is able to "fix" everyone, all of it was data into the development of the Astrolathe. He had to stop when everyone else was too broken to continue after the battle, but he gathered dead agent's brains to continue his research on his own, and after the events of the game, having a conclusion to the Astrolathe's findings, he claims he's going to develop it further for commercial use, but "aesthetic changes in the mind" could mean getting rid of his condition rather than accepting it.
      From this, there can be formed a foundation for his character development into an antagonistic role in a future story, going against the Psychonauts' and Raz's values on approach to mental health and acceptance of oneself, among other things.
      I hope this all is coherent enough to understand, I tried my best to express my thoughts on the subject and they kept developing as I wrote...

      @@perkasenior From what I'm understanding of your theory, I can see his mental world looking one of two ways. Option 1: it is wholly mechanical with no natural landscape, spare parts everywhere, and areas that are still under construction, as if the mental world itself is an unfinished prototype. This would naturally extend from his reliance on his inventions to channel his psychic energy, possibly even needing to use the PSI portal on the necklace itself to act as a bridge. Option 2: it is VERY sketchy, like a lower quality version of his blueprints. This could be a more direct display of the aphantasia, as being unable to clearly picture your own mind would show just how frustrated Otto has been for his entire career. Writing this reply, I'm picturing a way to blend the two ideas. After entering through the necklace, you enter the Machine Paradise, an extension of the necklace in his mind that produces the mental images needed for his psychic abilities to function properly. It's basically a factory with almost everything Otto could ever need, almost. Being an artificial construct, the Paradise needs to harvest psychic energy from outside to create these images, thus worker robots are periodically sent out into the Uncharted Wastes, a sketch-like landscape with no clear details but an abundance of psychic energy hotspots resulting from being unable to naturally focus it himself. It just so happens that Raz enters Otto's mind right as one of these expeditions is being organized, and after helping out with various functions, he gets drafted into it. How's that idea sound?

    Something important to this discussion is the fact that this experimentation was meant to imply hallcuinogenic drug use _(the IRL origin of the term "psychonaut")_ and it reminds me of the recent controversies that have happened in the field, particularly Roland Griffiths' research.
    Long story short, Griffiths rigged his studies to try and create an abundance of positively reported spiritual experiences, creating a spiritual atmosphere, getting people's hopes up as much as possible, because he believed the increased understanding of human psychology granted by consistently reproducing spiritual awakenings in a laboratory setting could be incredibly important for humanity. The consequence however was he put his subjects' health second, infamously resulting in a man with a terminal illness getting a placebo, leaving when he realized he wasn't feeling anything, and committing suicide only a week later- Which he tried to brush aside as much as he could, only briefly mentioning it in the final version of the study as unrelated to their research.
    IMO there's a lot of legitimate research to be done with a lot of these drugs, but a lot of the old school experimentation left a negative legacy, the result being that we aren't _actually_ that much closer to an understanding of if these drugs could be used theraputically. Much of that old school research was poorly documented, unsafe, unethical, or attempting to find the wrong answers

    It's a good moral message for a game about entering people's minds, but I don't think that Otto Mentallis has learned his lesson yet. You might want to make a video about him, the other interns, and the Aquato family after you're done exploring the remaining mental worlds. I don't know if the experimentation performed there was really as bad as you say. Breaking something open *is* a valid way to learn about something- it's called reverse engineering. At least how I interpreted it, the game doesn't frame the experimentation itself as the problem, but rather the fact that Lucrecia left for war without waiting to get everything fixed up first. Green needle gulch was a safe place, it doesn't matter that they were left vulnerable since they couldn't be attacked to start with. There's all sorts of amazing stuff to be learned from those experiments, and the astrolathe was only used on those who were willing, it was only after everything went downhill that it was used to alter another by force. It's true that Maligula never would've risen if it wasn't for the experiments, but it's also true that she wouldn't have risen if Lucrecia hadn't run off so recklessly to help her home country, or if she had come back to the gulch afterwards instead of staying as minister of war.

    I am curious if their actions were truly a negligent lack of ethical caution, or if that is hindsight; perhaps they didn't fully appreciate just how dangerous the things they were dealing with at the time were. like you said, they were the kid who doesn't realize that touching a hot stove means you get burnt... but was there anyone around who knew better, who could warn them that touching the hot stove was dangerous?

    • @GamingUniversityUoG
      @GamingUniversityUoG  Před 6 měsíci

      Sounds like lack of caution and not realizing the potential danger really are the same thing just using different words. Negligence can fully be accidental.
      Absolutely no there was no one to warn them of the dangers. But after a while we should be able to anticipate problems before they arise. Not do anything recklessly until we get burned. I feel this whole situation was a learning experience for the Psychonauts which helped shape their mission statement moving forward.

    Regarding the irony of using the Astrolathe again despite it going against the modern Psychonauts objectives, I believe it's a case of "we used this powerful device to break things, so it'll be our best option at finding a way to fix it"
    Think back to Hollis's memories, and how after she broke her boss' mind using Mental Connection, Truman also had to use Mental Connection to fix the damage and bring him back to normal.
    Giving someone the tools to improve themselves is a fantastic goal, but if a third party fiddles where they shouldn't and breaks things then I say taking a more proactive approach is warranted

    ethics and moral's are much like beauty,
    people agree on most thing's, but in the end it's in the eyes of the beholder,
    we all agree a man (a human, not an adult male) killing another man is bad,
    but the second you add detail people start disagreeing, a regular person kill's a criminal, dose the man get of scot free, do you punish them,
    what about the death penalty, do regular killers deserve it, do serial killers deserve it, do only those who's death guarantees they will never do what they
    but acting like the beholder never changes is ignorant to how the world work's, as one get's older and they experience different event's, make decisions, experience the consequences & learn from both others and their past actions,
    so with this a question can be asked, do the psychic 6 deserve to go free or do they face consequences for actions they've already learned from and regretted,
    actually a lot of questions can be asked with what i just typed but this question has to do with the video so it's the one i'm putting down.

I have a question though, do you have any recommendations/tips or anything that can help build up analysis skills during first blind playthroughs, and subsequent playthroughs for that matter? • @GamingUniversityUoG
      @GamingUniversityUoG  Před 6 měsíci

      Yeah i think it mostly comes downt o consuming a lot of literature. Seeing patterns in storytelling and trying to make them fit into a logical consistency.
      It becomes easier to analyze when you know care was put into the work of fiction. Knowing that the writer and designer put intention into everything they do. So trying to categorize if something is meaningless, meaningful, or potentially meaningful. More data comes in it becomes easier to categorize details into those 3 boxes

    To add my two cents as someone studying biology, these just seem like the average ethical growing pains of any science. in my genetics lab we had to shake test tubes full of flies, and in my marine invert class we performed dissection upon live mussels. In both instances I was CONFLICTED about harming innocent animals that were similar in the fact that whether or not they feel pain is debatable. However, earlier biological experiments were far more....horrid. aside from famous examples like Harlow's monkeys, I read an article detailing an experiment in 1989 where vision altering goggles were bolted into the skulls of adolescent owls just to figure out how their vision would attenuate! Ultimately, the maligula incident is essentially analogous to that for the psychic sciences of that respective universe. While I do hope that lessons can be learned from this series of events going forward, I am sadly a tad doubtful due to the clandestine nature of the psychonauts and comments made by Otto in the postgame...

    • @GamingUniversityUoG
      @GamingUniversityUoG  Před 6 měsíci +2

      Otto seems the biggest concern for me too. I mostly think this experience was meant to show the dangers of intentionally forcing change on another's mind. People in fragile states of mind can be impressionable. Something we have to keep in mind.
      But yeah I've seen enough stories in science of things that by today's standards we would consider horrifying.

    I guess it’s a good of time but the timeline of events is just odd in this game. In the first game, they say that the psychonauts were made in the 50s but I’d have to assume that’s a little off considering that one of the patients has a 50s suburbia mind and he has been there for a long time. And I say a little off because this stuff screams 60s or Later. Considering the war, this must be related to linked to the invasion of Czechslovakia although in that case, Grulovia won. So this puts that event in the late 60s early 70s. Which actually makes a lot of sense considering the setting of psychonauts 20 years after. Which puts the game in the 90s. Now why did I say this? I have no idea and I just wanted to put that timeline in after i held off for so long. As for the video, can’t wait for Cassie.

    Question, will you do a video that basically goes into post traumatic stress disorder and how different people deal with it I mean I think the crew has said that was a major theme with the psychic since you’re getting close the villain I think the crew has suggested that he’s got Peter Pan syndrome. I don’t know if that’s a real syndrome I think he represents a combination of narcissism nostalgia victimization and maybe hero complex the first has been made into a video already nostalgia the part of the ride is literally making the country look great because that’s how he remembers it basically a Potemkin facade heck the fact that he says a sign of its countries greatness is that he had a cotton candy maker in his bedroom for victimization. That’s more of the second part where he basically makes a big deal about how his family suffered but it’s showed he was basically living in the hotel of a casino and hero complex the last part is basically him just saying how it’s his destiny to make his home grade again I am the hero of the story that feels like a complex to me if I’m wrong I’m sorry
