    Going again on Starlux in a few weeks to TPE and LOVE it. I never thought I would say a movie screen on an airplane seat could be *too* big, but the Starlux screens are glorious like a mini theater. And bluetooth connection is an awesome bonus.

    This was a VERY enjoyable and informative video review Dan!!! I look forward to seeing more. I'm currently on a 4 month visit to Cebu and had a 3 flight return to San Francisco in mid November scheduled through the Alaska Rewards Program (PAL- MNL,/JAL-HND/JAL-SFO). I always use Alaska Miles. I always keep looking though for something better (hoping Cathay would make a comeback) and suddenly, out of nowhere on August 8th this Starlux option appeared. I'd never heard of them before. I checked them out online, watched videos, booked through Alaska and then cancelled my PAL and JAL reservations. So now I'm Starlux CEB-TPE-LAX and Alaska LAX -SFO.. Starlux just announced an inaugural TPE to SFO flight on December 16. Here are a few notes......I paid 130K miles for my Business Class ticket!!! That was an outrageous cost but I just had to try it. Those same seats are now 350K!!!!!! 235K if your just going to LAX. Premium seats are an equally insane 140K to LAX, This is of course is rom Cebu. The other EXTREMELY irritating Starlux quirk. On all other Alaska Rewards flights I've booked (Cathay, Emirates, JAL, Korean) I was able to access the partner airline directly with their Confirmation number and then pick my seat, choose meals, etc. Starlux BLOCKS access to anyone that books through any other means then Starlux directly. You need to call them and work with their agent. Seats were one thing, but they also have special meals offered a week or so ahead of the flight available only on their site that need to be selected in advance. So I don't know if I'll be able to choose one and I'd have to do it blindly too. .

    Apparently, Starlux is the world's first customer to use Airbus new dimmable windows that are featured on the newer A350s and Airbus said that all the A350s and maybe A330neos (in-production and in-service) will be fitted with them.

    I just got back from Taiwan by Starlux, and actually I was able to adjust the window dimming when crew black out the window. Also comparing to economy class, premium economy receives larger table, for economy you only get tinny table which is way too small and I always had hard time to put the food tray (something happened to all newer aircrafts since airline industry try to keep everything smaller in economy!)

  • @danekim4275
    @danekim4275 Před rokem +6

    Your premium economy experience was honest enough to justify NOT paying twice the cost of economy. But that’s just my personal economics. The only redeeming feature appeared to be the nicer seat (compared to regular economy) even though it took a herculean effort to make the lean back, lol. Very nice video. Your video is more relatable to many of us hard working stiffs. We’ll leave Sam Chui to the upper 5% who have lots of disposable income, lol.

    • @fullvlogdan
      @fullvlogdan  Před rokem +3

      Thanks, I feel the same way. Double the price and maybe 20% a better experience. I rarely spend this much on a flight, normally I use miles (from credit card sign up bonuses) for anything other than economy.

  • @kbhasi
    @kbhasi Před 10 měsíci +2

    (3:17) That reminds me of why I resist having credit cards (those being the hidden costs)
    (9:14) The UI language selection menu being one where the user picks their language's word for 'hello' is interesting. It reminded me of the language selection on older Mac OS versions where those had stuff like 'Use English as the system's default language'.
    (12:59) What?! Oh my. A premium airline with adverts before takeoff doesn't really look premium to me. I'm reminded of Qantas having done a similar thing with their short or mid haul in-flight entertainment, but they did it as just one advert before a video began. I was also reminded of advert-supported Amazon hardware products.
    For the in-flight entertainment hardware, I imagine that Starlux went for a system from Panasonic Avionics similar to what Singapore Airlines have on some of their aircraft, and for the software, hired some great UX designers.
    (13:59) My guess is that that the distributors couldn't yet trust Starlux enough as they were a new airline.

    The seat pitch in premium economy looks MASSIVE !
    I'm looking at how much leg room there is from your knees to the seat in front of you.
    For someone who's a lil over 6 foot like me, would you say it's worth upgrading to premium economy over economy ?
    I've heard Starlux economy class can accommodate 6-footers with no problem, just not sure if it's worth spending extra for the upgrade ?
    Right now prem econ RT fares are $2100-2200 LAX-TPE

    While on the subject of Sam Chui, he got the CEO/pilot K.W. Chang in hot water with local authorities in Taiwan by showing up in the cockpit to take a selfie with him.
    The aviation rules strictly state no one is to be in or near the cockpit at any time before, during, or after a flight.
    Sam even managed to sneak in an interview with Chang in the cockpit with no prior clearance from the airline.
    It remains to be seen whether the gov't let off CEO/pilot K.W. Chang after the incident.
    Good ol' Sam does it again !

    There’s a 328 Katong Laksa in TPE airport? Didn’t realize they franchised out of Singapore. Last time I had it in Sing, felt it was way overrated. Janggut Laksa in Katong is much better for Katong style Laksa. And Sungei Road is better for a non-Katong version.

Im far from being a baller traveler or anything, but I tried premium economy on EVA back in the days, it was overall just OK 🫤 just didnt feel like the price difference was worth it at that time for me.

    Im about to book Starlux from Hanoi to SFO via TPE and now that I know that the crew can/ has locked window dimming I am much less likely to book. I wonder if after the inaugural flight or early flights they decided to let passengers have control of the windows? I have avoided 787s for this reason which is not always easy to do! I flew from SIN to SFO in October on United 787-9 and the crew did dim the windows right after our 8:30a departure time but did not lock them out so that was nice. This is something I absolutely hate about the 787 and I guess now the A350- UUgh. Hey AIRLINES! Listen to us about this! Don't lock the windows!

    Generally speaking, can you use credit cards at the Taipei airport during transit?

    • @fullvlogdan
      @fullvlogdan  Před rokem +2

      Absolutely. I'm not sure where you're from, but most international airports partner with payment providers that can accept payments from any credit card. They want you to be able to spend money there.

    Skip to 9 min in unless you want a long long discussion on his views of the airport. Also, how could the leg rest extend, you had the frigging backpack in the way of your feet. You need to ditch this "I am so important and have to run to important meetings so I only travel with an oversized backpack" It clearly blocked your feet and the leg rest....just check a bag or put it in the overhead bin.

    I don’t know why Contant creators who post videos about a particular airlines product spend so much time filming the airport, the check-in counter, the duty-free shop, and the jetway. Just get on the dang airplane and let us see what we’re in for. And this particular video case, it was nine minutes in before we actually saw the inside of an airplane. That’s kind of ridiculous. But once on board, the video became useful. Please, content creators, know your audience! Seeing what it’s like inside a particular airport is only interesting if you were going to fly out of that particular airport, and even then you probably already know what it’s like.
