  • This is my first time recommending a song for "Al Recommends". A brilliant little song from Johnny Flynn for the brilliant show "Detectorists".

The purity of this tune makes me tear up. Beautiful. This song encapsulates the series beautifully.

A truly wonderful song to a truly wonderful programme, it's strength is in it's subtlety, adults and children could watch it, it is a little bit like how TV used to be, The Detectorists is itself a largely unearthed treasure

We enjoyed the show and the music. The humor and depths of friendship and later my own crush on a certain character. It reminds me of friends and in the past we would go digging or diving for old bottles which is another form of collecting. I still have some of the bottles on shelves right here and I need to dust them off and donate them to a museum because I do not look at them or really have room for them now. There are usually times and phases of collecting and then you decide to move on to something else.

Hi Al amazed when you played this beautiful song on your channel. You are totally right this is one of the greatest TV series of all time. I'm biased as I've been metal detecting on and off for many years although the humour is universal as it condenses life into series of half hour shows. I wish I could have attended the 'ring pulls through the ages' lecture. When Lance said to Andy 'we are time travellers' he summed it up perfectly as when you dig up a coin hundreds of years old your first thought is who held it before you why were they here and what swear words did they use on realizing it was lost. The song of the past waiting for you to find it sums it up perfectly. You must get yourself a detector and give it a go ........Now where's my Minelab.

It's a wonderful show, and the title song just enhances the show's whole ambience - its lyrics mean that it works on both the personal and the detectorists' levels.. You made an interesting comment about the instrumentation there. It reminds me a bit of the instrumentation on the Sorrow/Babylon track(s) by Home Service on their album Alright Jack. Check it out if you haven't already done so.

Along the same lines try Lucie Jones and Seth Lakeman, The Ballad of Midsomer County. I love it and hope you will as well.
Detectorists is a fabulous show and I’ve seen it many, many times.
Jonny Flynn read the script of the first episode and wrote the song for the show.
