Ariana's record Republic: *demonetize*
😀😀😀
Eh, companies usually leave covers alone, since they pull a chunk of the revenue out of them anyways.
@@AlibifortheAfterlife Hence, demonitization. Adam gets no money for this whole video because of his use of that song, even though it was for educational purposes.
He made it sound better than the original.
@@8BitBrody No, I meant the creator of the cover gets a chunk but the original artist gets most of it. Some is more than none. Unless I'm missing something, which is entirely possible since CZcams has gone against their own policy many times in the past. (Sorry for late reply, didn't get a notification for some reason)
copyright laws have become twisted to a point that i can hardly recognize their original purpose. copyright isn’t just protecting the little guys from having their content ripped off and having revenue taken away. hell, this video even inspired me to listen to the original song over on spotify. nobody is going to visit this video instead of the official video. it’s transformative. same with people who play short clips and give credit, it actually helps me DISCOVER new music. it’s really sad. for consumers, for educators, and even for music producers. all for some quick cash.
Everyone said my name was stupid so I changed it. When does it say he was demonetized?
@@ZachariaM Adam after they played the reharmonized song: this video will probably get demonetized
As a society, we've decided that sharing is a form of theft. Go figure.
I guess it’s just CZcams stepping on eggshells because they don’t want to be sued, so the whole system is weighed in favor of the person claiming copyright infringement
The problem is that loosening the restrictions wouldn't make things better for the "little guy", because big companies would have more slack to take even more advantage of them. Demonetizing videos is really the mildest punishment imaginable for doing something like this that would have any effect at all in stopping big companies from ripping off every small-time music-maker around.
I think a good series would be you reharmonizing every pop song ever. You would probably gain a whole new set of fans
yup. subscribed solely because of this
Oof thats a lot of *demonitization*
Fake Name ya but a lot of respect!
@@aldrinjohnbalingit7682 This made me realize, with Adam's arrangement versus Ariana's arrangement, makes me see that this song or any song nowadays could have more feeling with more music theory and larger instrumentation in mind. I wish mainstream music could think like this more in music.
I think this would make more sense if it tried to be an exact reproduction of the original, but with the reharmonization applied. It sounds too different here to know what he's actually talking about. What would pop music reharmonized sound like? This was too different, if the instrumental was kept the same barring the chord changes I'd understand way better.

Most of the time, when I hear jazz by _some_ truly-well-educated and/or well-practiced jazz musicians, it's like they're trying to out-class each other by how far off the _expected_ chord progression they can go before they pull it back to a functional-if-not-well-reasoned resolution. It usually ends up sounding like an effete musical conversation that takes a step too far for the untrained, unexpecting ear to follow. As someone mostly untrained, I end up giving up. It's like a joke that has too many leaps in perception between the setup and the punchline. It just falls flat on your audience. As much as one can say any chord can follow another chord, if you want to appeal to a wider audience, maybe it helps if your audience is already prepared for most of what you're throwing at them. This reharmonization was absolutely masterful, not only for trained and practiced musicians, but even for those who mostly don't appreciate jazz like myself. You've achieved greatness here. And you have wonderful friends. I want to hear more.
The more chords you know, the more courage it takes to not play them.
- Jacob Collier
Music is a language, and if you think how many tens of thousands of words are in the English Language but, you can get by fluently with only 3000, then you have a challenge: how to pick the right words and tone to enhance one's communication. Know them all is fine but the trick is knowing the right ones to get over to your audience what your trying to say. The funny thing is that I don't like this arrangement, as it's just too lush with the strings = too much sugar and not enough spice. The problem for me is the instrumentation and production that drowns the lyrics. It's all down to making the best choices one can, but knowing that your audience will not always like it. Sometimes, less is more. And this arrangement loses the cheekiness and spunkiness of the lyric. But that's just my opinion. Have fun, and practice, practice, practice knowing that sometimes you will fail, but if you learn from those failures, you can only get better.
I really like jazz, although I have basically zero knowledge in music theory. I just follow the sound, and admire that someone is able to do this. But yeah, I came to really like some tunes that have most of my friends go "uugh?", so, there may be some training or familiarization involved. Maybe some things are not so unexpected anymore, and I can appreciate them for what they are, or I don´t get so surprised anymore that it distracts me from listening to the sound, and how I perceive it. I don´t know. Jazz is fun, keep on listening. You´ll like more and more of it. Don´t spoil it all with trying for an intellectual approach.
@@lifeontheledgerlines8394 god this is too true
reharms of pop music usually sound really extra, but this just nails it! adds a bit of spice while maintaining the original songs story and integrity.

lol ten years? Is that even supposed to be such a huge amount of time for being able to do something in life overall? Your statement just shows you giving up before you even try. Look at your time ahead and how you wanna use it rather than focusing on the time that’s already gone. Use that instead as an example of how to better use your time now.
@Marco Evans Needed to hear this. Thank you for the inspiration. Just picking it up after not playing for 3 years. Been diving in hard again.

Ik it’s really late but if you want more lighthearted jazz pop like this I would check out geography by Tom misch
Your jazz training really shows in this- I always think it's interesting that for jazz players/arrangers/composers, the hierarchy of justifications for harmony against melody is almost always function > color > line. Pretty much every harmonic area in this arrangement is either describable as prolongation through functional equivalence or motion from one area to another via the standard circle of 5ths predominant/dominant/tonic cycle. I don't know a lot of classical people working today that think this way, and in the pop world, color is often used in a much more direct way without regard to linear motion or harmonic function. Every time I see jazz-infused arrangements/reharms of pop stuff, it confirms my suspicions that a mix of the late Romantic and Impressionist harmonic languages have been kept alive and expanded upon in the jazz tradition.
Basically, nice work. Love what you've done with the tune!
In the meantime, Neely, thank you for making the video despite the blatant incoming demonetization :)

That's one of the greatest reharms I've ever heard. I'm bawling, and much as I love it, music rarely impacts me in that kind of emotional way.
Even though I barely understood the intricacies of this reharm + analysis, I loved it so much! There's just something magical about having the same melody in a different "light" which is totally subjective and dependant on the creator. Bravo!

Question for your next QnA:
What is your opinion on film music? Is it important to study?
there isn't a thing that is important, there is not even one reaosn for us to be alive! Study what you want! :)
One better: trailer music. Trailer music is the purest and most distilled crystallizations of musical communication. The most successful trailer music acts as a repository of musical buttons to simply push and create a quasi-Pavlovian emotional response, and I would love to see some breakdowns and recontextualising of it

In my opinion as a wannabe young eager Film composer.
Analyzing Film scores are a great way to understand orchestration i.e. you can learn how instruments sound or how are they tuned you can learn how to orchestrate chords which is not as easy as it sounds Film composers like John Williams(My favourite Film Composer) Uses a lot of Modes borrowed chords a lot of Jazz harmony etc
Because he was a jazz pianist that's why you will find some extended chords in his orchestration
I know that doesn't clearly answer your question
But to clearly answer it. It depends on you if you're interested in Jazz big bands or using orchestra in your music maybe you would like to learn about chord relationships maybe you want to know some harmonic devices that are used in Film scores(believe me there's a lot of harmonic devices in film scores and it can really change your playing and how you sound)
If that's the case I would highly recommend you to analyze Film scores
There's really not a lot of reasons to not learn about film scores because a lot of people that are doing it are brilliant I will list you some Film composers to check out
If you don't really
Edit: I almost forgot the famous Ghibli cartoons composer
Joe Hisaishi he uses a lot of Jazz Harmony too
Check out his Piano pieces i.e. The twilight shore you can clearly hear his Extended chords
What I love about him is he is kinda manipulating Jazz harmony and making it sound Japanese sometimes He is a phenomenal composer
Another Edit: Joe Hisaishi pieces are kinda hard to analyze because he is what we call a special case he is like Claude Debussy or Alexander Scriabin he is using something that nobody tried yet he is writing his orchestral pieces with Japanese music theory check out "why myizakay music sound soo good" from the channel Sideways then you will be able to analyze his music better
Thanks for this beautiful story ! It is always hard for me to decide whether your friends are brillant on their own or whether you make them shine. I guess there is a little bit of both. Loved this version !

who would sign it?
Dylan Hussain he shouldn’t have to pay to make these videos though (if that’s what you’re saying), it’s still fair use, so actually a petition or even a lawsuit again CZcams for violating fair use laws would be a better idea
They exist. It's not like there's some international institution dictating what kind of contract you can or can't enter into ....
@@Solo-vh9fm The melody and lyrics are reproduced in their entirety, so I don't think it falls under fair use. Also, because CZcams is a privately owned platform, and not a government entity, CZcams isn't required to follow fair use laws. They can remove anything from their platform that they please. That's not to say that I think Adam shouldn't be compensated for this work.
Brent Lewis Oh I thought we were talking about the channel not just this particular video (since the Single Ladies one got unfairly flagged despite falling into fair use), but in most countries covers are completely legal as long as long as profits (or in CZcams’s case monetisation) are shared. CZcams isn’t (explicitly) required to follow fair use, but when you appeal against copyright flags you’re risking going to court (and thus you could be having to hire lawyers) and also CZcams is that big of a platform and while we’re here so is Spotify and Facebook, that they have responsibilities and they have contracts with creators and artists which refer to copyright and each countries laws that you have to agree before even having accounts/releases. If it’s not illegal what CZcams is doing it certainly should be. Unless it’s for good reason (threatening content or harmful content) I don’t think it’s right a platform to just removing on their platforms.

its a really brilliant video Adam you know its like with something as abstract as harmony i feel like there is a sort of spectrum on how it can be analyzed from like a completely dry mathematical formula to just speaking in vague indecipherable word salad, and i think brilliantly here you found the balance where you give some hints to the emotional quality of what is going on while still giving this practical explanation of how these emotions can be chosen and transmuted. Really exceptional, i felt this video was very true. Also, love the outcome :) thanks again for all the hard work you put into making these
NICE. Man I wish I were this musically fluent...
This was an excellent video! A lot of times while people are learning music theory (especially in the context of chord progressions or harmony), it isn't easily applicable in the sense of adding emotional nuances to a song- it seems more theoretical than meaningful. Adam did a great job explaining and demonstrating the versatility of harmonies in songwriting. Nice!
I love how the way you approach this reharmoning or reinterpretating (In my interpretation of what you doing here) by deconstructed the song, not only at the harmonic or chord level but beyond that. You deconstructed it until the core of this song as well, the message of each lyrics. Such a premium quality content, well done Adam.
