  • Join Charles Vollmer from northeast Kansas as he embarks on a new #farming experiment with rye #covercrops . Currently, Charles manages many acres of corn and soybeans, now he is testing the use of rye cover crops. He has also started using a #crimper to explore new methods for reducing chemical use and improving #soilhealth . At the beginning, Charles dedicated some of his acres to test rolling crimp rye at the dough stage. Some of Charles' goals with this experiment included things like weed suppression, erosion control, and enhancing #soil organic matter.
Later, Charles discusses when he planted the rye, what crops are sprouting, and how well the crimper is working so far. He then goes on to discuss the cost of using the crimper. Charles chooses to compare the cost of the crimper per acre to the cost of traditional herbicides.
As he has been experimenting, Charles has discovered and encountered some challenges. Charles discusses these challenges as well as what he plans to do in the future to overcome them to further the effectiveness of cover crops in soil health
