Kurt really makes my rocket rise 🚀
He has a name! Our Corpsmen and Medics, without them, we infantry would never change our socks and be some weak ass war fighters. Knowing we had them behind us, willing to run into fire when we were unlucky/silly enough to get hit, just to try and save us, damn. Thanks, brothers.
The Crossroads battle was considered by Winters as Easy Company’s finest performance in battle. Everything was conducted perfectly and done so with minimal casualties. The miniseries condenses a few things, but gets the whole story down correctly.
In the actual battle, Winters and his men charged the German positions at the same time with cover fire from two Browning .30caliber machine guns; but because of the adrenaline coursing in his body, Winters arrived a head of everyone.
When confronting the German sentry, Winters originally threw a grenade at the men, but forgot to remove the safety tape that held the spring together, so it didn’t go off. At that point, the German sentry threw a grenade at Winters, but for some reason, this grenade didn’t explode either. Quickly thinking, Winters fired his M1 Garand from the hip and hit him.
After killing the German sentry, Winters unloaded two full clips from his M1 Garand into the Germans taking cover from the incoming MG fire. Too occupied with the incoming fire, being weighed down in heavy clothing, and the poor leadership lead the Germans to retreat as the American paratroopers poured small arms fire down on them while Winters called for British artillery to fire on them. Two entire SS companies were routed at the Crossroads and the later attack that came on the area failed in part to Easy Company’s heroics.
The part the miniseries skips over is the other attack Winters made against the Germans. After they were routed at the Crossroads, Winters brought up another platoon of men to go after the Germans. However, as they approached the ferry crossing, the Germans were able to regroup and fend off the attack. Winters and his men fell back to the crossroads, and as they did so, that’s when the German artillery came down on them and wounded several men. Sgt. Dukeman was the only KIA in the battle from the previous night, killed by a German rifle grenade as he stood out in the open trying to get his men to spread out more. All of the paratroopers wounded by the German artillery would survive.
The Operations Room on CZcams has an excellent video on Easy Company’s battle at the Crossroads.
In an interview which you can see on CZcams, Major Winters describes his charge as running faster than he thought he could, and as an out of body experience that he had never felt before or after.
Peacock was known as a 100% by the book and order officer so him telling the men to wait until the smoke (per Winter's order) stunting the Soldiers instinct to follow Winter's lead is a nice, subtle detail.
I really like Peacock, as I understand it he's a guy that was personally liked by those under him but as an officer rather disliked by those same men, and an not very good at being an officer, but the men Under him managed to pick up the slack
Winters was absolutely one of those hyper-competent officers and totally deserved all the love he got from his men. The battalion Colonel Robert Sink considered him one of the finest officers he ever had the chance to command.
Dude was a unicorn company grade:)
If you look into Winter's family and background, you can see the way he was raised really shone through the man he became.
The first time i watched BoB, i thought Winters was too good to be true and was one of these Marty Sue they were putting in TV shows and movie in the 80s and the 90s.
Then i started to look into it, and found that they _downplayed_ some of his actual heroism. And this is true for some of the other officers and NCO.
Competent and fearless. Integrity to the nth degree
Competent and fearless. Integrity to the nth degree
They gave the NCO's tons of love dudes !
Buck saying he wishes the show gave more love to the NCOs... lol. Keep watching guys...
Exactly. I thought the same thing. Hell, in this very episode Winters says, "The only thing holding together Easy company is the NCO's, Toccoa men."
I really like the episode about the medic - It's rare for a series to have full epdisode revolve around the medic.
Jimmy Fallon is playing Lt. George C Rice. He was nominated for the Medal of Honor after making 8 supply runs for the 101st, the 8th one being made *after* the Germans had surrounded the Americans.
Lt Welsh never notified the patrol probably due to Welsh being drunk, which resulted in Lt. Heyliger being shot. Which is why in the next episode someone says moose is gonna make it and Winter shoots a glaring look at Welsh
Welsh, iirc, did have a drinking problem. It’s one of the reasons why he kept getting promoted to Sgt and then demoted back to Private whilst in the unit. But, the leadership in the 82nd saw his potential and once he recieved his battlefield commission, he was transferred to the 101st.
Also, in case you’re wondering as I was, Welsh was not present for the 82nd’s landing in Sicily. However, there is one Easy Co member that did have combat experience before the D-Day jump.
Do you have the time stamp to this? I've been trying to find it.
@@edm240b9 Lt Welsh, kept going between Sgt and Private? What?
@@twrampage this was during his time as a member of the 82nd Airborne. Everytime he was promoted, he would get into an altercation that would lead him to be bumped back down to Private, usually due to drunkenness. However, the brass kept seeing the potential in him, which is why he kept getting the promotions. Once he recieved his battlefield commission, that was when he was transferred to the 101st.
@@edm240b9 Yeah it was a Lt being bounced between enlisted ranks that confused me. Thanks for the clarification.
I had read somewhere that Winters often led from the front not because he intended to, but because he was the fastest runner in the battalion. Under the push of adrenaline he couldn't pace himself to the rest of the unit.
Later episodes after Winters gets promoted focus on the NCOs being the only fellas holding the unit together during the worst of times … the show highlights the importance of NCOs pretty heavily after Winters moves up to regiment … and the real Winters never took credit himself and always highlighted the NCOs and veteran rifleman …
From what I understand, Fallon's grandfather fought in the Battle of the Bulge, and he asked to appear in the episode as a tribute to him.
I guesstimate this episode was shot at the end of a full day of Beers and Breakdowns. You guys are off the chain.
💯
I remember watching this episode for the first time and being blown away at the efficiency of the small team tactics vs the German's superior numbers!
In this episode when he told Lebgot to drop his ammo and bring all POWs back to the CP alive was such a smart move. The enemy soldiers know when we're out of ammo because they hear the ping That's why he said " You drop one soldier and the rest will jump you" Captain Winters knew a lot of these guys were very emotional and would probably do something stupid.
Leibgott also had a reputation for being extremely aggressive in combat and HATING the Germans so yeah those POWs may not have made it back otherwise.
Here we go, the garand "ping" nonsense again.
Winters knew that Liebgot was one of the "killers" of Easy. Not a bad soldier, but one who tended to let his emotions go to his head and do stupid things like executing POWs.
Winters only loaded one round in the chamber without the clip so there’s no clip to eject and make the “ping” sound.
@@andrewwestman2407 ping or no ping (clip or no clip) sound, the m1 grand bolt goes to the rear when it's out of ammo so it'll be pretty obvious that he's empty
Can relate to hating being cold.
I used to say, like lots of people, that I'd rather be cold than hot "because you can put on more layers but you can't take off anything more after a point". Oh what a fool I was.
When I was in Iraq I was pulling guard duty in the tower. My buddy and I were supposed to be relieved shortly after nightfall, so we didn't bring any snivel gear. The drop in temp at night in the desert has to be experienced to be believed. During the day it was mid 80s. At night it dripped below freezing.
Our relief didn't wake up, and we were there all night, in a guard tower exposed to the wind (which was blowing like hell), standing/sitting on a steel plate that conducted the heat right out of us, in our lightweight DCUs, temp in the high 20s, all night. Nothing around for quite a distance (we were driven out to the outer perimeter), and no commo because our logistics were all messed up and a lot of our equipment wasn't in yet.
If something happened, gunfire would be how we would alert everyone.
We were so cold were stole the toilet paper out of the portajohn, dumped the water bottles out of the cardboard boxes and tore the boxes up, and even broke up the wooden pallets the water bottles were sitting on. We started a fire in an ammo can with all that stuff and still were hypothermic by the time the morning shift came out to get us.
I felt cold for a long time after that no matter what I did.
Takeaway message:
With heat, if you have some shade and enough water, you'll be miserable but fine no matter the temp.
With cold, past a certain low temp, your life is on a timer and when it runs out, you freeze. There are many more reasons why cold is so much worse. (How you have to move to generate heat, which burns more calories and also can make you sweat which makes you lose more water and then the sweat freezes on you when you stop moving making you even colder etc)
So give me any high temperature short of a volcano, any day over cold weather.
Screw. Being. Cold.
When you get to battle of the bulge episodes, you will see the NCO treatment that you’ve been waiting for
One thing that they didn't show was that field was covered in tanglefoot that the British had left. I've had the chance to visit that area and watched two guys make that run from the ditch at the west side up to the road embankment. It took a full minute for them to cover that distance... no weapon, no gear, no helmet. I can only imagine how they did it back in October 1944.
I can’t wait to see your reactions to the Bastogne and Haginaw episodes of this series. And they did such a good job with this series that guys were having flashbacks.
I always wait for the Jimmy spotting in this episode to see their surprise..."It's Jimmy Kimmel!" That was the greatest yet. I died 😂
watch the entire series. the NCOs are recognized - and respected by Winters
Winters was an awesome Officer and a leader. Awesome tactician and better leader. This show is great. You're reactions are always awesome. Thank you for the great content.
This series is amazing from the couple of episodes I watched back in the day. I need to go back and watch it all the way through. Lol
This is a series I probably watch once a year, it's so good
Since “Memorial Day” is coming soon you two Yokels should watch the movie “Memorial Day” which compares the memories of the grandfather in Operation Market Garden to the grandson’s experience in Fallujah.
Funny as hell as always. Episodes need to be much longer 🙏 please
Thanks for the video! I always look forward to the breakdowns.
I feel that Winters was portrayed like this because of the veterans interviews, they all had the nicest and most respectull things to say about him. So the character might be an overall incarnation of the vision that these soldiers had of him, but it can't be too far from what the real guy was really like.
Not a bad observation. Like they say in the breakdown there's always good guys out there. The difference is that this one had a book and series made about what he did. Having read Winters book, I personally feel he was a legend of his own ego.
Good stuff guys, appreciate the stories.
Hanging out watching! Always a good review and something very interesting shared, real war experience toward a show or movie. Something humorous shared that makes the viewer laugh, brings us right in the room. You guys are great! All 3, even with the white headphones, first for me seeing man behind the scenes! Working hard, having fun. See you all next week!
Guys my Sunday evening could not be complete without Beers and Breakdowns! 😂 Always make my day! Cheers from Italy
My older brother and I had both read Ambrose’s book and were so excited to learn it was going to be made into a miniseries. The part in the book when Joe Toye said something like “what’s a guy got to do to get killed around here” made me cry. It really happened and it’s beyond my imagination how they got through it
Thanks guys!
Appreciate your tactical insights.
THANK YOU I have been waiting for this! It was cool to see you analyze exactly why Lt. Winters was looking at his men before the charge, I had never thought about that shot the way you explained it.
Easy Company went from Soebel to Meehan to Winters to Heyliger to Dike and finally Spiers. That is 6 commanding officers in 6 months. Before becoming the Easy CO, Dike had been awarded two bronze stars for Heroism in Holland and Bastogne. They never show that at Foy Dike was seriously wounded in the first few minutes of the assault.
Band of Brothers is a National Treasure in the cinema world. The live interviews with the wonderful Patriots were pure gold. God bless veterans past and present. You guys are awesome. Keep it up!
"if you have a question, ask an officer, they will answer your question. If you want the correct answer to your question, ask your NCO." My Aunt, who was a navy nurse and officer said that to a group of enlisted sailors she was training to be corpsmen during the Korean War.
During Operation Cobra in WW2, bombers accidentally dropped their bombs short killing 111 and injuring almost 500. FF happened a lot in the war
I was watching a stream and sensed it’s about that time of day for a fng b&b 🔥🔥🔥
Only liked and commented because you reminded me at the end of the video lol! I guess now is a good time to thank you guys for your service, I have huge respect for yall! I am non military myself, just always been a war nut.
much love for you guys
Awesome show. And interesting perspectives from you both having experience in combat. Thank you for your service and god bless.🇺🇸
Love you guys. God bless you.
Love your work
@FNGACADEMY Buck we need two videos of you, one tell us about the schools you had the opportunity to attend when you were a Green Beret and second, in your experience, what do you think the future missions of the Green Berets will be because everything is changing,🙃👐
Such a great series! Much love from across the pond us redcoats still love ya 😂
I’m pretty sure I was in Ranger school with Kurt, if he was there in the beginning of 2017.
Tour of Duty...best war TV series EVER!
Good job guys!
Jimmy Fallon couldn't drive stick, so they had to push the jeep into the scene while he acted like he was driving. He couldn't stop laughing at himself, and you can see it on his face in the scene
Love your stories guys.......thank you for your reaction to Danger Close. Would love you to revisit the scene of the Kiwi artillery sometime.....keep 'em coming gentlemen..... my favourite channel
Very entertaining men, keep it up.
This is when Tom Hanks literally takes the reigns in the series...becoming more introspective with Winters. Long before PTSD was even taken seriously. General Patton famously addressed it with the back of his hand on a soldiers face. The back and forth between the typewriter and gunfire is done brilliantly. I appreciate the insight on the assault position, you would think that was a given but you're right, it's not, great story. I say "common sense isn't as common as it used to be." Oh and if any of you come across any bacon sandwiches, let me know. Currahee ♠
Even though I also hate being cold. As a canadian your bit about all the winter gear you like wear is hilarious IMO
loves these
When you think about the METT-T of the fighting in Holland, it's just.....Mind blowing.
Hey boss I can't come in today. Buck and Kurt are doing a beers and breakdown of band of brothers
One of the greatest series of all time. We should never forget the sacrifices these men made for our everyday freedoms we take for granted.
Have y’all seen the movie Sabotage starring Arnold Schwarzenegger? I’d like to see y’all breakdown this movie. Thank y’all for your service to this great country.
Fun stuff.
You gonna do more Reacher?
Or what happened to the Terminal list ;)
Ayyyye, buck, what's your warm up to a run/ruck? Dropping body fat and building cardio to go in. Any advice and whatnot for cardio would be a big help.
Mind you, I'm in my 30's and that urge to serve has only gotten stronger as I get older... so I have a 30yo body is my tldr
You guys are the best. Would love to see you do the Pacific
My grandfather's brother is a Vietnam vet. He only told my grandfather this syory when he was extremely drunk. They had a friendly fire incident where an entire platoon of Marines was wiped out because the guy on sentry duty fell asleep while the platoon was out on patrol, and when they got back the sounds woke him up and he thought it was the enemy
"Paying attention to detail": When Winters says go on *RED* but some just want to follow him out, then 1 guy says "No, wait for the signal"
That's what they're talking about in boot camp!😉
RED would be an epic funny one.
LOL reminds of Swiss Army Winter Training - and yeah....We received one Thick Pullover - A pair of Thick socks - and a Warm Salute of a General! I live in the mountains and i hated the Winter Training - useless - sleeping outside in the mud for weeks - shaving - taking shower in the woods. Next Training i was the "Michelin Man" - so thick i could almost not wear my gear LOL
Appreciate your Channel - always Fun
This show actually did a great job compared to most shows and movies about highlighting the NCO’s. Enjoying the content guys.
Good units have their target prioritization down to SOPs. I was DEFINITELY NOT SF, just regular infantry in Canada. But we had that. When we fanned out and got ready to engage, the place YOU occupied, designated the target YOU fired at... Unless otherwise specified! It works like the arcs of fire in a defensive position, dividing the area into distinct, but overlapping or touching, kill zones.
I thought that it was like that everywhere else...
I'm new to your channel, so I don't know if this fits your content, but on the Fat Electrician channel, he has a great example of an officer leading from the front: Dan Daly, who he calls "the most gangster marine of all time." Thank you for your service and also for creating such original and insightful content!
The bit about pissin in snivel gear had me crying lol
Thank you Bro's for your service BTW .
Kurt never skipped leg day. Props my guy.
Yup!
Bro cold weather gear is the best. I too hate being cold. Growing up in Hesperia the heat was my best friend. Screw being cold.
40 + yrs Heavy construction. As soon as you get dressed for the cold day,,,,, gotta pee. So cold one day. got home , told the wife is was so cold, the boys pulled back in side.. Gotta coinfused look.. Oh, show me.
So the question I've always had with the crossroads attack: Did Winters really mean for there to be -that- much delay from when he popped the smoke until it ignited? Or was it intentional, he knows the fuse is however many seconds, he knows it'll take a second or two for the smoke to really pop, and he wants that much time between his initial exposure and assessment and the rest of the men attacking? And yet one more or: was it just his perspective, his point of view, where those few seconds of the smoke fully igniting slowed down and seemed like entire minutes?
Of course it's played up screen for dramatic effect, but they added the detail of one man getting up and the other saying, "wait for the signal!".
What do you think? I personally think it was intentional but it probably felt like forever to him. I don't know if a WWII era red smoke grenade is a 3.5 second fuse or not, but I can imagine it seemed like five minutes when you crest a hill into an entire enemy company.
You guys are great! LOL
11:39 War Boner was the name of my second album!
BTW Id love to see you guys react to Brothers In Arms Road to Hill 30, its a early 2000's game but the squad based gameplay focuses on being a realistic reenactment, the cool thing about it is that its the closest thing to Band of Brothers in a video game (follows the 502 instead). If you want to see anything on it check out RETRO JANK I just finished a full playthrough of it on the hardest difficulty. I think you would appreciate the way they show how to shoot move and communicate, Colonel John Antal was their adviser through the production and made sure it was as good as they could have made it back in like 2003.
This is the quote I feel describes how the military breaks down "“Out of every one hundred men, ten shouldn't even be there, 80 are just targets, nine are the real fighters, and we are lucky to have them, for they make the battle. Ah, but the one, one is a warrior, and he will bring the others back.” Heraclitus
Any word on when the boots are coming out?
To be fair to BoB, it gives a fair share of love to some NCO like Malarkey, Randleman and of course Lipton.
Random semi-related comment. Last month at my redneck service rifle match, I show up and like half the dudes have bayonets. Apparently April is bayonet month or something. First dude to shoot has an M1 Garand so he puts his bayonet on and takes his shot at the first 100 yard plate. I see it splash at the top of the 300 hundred yard berm. I tell him "you're shooting waaay high up over the berm." I figured he forgot to reset his sights from last time but the old guys there say "oh its probably the bayonet." He takes the bayonet off and just center punches the next plate. Putting a bayonet on his rifle was making it shoot about FOUR FEET high at 100 yards. So that earlier episode when Bull tells the privates they won't hit anything with their bayonet mounted is apparently true.
Keep going, brilliant 😂😂😂😂
Do more of the pacific!!
Best. War. Series. Ever.
As always asking for: Blackhat, Collateral, Miami Vice:) Best wishes to you guys!
Our HR guy at work was an Officer in CAF, and he had a saying "There is different levels of common sense, some people just choose not to use it."
Have you guys seen Southland yet?
Great reaction channel
You should put which episode and season the episodes are from
Absolute truth! about common sense, a saying that I took from my father an Army Sargeant who had 2 tours in Vietnam 66' -68'. " Common Sense Is Not So Common ", a saying that reminds me to always use Common Sense in every situation in life. Great channel enjoy you guys sense of humor and military stories. My dad would have loved your channel, sadly he passed in 2006 of the effects of Agent Orange at 59 years old. ❤🇺🇸🇺🇸👍🍻🍻
I can tell Sean has cut back on the drinking. His face looks his age now, good for him.
Okay... so how many beers did you have BEFORE you started recording?
I didn't expect to get a lesson on how to pee in cold weather, yet here we are...
Review the Long Road Home series
im glad i wasnt the only one who saw jimmy falon when watching this, also the snivel surgery is a real thing XD i couldnt tell you how many times ive had frozen hands in the dark tryna piss in the woods
Could any of you guys explain to me the difference in responsibilities and privileges between the different sergeant types, who they lead and what they need to do to earn the stripes
Who likes being cold?
Im from Norway and even I dont like the cold.
Luckily our military winter training is damn good, so we’re prepared!
Hope you guys got to come here to do some cold winter training during your service
I thought you Norwegians put your children in the snow for their naps.
@@charlesgantz5865 true true, they stop doing that when the kids are old enough to decide where to take a nap by them self
Oh right BOB🎉
You guys gotta finish the pacific
Great work once again keep going and finish the greatest miniseries of all time. Then you can follow it by the best Green Beret movie of all time,

You’re a Green Beret and former cop, and your biggest fear is karaoke.
