- I'm falling short so far on three of the eight reading goals I set for myself in 2023. But I have an ambitious plan for meeting them over the next few months--a plan I didn't have in mind when I set out last January on my reading journey!
My 8 reading goals for 2023:
--a classic I haven't read before
--some poetry (a full collection?)
--a contemporary book in translation
--prize-winning non-fiction
--science fiction
--the book that everybody's talking about this year
--a book published by a small press
--humor
Hello Kathy,
Most appreciated the vignette about your grandfather. I have a vivid memory (I’m in my 70’s) of asking my grandfather about his his gold plated pocket watch - it was given to him on his retirement from the railroad.
I’m no expert on books in translation, however Japanese fiction seems to be prominently displayed in bookstores these days; some no doubt are in translation… another great video!

PS: Currently reading Heather Cox Richardson ‘s Democracy Awakening (in short chapter bites).
I tried Heather Cox Richardson's Substack, but it didn't work for me. I can't even put my finger on why.
Took a great class on Japanese literature way back in college, and some of those stories have reappeared more than once. I may have to go back and reread some of them for a future video...
You will LOVE David Copperfield. It is an easy read, and I am so glad that I read it.
Yes, it’s long, but not a slog. Very engaging.
Thank you for your thoughts. I’m inspired to stop scrolling and start reading again.
Reading it now! Video to come...
I haven’t read Demon Copperhead yet but I read David Copperfield last year and absolutely adored it! I devoured it in about two weeks. It even knocked Great Expectations from my favourite Dickens book spot. David Copperfield has such a charm to it and I hope you enjoy both books when you get to them!
Reading it now! Videos to come...
I am doing the 52 Book Club Challenge. The diversity of the prompts takes me way out of my comfort zone! I have 13 books left to read, but some are daunting, such as "The Secret History" by Donna Tartt.
So cool! Good luck!
