You’re right moisture is key. Not always. Sometimes they are hung in in direct sun. The pups are all grown outdoors. Have seen some growers using a cup ensuring the roots are in contact with the media. Thought it was quite interesting will do a video on that soon.
With the pup that establish the shield frond would have been damaged either way. With cutting it out allows easier access to the pup with the most minimal damage to both plant.
