    I worked in a camera store in the 70s and we sold a lot of Vivitar products including the lenses. They were owned by a company called Ponder and Best who made a lot of other photo accessories (I have a P&B tripod that’s built like a truck). Their Series 1 lenses were suppose to compete with the lenses made by the camera companies.

    I watched this video some months ago and thought: cool, what a nice little lens. Today I watched this video again because I discovered this lens in my lens collection (the same Kiron built version, in pristine condition). I just had forgotten that I purchased it some years ago on ebay. The next day with reasonably good weather I will give it a try.

      how are these so expensive? I got one with misadjusted infinity focus for free 😳
      Maybe I should sell it instead having it collect dust after I repaired it...

    Just grabbed one. I don't have all the options on the wide side that I'd like, and that first flower image was enough to persuade me to get this. And it's great for storytelling purposes to be able to get in close and still show the context. Plus which I bought a Vivitar zoom decades ago with great bokeh like this wide open. Why do people spend like $1,700 dollars on a lens that's painfully sharp wide open and then spend another $700 on a diffusion filter so they can get the much-sought-after "film look"? It's crazy! Anyway, thanks. I'll bet I'm not the only person with several nice budget lenses in his collection that are there because of your excellent taste.

    I've been looking for a good copy for aaaaages... so glad to hear it's as handy as I figured it would be. Merci pour ça! I currently only have the Viv 35/1.9 which looks way more dreamy in the soft parts but isn't quite as multifunctional.

    I have a Panagor 28mm F2.8, pretty close in terms of focal, and it's quite neutral across the aperture range, not the shapest but well good enough for my use, I love it ! I think it's a pretty good travel lens either.
    It might be a bit tight as I use an APS-C camera

    I have an FD Vivitar 24mm f/2.8. I originally wrote it off as soft and put it in a drawer. Perhaps I should revisit it and see what I can get out of it.

    Lucky to find one for $30 on the Bay. It was mislabeled as a 28mm. Of course the aperture blades were stuck open so a little cleaning goes a long way. It is pretty sharp wide open even but the corners are a dreamy soft. Still though not a bad find.

    I've bought mine at a thrift shop, with MD mount, for 6000HUF ( ~€17), I'm in love with the lens, it was a huuge bargain. It is way better, than the f2.8 variants.

    Mathieu, I really like your soft colors that have a cinematic character to them. I bought a Vivitar 24 f2 as well, mine is a MC, RL edition (in blue), with serial # 28401402. Is this similar to yours and do you know what the "RL" means? Thanks, Ron in San Diego.

    • @madmartn

      I don't know the Canon nFD but old Nikkor and Minolta MD 24/2.8 and both are sharper than the Vivitar 24/2.0
      the Vivitar has very soft corners on full frame but with APSC its all good

  • @benfromatlantis
    @benfromatlantis Před 6 měsíci

    Hey, I've got a stupid question:
    How can everything in the frame be that sharp when you have your camera on a fixed point and let it record?
    ie when the sheeps come across the way from back to front. Are you turning the focus point continuously or what?
    I really don't get it.
    The lens shows every object sharp with every movement going from here to there. What is my problem?:)))

    I have owned and used Vivitar 28mm, 35mm, 200mm, 35-85mm, 70-210mm, 90-230mm lenses and 2x tele-converters.
    I have never owned or used the Vivitar 24mm f/2; however, I do own a Nikkor 24mm f/2 lens that I use in a 24/50/135mm lens kit.

    Actually this lens always performs worst in comparison with other 24mm lenses of that time. But maybe the „dreamy“ look at f2-2.8 is sought for video 🤔

  •  Před 2 lety +1

      I got the Series 1 28-90 2.8-3.5 a long time ago and it was the first lens that really struck me with the smoothness of its bokeh. Often lenses that are known to give you that get four-figure prices, but these don't have that rep and go for two figures in the states. Usually one figure is 5 and the other is 0. They're a bit cumbersome but that's a lot of image quality for the money IMHO.

    • @mfreeman313
      @mfreeman313 Před 2 lety

      @@montazownianr1 Sorry to hear that. Bad copy, maybe. I got oil on the aperture blades of my old one and didn't use it for a very long time, but I got it out a while back and liked the bokeh and general look so much I bought another one. For me the main drawback is it's crazy big on a mirrorless camera. Oily aperture blades seem to be a common problem with these old Vivitars.
