Well said Dan, we’ve been seriously let down by Gateshead Council. Gateshead Town centre is a shit hole, they spend nothing on the Town. Closing Gateshead Leisure centre, bowling clubs have had to fold, because they won’t cut the greens. Kids have got nothing to do because of the lack of facilities. Absolute disgrace!
Aldershot fan here, genuinely sorry for this news, you are one of the best sides I saw in the division this season and you deserved to be in the playoffs. Crazy...
I feel for you and all the Gateshead fans. Having been to a few games myself this season I've seen the passion and dedication the people of Gateshead have for this football club. A football club is the heart of the community and its a shame the local council can't see that. Hopefully the decision can be overturned because the people of Gateshead deserve better.
Chesterfield fan here. Absolutely shocking decision, the players staff and fans must be gutted but why did we only find out today ? Even worse Solihull have a bye while Ally above them have to play to prove themselves ! You have to ask questions of those who so-called manager the NL &EFL while those at the sharp end have to suffe the consequences. Sh*te
From a Toon fan so sorry mate. It would have been good for the Northeast to have Gateshead in the football league if they got in by the playoffs. All the best
It's sad to say that is it worth the football club continuing to exist when the goal of promotion to the football league has been taken away by our uncaring council. It's a kick in the teeth for the work done by Gateshead supporters when the club were relegated and saved the club from going out business. If someone wanted to build an alternative stadium I'm sure the council would do their best to thwart their efforts. Hang your heads in shame but if Gateshead win the FA trophy the I'm sure the council members will come out of the woodwork to praise the team.
We’re gutted for you guys. I was rooting for Gateshead to win the playoffs. You were the only team who (I felt) completely outplayed us (Southend) at home this season. How you can’t be in the playoffs and poor teams like Halifax with a goal different of +8(!) are is a massive shame.
I raised this with people earlier this season. I could not see how the council could possibly proceed with ownership given the amount the Tories have underfunded the bloc grants to local authorities. It’s not a case that they don’t care, it’s a case that libertarian ideology runs things in the UK now. I despise the Labour Party but it’s not as simple as ‘blaming the council’. Tory and Labour councils are going bankrupt across the UK because of underfunding year on year from central government. Councils simply don’t have the budget for stadiums. As I said earlier in the season I think they are going to sell the ground and I was trying to raise it with people so we could be prepared. Once again, it was the same with Cala, it was either crickets or dafties in denial saying it was all wrong. We need to get prepared for what is to come with the stadium, the council do not have the money to maintain the stadium because of underfunding from central government. It’s not much deeper than that.
@@jacklamb2904 Again, local councils have been given less and less money from Westminster. This is how the system works Jack. This has happened year on year since Cameron/Osbourne.
Surely having a tenant that pays rent helps to subsidise the running costs of the stadium? Could the council afford to operate and maintain the stadium without the football club's financial input?
Followed you and Gateshead since we signed Langstaff and Scott, was shocked when that news broke. Shame on the council depriving the people of a chance to see league football.
Well said! From a hartlepool fan gut wrenching for you's. EVERYBODY in the country apart from the council, FA and the EFL can see what is happening here. Almost what's the point of trying next season (Gateshead) if you even finish in top spot now you know the outcome. Crazy. I've been going to Hartlepool for over 40 years and hartlepool Borough Council won't sell the ground to the club and that stops the owners from investing in ground upgrades etc, a few ex owners have tried to buy to put conference centres and training facilities etc but who can blame them for holding back? They like Gateshead council are like you say quick to jump on the apron strings of success though when it comes along. Up the Heed and all the best
Damn that’s sad, you’ve had such a great season, with Wembley and reaching playoffs, and the council ruin it for all, I’m a Halifax Fan and we’ve had a similar situation with our council, they couldn’t give a shit about us, they don’t look after our stadium, has left our pitch unplayable for the football team, (hence why are last three games were played at Accrington and Chesterfield’s grounds), and don’t acknowledge the importance of FC Halifax Town or The Shay itself as a huge asset, to the local community, I’m hoping something is done about it, I’m wishing you all the best for the future, hopefully one day soon, Gateshead will rebuild from this terrible situation, and come back stronger than ever before.
So I mentioned this whole this in an online discussion group and some came at me saying the council can't give them the lease because they already put enough money into the club, that they play the players and coaching staff wages. They claimed the club wouldn't even be where they are if not for the council money and a lot of the fanbase knows this. Is there any truth to this or are they BSing me? They couldn't provide any links to back this up and I can't find anything myself. Their argument seemed to just boil down to, it would cost a lot of taxpayers money.
Toon fan , was gutted to hear this , an absolute disgrace, would’ve been fantastic for the chance to see another north east club in the efl, hope it gets sorted out and you have an even better season next year, ho’way the Heed .
Totally agree the council has totally shafted Gateshead FC, the club knew the date to show ground Tenture had to be in by March 1st, and by not sorting this out they have as per a lot of councils shown know real concern for there clubs in there borough. Feel gutted for the players, manager and staff,
Realy sorry to here the news of your council stich up stopping you going into the playoffs. Enjoyed watching you this season, hope something sorts out in your clubs favour. John , life long Shots supporter
The EFL are introducing the 10 year tenure rule from the beginning of the 2025/26 season which means had you won promotion you still had a year to negotiate a new lease. Some might say that would be cutting it fine but Newport County are currently playing at Rodney Parade and their lease expires in July of this year. Last summer they only extended their lease by one year. As far as I can see there's no difference between Newport's situation and Gateshead's. If you did join the EFL you might be at risk of expulsion if you didn't secure the lease by next summer but at least you'd be better off financially to either a) pay the council more for the lease or b) secure a lease at a different ground. As a Tranmere supporter whose club sits in the shadows most of the time I wish you well. As a football supporter who despises any decision that impacts on sporting merit, from the Champions League format to grassroots politics I also wish you well. Good luck in any appeal, the more Northern clubs in the EFL the better as far as I'm concerned too. PS, you may have to do a Barnet and try and find your own ground again. PPS could the people in the council who made this decision have their own agenda; are they Newcastle fans?
Feel for you Dan and all your fellow Gateshead fans. All the hard work you guys have done to qualify for the play offs, playing excellent football, overcoming a player exodus and then been shafted by your local council. The only thing I can think is that they don't want you on a lengthy lease because they have plans for the land. Probably housing or student flats. Keep fighting folks. It took us at York over 20 years to get a community stadium and even now politics are rife. No local authority is interested in football, they are only interested in making money and filling their own pockets. Good luck, I am sure I speak for a lot of fans in the National League wishing you all the best.
Gateshead's football team abandoned, Dunston pool survived by swim England's contract money. Birtley baths closed, St Mary's given to a trust, Dunston bowling club given to another trust, 3 goalposts on the Dunston pitches, Leisure centre closed, High Street is 95%+ closed. Dreadful decision by Gateshead Council and so short sited. Being in the EFL can have a beneficial effect on the locality and that is being lost. As a Wrexham fan I am so sorry for the club and its fans.
What the EFL could have done was give Gateshead special dispensation, in that they could take part in the Play Offs, and should they have got promoted, the EFL give them till the end of next season to sort the security of tenure issue out, or be forcibly relegated next year...
